Extra spacious

Guests love this home’s spaciousness for a comfortable stay.
a secluded hilltop retreat on 5 woodsy, landscaped acres; wood stove for cold-weather fires; large deck with gas grill; x-treme tennis court* with pavilion and fire ring; walking trails, many also suitable for cross-country-skiing**; well-behaved pets negotiable

note: parties and events are not allowed

* cracked surface adds a challenge (think Wimbledon meets Whack-a-Mole)

** (and, if you take certain trails, downhill skiing)

The space
bedrooms are on separate levels, each with adjacent bath and outdoor space, so everyone can enjoy a measure of privacy

large trestle table accommodates 8 people for meals, board and card games, family summits, etc.

your group has access to all common spaces in the cabin, but if your booking request is for just you and a significant other, I lock the second and third bedroom to keep those spaces sanitized—and, not coincidentally, off-limits to surprise, unpaid guests.

Guest access
guests have full use of the house with the exception of two walk-in closets used for storage; note: as mentioned above, in the past a few bookings that were made for two guests magically transformed into overnight visits by many more people, so the two downstairs bedrooms are locked unless there is prior confirmation of a need for additional sleeping accommodations.

Other things to note
there are many nearby options for comfort food: Clay Haus and Strong & Co. in Somerset or Horvath's Harbor, Port Smokehouse, and Papa Boo's on Buckeye Lake; for homemade ice cream: Weldon's Ice Cream in Millersport or Tom's Ice Cream Bowl in Zanesville; for local spirits: Sand Hollow Winery and Buckeye Lake Winery (7 and 12 miles away) and Buckeye Lake Brewery

Neighborhood highlights

we're in the Appalachian foothills, surrounded by ravines, natural springs and mature forest

small Native American earthwork on site, with significant monuments 2, 4.5 and 11 miles away (Glenford Fort, Flint Ridge, Newark Earthworks)

if our trees and critters aren't enough for you: Dawes Arboretum (10 mi.), Blackhand Gorge Nature Preserve (17 mi.), Mission Oaks Garden (23 mi.), and The Wilds (42 mi.)

plenty else to explore: three Glenford Lions Club tractor pulls every summer! Ohio's only public Civil War equestrian statue! site of Ohio's first Catholic church! the birthplace of the Liberator of Bulgaria! charming country roads with names like Big Inch, Dog Leg, Lonesome and Cinder Tipple! a Louis Sullivan-designed bank building! Ohio pottery tourism sites! Backwoods Festival (Sept.), Somerset Oktoberfest, and the New Crooksville Moonshine Festival (May) with the naming of Little Miss Moonshine—a beauty pageant, not underage drinking contest!

My work: Senior Lecturer, The Ohio State University
Lives in Glenford, Ohio
As an introvert, I'm a late-comer to the sharing economy—and 25 years of life on this former tree farm have only reinforced those hermit tendencies. But given my career of working with the art community in Latvia and teaching film history at Ohio State, even I have to acknowledge that there's nothing better than meeting interesting people, learning from each other, and helping folks feel comfortable with new ideas and in new contexts. (Rural life here in the Appalachian foothills among terrific neighbors teaches much the same thing.) For all that book and experiential learning, however, I wasn't clever enough to own my second home in a place where I'd go on vacation: Instead, it's 600 yards away from my primary residence, and now it's on Airbnb. My partner and I lived in the cabin listed here while restoring the original farmhouse on the property, and now having moved down the road a piece, nestled in a holler, we're happy to offer the hilltop views to you.
