The apartment has two separate bedrooms, ideal for friends travelling together. Travelling solo? Feel welcomed and secure, no surcharge. Those expecting 5 star facilities at this budget price please note **no pool**no TV**no airconditioning**(radiators in rooms in winter, fans in summer). GREAT base for exploring as Velez is near everything.

The space
Casa Excéntrico is a traditionally built and, as the name suggests, somewhat eccentric, house in the small busy Spanish town of Velez de Benaudalla, very popular with writers, artists, hikers and cyclists. It is also 15 minutes by car from the spectacular Costa Tropical, 45 minutes from lovely Granada city and the Alhambra Palace. ALSA runs an airconditioned coach service up to 8 times a day between Motril and Granada for those without a car. In winter it is close enough to the Sierra Nevada for a day's skiing. All the best of Granada province on your doorstep . . .

The entire upstairs level of the house is for guest use, sharing only the entrance hall and atrium with the owner’s downstairs apartment. There are two completely separate bedrooms. Solo guests or couples choose between the front, double, room with windows onto the street, or the atrium-facing twin bedroom, the beds which can be made up with shared linen, plus request this option when booking.
The second bedroom is also listed separately as "Recharge your creative batteries", at a lower price for guests who prefer a room to an entire apartment.

The apartment is self-catering and has a fridge, microwave, 2 plate electric hob, and all the necessary extras - kettle, toaster, cutlery, crockery, etc. Tea, coffee, milk, sugar, bottled water and condiments are stocked for your arrival. Placid pets are welcome, although the owner does have a friendly dog. In need the terrace and atrium can be separated completely.

The pricing realistically reflects the lack of certain 5 star facilities. It is a comfortable base for exploration rather than a destination in itself - the Excéntrico started life as a family-owned goat farm a century ago but the town has long since closed around it. The plumbing is modern, the hot water excellent and plentiful. However, although there is good wifi, there is no television, no pool, and, thanks to those thick traditional walls, one manages without air-conditioning. Fans and heaters are in the rooms depending on the season. The house is not suitable for children under the age of reason.

The first bedroom is off the upstairs landing, the second is through the living area . Each has own shower, basin and toilet, and the second has a little extra study or dressing room of its own. The entire apartment is fully furnished and ready for your arrival. Downstairs there are general use areas such as the atrium, terrace, a sun-trap patio outside the former goat shed, and a separate laundry (once the smokehouse).

Velez is 5 minutes from the A44 and national motorways, which means it is conveniently near everything. It is not touristy, although many have holiday homes here, as it is such a nice town. The Jardin Nazari, a beautifully recreated nod to the town's Moorish origins, is 5 minutes walk from the house. Nearly everything is - the gym, municipal swimming pools in August, high street banks, shops, and restaurants, and that coach service between Motril and Granada for non-drivers, with stops in the high street. If you want to visit the Alhambra Palace in Granada it is recommended you book ahead, even at quieter times of year. The Costa Tropical's winter is crisp and invigorating, and the hikers and cyclists love it. The pavement cafes are wonderful - not to mention two bakeries in easy walking distance. The bread van stops outside our door Monday through Saturday around 11 am.

With 320 days of sunshine a year winter days are usually sunny but the nights can get nippy, there are radiators in the rooms and extra covers provided. Summer finds fans in each room, and the old walls are so thick the house is generally cool.

Where you’ll be

Vélez de Benaudalla, Andalucía, Spain

Velez was built in Moorish times and has narrow twisting streets surrounded by open farms. It shares the gentle coastal climate of the Costa Tropical, and the Jardin Nazari is a beautifully restored step back into the past. Velez is a small and bustling town with crammed corner shops, mini supermarkets, bakeries and delis, 3 banks, a daily fresh fish / meat market on weekdays, plus the bread van stops at the house every morning around 10.30. Drinks at the pavement cafes have friendly prices and include the day's special tapas as standard. Menus are varied and the food is good - with so much on offer in easy walking distance, guests rarely eat in.

I'm English-speaking, with a smattering of about 5 other languages (Spanish fluency is a work in progress) and in a way I'm standing in for that handy aunt you don't have in Spain - the one in a nice non-touristy town with excellent pavement cafes, and some of the most beautiful bits of Spain just a little further afield. My guest room is your base for exploring and if you're a writer, or travelling alone, or both, you are doubly welcome.

I'm a writer, most recently from Scotland but originally from South Africa, so Velez is my return to the sun, and more. I'm also still trying to bring this unique old townhouse to its full potential, and although the refurbishment has been completed the fine-tuning will continue for many years.

Oh, and I'm the best kind of relative - around when you'd like directions, advice, or to talk about the adventures of the day but otherwise getting on with my own stuff.
