The accommodation consists of 3 bedrooms (1 double bed +4 single beds), large private sitting room and bathroom. No kitchen as there is a dining room downstairs and breakfast is included in nightly rate. We also have a lounge and roof garden for shared use by all our guests. We are 10 minutes walk from the centre of Luxor and Luxor Temple
I am from Ireland and have been hosting guests at Mara House since 2005. I came to Luxor as a tourist originally and this gives me a great insight into how best help you experience the holiday of your dreams. We run tours almost every day to Abydos/Dendera and the West Bank (Valley of the Kings etc.). My guide will not take you shopping and there are no hidden extras in the prices we quote you for anything. We take no commission from restaurants, shops, taxis or calesh for recommending them to you.
Luxor is currently going through a crisis in the sense that we have had little business in 3 years, also things in Luxor are not the same as pre-revolution. My best advice to you is to make sure you plan your holiday in as much detail as possible, know the reputation of those you deal with - this means you will not be at the mercy of touts etc. on arrival, - the hassle can be intense to newcomers if you have not done your planning well.
Our online reviews are testament to the fact that our guests experience little of the hassle in Luxor when they go about with the taxi drivers, calesh and guides we work with. Please feel free to contact me.
This a great place to stay in a central location. It's easy to get to all of the interesting spots by walking or an inexpensive taxi ride. Everything you need is found within blocks from restaurants to groceries to laundry and a pharmacy.
The apartment is clean, neat, comfortable and safe. The air conditioning is perfect after a long day of seeing the sights. The small kitchen is great for breakfast and there's an outdoor market a block away with fresh fruit and baked goods. There's even a terrific bakery and ice cream place right around the corner.
Mara, the host, is exceptional. She walked us through the neighborhood and introduced us to the merchants showing us where to go. She helped us with selecting tours and arranging a guide. She showed us the ins and outs of Cairo and made it easy to navigate this big and fascinating city.
This was not our first time to Cairo. We had been there a number of times before, but I can definitely say that by far this was our favorite trip. We could not of asked for anything more. The location of Mara's flat was perfect. We wanted to be in downtown Cairo right in the middle of all the excitement and the hustle and bustle and that is exactly what we got. The location of the flat gives you easy access to Tahrir Square all the shops around the square. The train station is only about 5 minutes away, of course that is if the traffic is good. The flat was perfect for our needs. Mara, was out of the country when we arrived and she made proper arrangements to make sure we were properly greeted and provided with all the information for the flat and for markets near the flat. We were well taking care of and had all the assistance we needed while we were there. Though she was out of the country she was always accessible via (website hidden) which was very nice. We had a great stay on this trip and Mara was a great host providing information about the area as we needed it. Mara, Thanks again for your assistance while we were there! Hope to be returning soon!!
Fantastic location in downtown Cairo. Don't be put off by the entrance to the building which is in keeping with the faded grandeur of the neighbourhood. Once inside the flat is lovely - nice decor and comfortable beds. Good aircon which is essential in Cairo.
Mara was a perfect host. She even left a stock of essentials in the fridge. So knowledgable and generous with her time. Since we first made the booking she was in email contact and offered lots of advice on Cairo and Egypt and gave detailed replies to all our questions. Even though she was away in Ireland when we were in Cairo she had her Egyptian phone switched on 24 hours and responded to emails very quickly. Once there was a problem with the electricity - we called her and she got it sorted straight away.
She also has a wonderful guesthouse and restaurant - Mara house - in Luxor. Absolutely the only place to stay for the independent traveller.
I rented Maras apt. in Downtown Cairo in the beginning of March 2012 and had a wonderful week in Cairo. The appartment is big, nicely decorated, exactly according to the photos and it contains all basic needs to make tea, coffee, toasts and proper cooking.
There is a good atmosphere in the appartement and it is absolutly situated in the downtown area, in walking distance form the The Egyptian Musseum and a lot of shopping oppotunities, but it also include traffic noise 24 hours, so I was happy that I brought some earplugs.
Mara was very kind and helpful. She arranged a transfer for us from the airport to the appartement and as we arrived in the evening I was very pleased to find that Mara had supplied tea, coffee and even filled the fridge with food for our morning meal.
I can fully recomend Maras Apt. in Downtown Cairo.
