About This Listing
"All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night air... Not, too stuffy please. I want to sleep well and be comfortable when I wake. I want to walk to cool spots and park my car without a hassle." Congratulations! You found us!
If you have to visit Cleveland regularly for business and wish you could just store your belongings in one place -- a comfortable place to land each time you return, or if you'd like to have a "pied a terre" closer to your work, this room can provide a comfortable alternative to hotel life. It can also be a great spot for a graduation weekend, a wedding or just visiting the land of Cleve.
I live here with three 30-40 something roommates -- a chemist for a local brewery, a doctoral candidate and my son, a musician and music club manager. They're quiet and friendly. So am I. My politics are on the left, and I prefer classical and jazz music, but more often than not, just the sounds of the great outdoors.
I smoke, so you can, too. Just please don't burn anything. We share the kitchen and downstairs living space.
We also now share the house with a 3 year old mixed breed 25lb pooch who is daintily learning her manners. She's house-broken and learning to not jump up to greet visitors.
The room, furnished with a futon, personal storage, closet, dresser, small television. Linens and towels are provided. Windows on the south and east sides offer natural light with a large silver maple shading the south windows. That's why it's a tree house; the room is enveloped in the midstory of huge trees. The shared bath includes a luxurious deep bathtub with shower.
There's a front porch and a lovely backyard with a picnic table and grape arbor. The living room has a working fireplace which is very nice in the winter. This unique arts and crafts house, with all the cool old features like pocket doors and built-ins, is lovingly restored, but not stuffy.
Cleveland Heights' best grocer is a few steps away and the house is an easy walk to the Cedar Lee and Coventry business districts. Best coffee, great restaurants, Cain Park summer concert and theater, galleries and best movie theater in Cleveland are nearby. It is a quick roll down the hill by car or bike or a 45 minute walk to the center of University Circle.
Access to all appliances including the laundry. Cable wifi. There's no AC - just shade and fans, no landline. It's old school comfortable. Restful.
Bedroom, bath, living room, kitchen, laundry, yard.
Interaction with Guests
I am a Clevelander and happy to suggest spots you may not have discovered via tripadvisor. I'm almost always here, give good directions and (season dependent) can share the fruit of my labor in the garden - growing food not lawns in this historic district.
You can see the hidden Cleveland - the one you've never heard about. Borrow a bike and take a ride. See the sunset over Lake Erie as Rockefeller did from his porch at Forest Hill or wind your way to Whiskey Island and see the setting sun burn into the western shoreline while the cityscape stands yards away at your back just on the other side of the mighty Cuyahoga. I've been hosting visitors for 30 years. I love it. Cleveland always surprises pleasantly.
Guests will enjoy all the amenities of the historic district: Grant Deming Forest Hill Neighborhood.
Four doors down - Katz Diner and Speakeasy, longtime family owned local grocer steps away. Thai restaurant and Brew Pub a couple blocks away, myriad restaurants, coffee shops, movie theater and library in the nearby business district.
The 32 busline and the 40 busline take you to the transit's red line (heavy rail). Like many industrial cities, public transit was undermined in the midcentury to make way for cars. We do have it, if you're patient and depending on where you need to go.
Other Things to Note
The city does not allow parking on the street between 3 and 6 am. I will arrange parking for you, if you have a car. On street parking is on the south side of the street (that's across the street from the house). On arrival, please pull into the drive to unload belongings if you have heavy or cumbersome things.
It would be helpful to know in advance if you might require refrigerator space, i.e. you're traveling with a cooler and wish to park some items in the fridge. Yes, you may use the kitchen.
Laundry is also available in case you've just come from the woods and need to freshen up your duds.
Breakfast might include coffee (I make it really strong), tea (usually Earl Grey on hand), toast with butter, peanut butter, jam, maybe steelcut oatmeal. I can also do eggs or you're welcome to make them just as you prefer them. Please let me know if you take milk in your coffee or would like herbal tea or something else. The grocer is steps away, and if I know, I can be prepared. Thanks.
Susan was a great host. The room was lovely and her dog is ADORABLE. I grew up in one of the newer, tackier suburbs of Cleveland and always wanted to live in one of those huge rambling old houses on a leafy street in the Heights, and Susan's place is EXACTLY that. The fact that it's walking distance to ANYTHING is a rarity for Cleveland, but it's close to a great indie movie theater and a bunch of restaurants and a 24 hour CVS. And it's well served by public transportation.
Susan greeted me, introduced me to housemates and shared helpful information despite having to leave town for a family emergency. The room was comfortable and had good ventilation--I slept well. Susan also suggested a local restaurant that I visited and enjoyed. I had arrived after a busy day and a long drive, so it was good to get settled and eat at a nice place.
The space was perfect for my needs. the bed was comfortable, the neighborhood is safe, and is walking distance to many good restaurants. Susan is friendly, and communication was great before, during and after. Check in was a breeze. There is a friendly dog on premises as well. I highly recommend staying here, if you travels take you to Cleveland.
We had a lovely albeit short stay at Susan's home in Cleveland Heights. This quiet neighborhood is easy to locate and is lined with beautiful historic homes and shady trees. There is a very nice garden, front porch, breakfast nook and many more charming nooks and crannies to be found at this abode. Susan and her housemates were all very kind and welcoming and we enjoyed wonderful conversation over morning coffee about a range of fascinating topics. She is a very curious and engaging host! Susan's home is a gem--our room was spacious and clean. We would gladly return on our next visit to Cleveland. We would recommend a stay at 1917 Treehouse for anyone who is interested in learning more about this city or who are just looking for a hospitable place to stay.
I was incredibly fortunate to find Susan for the first month of my time in Cleveland; knows the city as if it were her family member. Her home is unique and beautiful and the futon was adequate for a young traveller like myself.

About the Host, Susan
I am retired from the arts world (modern dance) and enjoy gardening and activism. Mostly I enjoy continuing to learn, my son and my friends.
I'm not a big traveler. I like my "Howard's End" here in the Heights of the rustbelt. It has a rich history. I love hosting folks and learning from guests.
I'm engaged in my neighborhood, an historic district, but with a "city repair" bent; sharing assets, skills, time, gardens. I'm fascinated by permaculture, and I'm forever working on how to make this little plot a food forest. I garden on my yard, my neighbor's yard and at a vacant house across the street. I'm learning.
I've been known to circulate initiative and referendum petitions, fight city hall and just say "no thanks" to bad ideas that arise in our culture locally and globally. I study monetary policy and theory when I'm not gardening or organizing with neighbors and friends.
I enjoy British drama and the classics and documentaries.
I appreciate history, coffee, beer, dogs (cats, too) and the natural world. I'm shrinking my carbon foot print as best I can in this old family home. I chose it in 1989 and still choose it today.
