San Miguel is a typical Mexican neighborhood full of small stores, artisan workshops and a mixture of colonial and modern houses. It's very friendly and close to the center of town.
Walking is the best way to get around and sightsee. There's also a public bus one block away that gets you to most parts of town. Taxis are abundant and very economical--about $2.20 a ride.

My friend and I had an enjoyable week in San Miguel at La Cocina Cooking School. The neighborhood is super quiet. Several good restaurants are close by. Instituo Allende is about 10-15 minutes away. Our room had all the basics, including an en suite bath with hot water, plenty of blankets, and reliable wifi. Kris was super easy to communicate with before and during our trip. While we mostly communicated via email, we also had some nice chats at La Cocina. Overall, a nice experience.
This place is quite beautiful. The architecture is pleasing on the eye, and the rooms are cozy. The hosts, Kris and Alberto are kind, proper, and welcoming. If you would like to sleep in a nice place and enjoy amazing food, look no further, this is it! (:
I will definitely go back to La Cocina in the near future.
A wonderful place to stay in San Miguel! Clean, cozy, and beautifully decorated, it felt like I was coming home every day. The café attached in the front serves excellent food at very reasonable prices. Lovely bathroom with excellent water pressure and lots of hot water. Kris also was a great host and generous with her time and her expert insights into getting the most out of San Miguel.
Un excelente lugar con una excelente atencion. Altamente recomendable! Me volvería a hospedar ahi sin mayor problema.
We had a wonderful stay at La Cocina. We had a party of three people and none of us had been to San Miguel de Allende before. The rooms were wonderfully kept and Kris was very friendly and knowledgeable about San Miguel. We loved staying in the Colonial San Antonio area because it gave us a chance to see other areas of San Miguel we might not have seen. We felt very safe and loved looking at the buildings as we walked to the jardin. It was great to have El Buen Cafe right downstairs-- nice for a delicious breakfast. We look forward to coming back and would definitely stay at La Cocina again.
Kris and Alberto were wonderful hosts. And their cafe was a life saver I got sick (because I was volunteering in a kindergarten) and Kris came up and offered me soup and emergenc :) So sweet.
We stayed three days at Kris' house in the Queen Room. It was absolutely beautiful! The room has plenty of light, if you open the windows you will feel the wind and birds singing. It was very spacious, with a private patio, magazines, a very traditional bathroom. Kris is an amazing hostess, she is very charming, kind and warm. We felt absolutely welcomed. I will recommend this place hands down even if it's a little too far from everything, you can take a cab which is very cheap and it's worth it. Staying at La Cocina you will experience the real San Miguel! :)
