The Space

This is a garden level funky artist’s studio apartment in a historic house with owners living upstairs. You’ll rest on a queen size bed and have access to a small private bathroom with shower (no tub) and separate room for toilet. An air mattress is available for a third person. There is also a sitting and dining area and a limited kitchen with refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave, and French coffee press. We’ll provide a light breakfast with coffee and tea included. Outside your private entrance is a deck and garden area with comfortable seating for relaxing or dining outdoors or browsing the web on our free Wi-Fi.

We are close to Lake Merritt and its running and walking paths and bird sanctuary. We are also nearby the hip and trendy local Oakland Art Scene with many restaurants and coffee shops. Architectural masterpiece, Cathedral of the Light, is a 5 block walk from our home and worth visiting. Just 2 blocks away is a Whole Foods Superstore with build-your-own burrito and brick-oven pizzas. There's also an ice cream bar, coffee bar and a diverse selection of prepared entrees, soups and snacks for carry-out.

We are blocks away from Highway 580, easily connecting you with all major highways for exploring the Bay Area and Northern California. Parking can sometimes be limiting on our street but not impossible. We are close to buses and BART, taking you into San Francisco or the surrounding areas. We offer complementary pickup and drop-off to BART upon arrival and departure, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. with 24-hour notice.

This is a smoke-free rental, indoors and out. Custom massage available on site by request.

We have a small dog, a 11-year-old friendly cockapoo named Boswell, whose breed's coat is allergy free. He will not be in your studio but upstairs and around the property at times.

Check In
  • The studio was in a great location: close to Lake Merritt, which is a great place to walk, and convenient to the freeway for getting to San Francisco and Berkeley. The neighborhood felt safe. Nancy was friendly and checked in with us occasionally and was accommodating when I made a mistake with the check out date. The place was very clean and had interesting art work. The bathroom and shower was a bit squished but manageable. Parking was generally good but we had to park a few blocks away when we came back late one night.

  • Dealing with Nancy was very easy and she was extremely accommodating when it came to our arrival time.

The studio was spotlessly clean and very charming. We especially appreciated the patio and the fully equipped kitchen. We would definitely stay again!

  • Nancy's place was a great place to stay in Oakland. She and her husband were extremely welcoming and helpful, not to mention interesting to talk with. There is everything you need in the apartment, and it feels like home. I recommend this place!

  • Nancy's studio might just be the greatest vacation home. It really has everything you need-- wifi, a desk to work on, a toilet and shower separate from each other (convenient when you have two people), and a simplified kitchen with a french press coffee pot. The bed is nothing fancy, but I had a few of the best nights of sleep in it due to its comfort and how dark and cozy the room gets. The patio is fantastic as well, as you can see from the pictures. I can hardly think of a better patio to drink morning coffee on. Thanks for a great stay, Nancy, you were great.

  • What a lovely space! And a delightful host. She responded quickly to my request for lodging and answered any questions I had. And Nancy was flexible when I needed to delay my check in time. The space was true to its description. With a private entrance it was easy to come in late without disturbing her.
Because I was with a friend from Havana, we were out early and back late to take advantage of sites in the Bay Area. So we were unable to take advantage of the patio area, but it was lovely. I would definitely stay with Nancy again.

  • Nancy's lovely studio was the perfect cosy getaway for our short stay in Oakland. The lovely art fixtures and boho-chic styling made the place both a visual treat and a comfortable home away from home. Nancy herself is a delightful and truly accommodating host, offering yummy foods for our breakfast (which we ate delightfully on her gorgeous porch), light and fun conversation and providing everything we needed for out trip. Loved it!

  • Nancy's basement flat is gorgeous - a cosy and comfortable retreat, with warm floorboards and delightful bits and pieces of artwork and treasures from around the world.. We wanted to take the whole basement flat home with us to live in.

Outside the flat is a sunny, leafy green private wooden deck, and it's just a couple of minutes walk to Wholefoods, bus route options, or a comfortable walk in to the city or to Barr stations.

Nancy was an excellent host - really helpful, warm and very interesting to talk to. We had a lot of fun and can't wait to visit again.
