This single family contemporary home offers drama and practicality. The richly clad core of the home organizes the stairs and bathrooms in a vertical spine that takes its form from the inset at the entry door. The drama of the double-height atrium at the center of the house is crossed only by a bridge connecting the two bedrooms. Light from the north facing clerestory windows floods the first floor below. This Ocean Avenue home was designed by Burton Peek Edwards from the award winning firm of Siegel & Strain of Emeryville

Sean is the perfect host - friendly, inviting, attentive, generous, respectful and funny! He goes above and beyond what is expected in order to provide his guests a comfortable and enjoyable stay, he literally thinks of everything... and he cooks breakfast! :) The room was exactly as advertised: spacious, modern, clean, sunny and private. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit (1 week) and felt completely "at home" the entire time. I don't think I could have found a better place for my visit and I will definitely stay again the next time I am in the bay area (fingers crossed it will be available). Thank you Sean for making my visit super easy and comfortable, you are the best!
Six star experience.
Sean is fantastic host and is going above and beyond to provide a first class experience. He is listening to his guest very attentively and is constantly searching to improve the service he's offering.
He really make you feel at home. The house is fantastic, the room is great and the two dogs are friendly and there are so many extras little things that makes the experience a great one.
I highly recommend him and will come back here.
My experience with Sean and his two boxers was the cherry on top for my trip to the East Bay.
I have stayed for about two months at the room in Sean's house. The Private room and bath were clean, tidy, and spacious. They were as shown in the pictures if not even better. During my stay, Sean was very attentive to my needs and at the same time respected my privacy and space. I'm very grateful to Sean's hospitality and generosity.
If I'm ever back to the East Bay, I will be certainly booking the room again.
Couple of reasons to stay with Sean:
1. Great host - Sean is a very friendly and helpful host. He was super flexible with the arrangements and had the room all cleaned up ready to go with loads of fresh towels, clean crisp sheets and even some refreshements in the room.
2. Good location - there is a bus stop just round the corner that will bring you to Oakland City Center BART. Ashby BART is just a short stroll away. There is also a great cafe and burger place just across the street. McDonalds is also just down the street.
3. The room - The room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable with crisp clean sheets. The room has great natural sunlight. The attached bathroom was spotless with loads of clean towels.
4. Heated flooring - its awesome waking up to heated floors. Anyone that has gone through harsh winters will know what I'm saying.
5. The dogs - Sean's dogs are the greatest companions after a long day. Its always a joy to come home to them.
Do yourself a favour - don't check in into a souless, corporate owned hotel and do stay with Sean.
Wow! I cannot say enough how perfect my stay as been at Sean's place. The room is just right. Spacious, sunny, clean with a newly tiled bathroom. Location worked out great for my work in Emeryville, and just 15-20 minutes to downtown San Francisco. Nice, quiet street with lots of landscaping and quaint shops around.
Sean is the perfect host. Takes care of you better than any hotel. Clean linens, towels, toiletries, and food for breakfast! Sean really wants your stay to be as pleasant as possible. Very kind and considerate host with great conversations. I travel a lot, and sometimes I have problems acclimating to new places, but Sean makes you feel at home quickly. Definitely will return whenever I get a chance. Thank you very much Sean!
Sean is a great host with a great house. He has two friendly dogs who loves a good rob. Sean is considerate and helpful and I highly recommend Sean as a host.
Sean's place is great. Super clean and comfortable. Sean is even greater! He made me feel right at home and made my stay as convenient as possible. His boxer dog Bruno is the best and you can never be bored with him around!
Location is convenient too. About a mile from the closest BART station and you can take a bus there if you don't feel like walking. Also, plenty of zipcar locations in the area if don't have a car.
Will definitely re-book next time I'm in the area!
Sean is a terrific host - friendly, funny and very helpful and willing to go out of his way to give rides, etc. The house is as great as it looks -- further enhanced by Sean's artistic bent and frequent visits to the San Pablo flea market -- and experience I highly recommend! Bruno and Duke are extremely well-behaved, good for entertainment and for cuddles.
The room itself is really lovely; it gets lots of light and with cream walls and steel blue bathroom tiles does feel like a seaside light/colour combo. A funky table is good for working; an equally funky armchair good for not working ;).
The only downside is location - and only true if you are opting for a car-free vacation. The BART station is about a 15-20 min walk, and trains run not so often on weekends. So, getting into SF can take a bit of time.
Get Sean to tell you where to find the interesting pockets of Emeryville, Oakland and other surrounding cities. Being a wanderer, I got royally lost for part of an evening and apparently missed the best sights by just a block or two.
One thing I really liked is that Sean clearly also goes out of his way to be a good neighbour and is friendly to the people who work in businesses around his place.
I stayed at Sean´s House for five weeks alltogether. For me it was just what I have been searching for - Sean is really great, helpful, respectful and kind and made my stay to a perfect one. The room is very clean, stylish and quiet and just what I needed for relaxing after my English courses in San Francisco. The access to San Francisco with BART is very good and reachable within a short time. After five weeks in San Francisco I feel also having a new friend with Sean! I can highly recommend staying in his house and I would definetely return at my next stay in San Francisco.
Mission accomplished. This was my first AirBnB stay so there was a bit of trepidation. That feeling is now completely gone and today I find AirBnB is so efficient, flexible, and affordable that I plan to use it on all my future big city vacations. With regards to my first stay it was just as Sean (i.e., host) described it and just what I needed for my month long stay. The house and room are spacious, private, and well kept by Sean. I am actually envious of the house's style and layout, definitely very modern. I can easily recommend Sean's place to others like me traveling alone, looking for a long term (>3 weeks) place to stay, and needing easy access to the city and surrounding areas. This was a great experience overall and kudos to Sean whom I consider a friend after basically handing out with him for a month. Thanks Sean!
