beautiful little house on 5000 square meters of land with a private garden and creek in a beautiful valley between 2 volcanos, great for nature walks and close proximity to tenorio national park and rio celeste hot springs. ideal climate!

The space

a small but beautiful and clean house on a 5000 square meters in a super safe quiet and beautiful small town in the mountains, ideal climate, green and lush all year, several clean rivers nearby, all tap water is from a natural spring, there is a creek that can be swum in on the property. Very close to Rio celeste (about 15 kms) which is one of the most beautiful places to visit in costa rica, also close to Heliconias hanging bridges park (8 kms). the house is pretty much technology free, no tv, phone, or internet...however if you have to use a phone you can borrow my cel phone...there is an internet place in bijagua and some places with free wifi. You can use my computer and or phone for a quick email check if needed (I can use my phone data as hotspot) . I have some speakers to plug in an ipod or other musical device... and there are lots of good books to read... I have a chill out spot outdoors under a roof and a fire pit as well so fires are cool, there is lots of fire wood...

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire house (except my personal bedroom) and the outdoor spaces including washing machine, hammocks, yard...meals included upon request (for an extra fee of 5$ per person per meal). Bedroom accomodates 2 people and there is space available for 2 more people in the living room if needed, hot shower is available. there is a gas stove as well as a wood burning stove out back and a beautiful sitting area.

Interaction with guests

I will be around cause I live here but the level of interaction will totally depend on what feels appropriate and comfortable...Sometimes I am out of town in which case a friend who stays when I am away may be hosting you.

Other things to note

I live in the house and my bedroom is off limits...there is a private guest room available which can accomodate 2 people (it has 2 single beds), there is also space in the house to accomodate 2 more people if necessary (in the living room). So there is a 4 guest maximum, but 2 of those 4 will sleep in the living room.

Valerie was an amazing host and her home in Bijagua (specifically the neighborhood of Zapote) were stunning! The location has a HUGE backyard with beautiful plant life and access to a small river where you can get into. There were hammocks in the backyard where my friends and I spent most of our time if we weren't exploring the surrounding parks or the town which are all within a 30 minute drive from. The home itself is lovely and comfortably slept 3 people (2 in a room and 1 on beds in the living room) with ample space to store all of our belongings. We would always have a hot shower after a long day's hike and felt safe in the small neighborhood and around Bijagua. Valerie opened up her home and we were allowed free range of all the amenities from the fridge, the outdoor fireplace, and everything in between. To top it all off, Valerie is a great cook and made us a delicious dinner and I'd highly suggest taking her up on the offer for only $5 (~2500 colones). She and a friend even took time to show us around Tenorio National Park and the Rio Celeste waterfall which was a huge plus since we only spoke a little Spanish and having her around was extremely helpful. Getting to Zapote is possible with a 2WD vehicle during dry season which is when we went but I would recommend a 4WD if the weather predicts rain or you go during the rainy season as the roads are a little bumpy and traction may become an issue when wet. Also, it will make accessing some of the hiking trails around Bijagua and other areas easier. However as I mentioned earlier, my friends and I were able to get to most places with our 2WD sedan. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our time with Valerie and in her home. My friends and I couldn't have asked for a better location to have as a home base for exploring or a better host as a guide for places to go! Especially for the price, this place can't be beat and if we're back in Bijagua we'll definitely be looking to stay with Valerie again!

Valerie was not home when we stayed at her house. She was very quick to respond to the airbnb text which was a plus. Her property was pretty and it is int he very small town of Zapoate. The mountains and rivers were amazing. The best part of the experience there were the people I befriended while staying there. The Howler monkeys were an alarm clock and what a great way to start the day! The cons- the bed and ALL the linens smelt like mildew. It is pet friendly but with that came flea bites- ugh! Additionally there was no room in the fridge for ur foods- it appeared as though someone was living in the unit and not prepped for guest arrival. All in all if you are looking for very simple accommodations and want to be close to Celeste Falls I recommend this place. It was nice to not have drive a distance to get to our next adventure.

Response from Valerie:
thanks for your feedback, the neighbour in charge is supposed to take care of making sure its clean etc but seeing as your reservation was made on the day of your arrival and she was out of town that day and the day before so i guess it was bad timing... strange about the fleas though cause no animals are ever allowed in the house... and there are usually no pets on the property... anyway sorry about all that...

The location is in a stunning farming village. The town Zopate is a population of 50 people. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we feel we have made lasting friendships. Valerie wasn't present while we stayed at her place but she was super helpful with all of our questions. Her directions are spot on so just trust them. Marce was who hosted us. She was sweet and made us feel comfortable and at home. If you are looking for affordable stay in Costa Rician country side, this is the best! Getting away from technology is so refreshing as well (but if you need it it is easy to get in town)
