Interaction with Guests
Maximum Thirty minute drive from the airport at Lihue (LIH), with secure off-street parking, Wifi and cable. I know the island well, express your area of interest I can provide recommendations. There's also a shelf of books devoted to Kauai and the islands for you and well as many other books from my personal collection in English, Castilan, Deutsch.
Poipu or South shore is very sunny as it's South and leeward of the mountain chain, but expect showers most days as in Camelot: that's how the island stays green and delivers rainbow's for your examination. At night, due South off the lanai look up: Yes, that's the milky way one can see (requires no clouds or moon)
Most visitors take a rental car. There's but one highway, around the perimeter except along North shore. One can't really get lost. However, for the patient Kauai Bus capillary and Poipu has it's own hourly shuttle. (website hidden) it or ask the friendly drivers and passengers.
Other Things to Note
Sandy beaches on either side of the building invite entry for a swim, surf, snorkel, or scuba which you'll see all hours of the day together with our large and I mean LARGE tortoises. Whale's further off shore in season November to April. Ride them at your own risk!
Note: In addition to the rate paid thru AIRBNB a tax for the State of Hawaii in the amount of 13.42 per cent must be paid in good funds before eKey sent! Gov'tmissuedmphoto ID each guest required. Simply snap a pic with your iPhone.
No smoking. This means anywhere in or outside. Did I say NO? And quiet. There's no airconditioning ( and none needed, Kauai ranges between 60 on the coldest night and 85 on the warmest day at Noon of the year). Kauai's a natural treasure: don't over consume. And please: no bottled water which becomes (website hidden). Wailea the wettest spot on earth (it's in the island's interior to your North) and it's volcanic. One can't do better than this for pure water from nature, not from Coca Cola, that's what it's all about when you're here. Aloha
This is a truly extraordinary location. The pictures don't do the view justice - one is surrounded by the sound and view of the ocean. Surfers, divers, and turtles are all in view from the deck. The best snorkeling on the island is literally 50 feet from the East-facing window. Gourmet restaurants and upscale shops are just a short walk and a shorter drive away. The "spouting horn" (must see) is a mile up the road. Old Koloa town is nearby. Absolutely recommend this spot!
The apartment itself is funky and fun, full of books, cool led-lighting, and kitsch. Much of the cabinetry/finishing is amateur work, but whatever. Be advised: there is no freezer and cooktop options are limited. We cooked yummy, but simple meals in the apartment and made use of the community BBQ.
You must have an iphone in order to operate the cool bluetooth door lock on the apartment.
Bill was a great communicator with super-fast turnaround time in all messaging - we on the other hand are busy high school teachers and it was sometimes frustrating for him that it could take us a day or two to respond to inquiries. Bill has made a number of (website hidden) documents/spreadsheets that lay out all the important information for the rental and are super useful. Bill made sure that we knew what we needed to know before our arrival and was a gracious host.
Overall, we give this rental a double thumbs-up and would definitely stay here again, if we ever get the chance!
We had a great stay. The description and guest comments were 100% accurate. Bill is extremely responsive to communication almost 24/7.
The condo is a corner unit with spectacular views of the ocean. We kept all the windows up and fell asleep each night to the sounds of the waves hitting the shore. The bed was sufficiently comfortable and spacious for two. This is a personal residence so you should not come here expecting 5-star hotel accommodations.
You should be aware that the bathroom does not have a door so it may be uncomfortable for some non-couples or even couples who desire privacy.
Bill is an exceptional host. He is full of advice and knowledge about the island. He is super responsive, and answered any questions we could even think of before we arrived.
The condo is located in a great part of the island. The east coast has terrible traffic, the southern coast is not bad at all.
We had a wonderful time!
Bill was in contact (via text) almost immediately after I requested the apartment. There were a few times I had questions before I arrived, and a couple shortly after I got to the apartment. In all cases, Bill was incredibly helpful and responsive, usually getting back to me in minutes.
The Good: This is an outstanding location! One can sit on the lanai and see beautiful sunrises, sunsets, wonderful ocean scenery, whales spouting and breaching (at least in December), and crystal clear night skies with the Milky way in full view. The apartment is very comfortable for two people, has comfy furniture, a pretty complete kitchen, and a good bed. Bill has a wonderful and diverse collection of books to keep you entertained, and fast Internet. There is also a sound system and TV, but we never turned them on (the Ocean and beach facing windows are entertainment enough). The building and lanai are right over the water; 2 minutes to a great snorkel beach, 1 minute to the Beach House restaurant, and a 10 minute walk (2 minute drive) to a shopping center with lots of restaurants and shops.
The Quirky: This is not a generic rental unit, it is clearly Bill's home. His personal belongings are put away in a closet, some drawers, and in a corner area. They were never in the way, but it did mean that there was not a closet, and only a few drawers, available for our stuff. We were only there for a couple days, so it was not a problem, but it might have been an issue if I was there for a week or two. The front door lock and many lights are controlled through iOS apps. This is really cool and worked flawlessly. The downside is that if you go swimming, you still need to have your phone accessible to get back into the apartment. There is a fridge, but no freezer; there is a separate ice maker.
The bottom line: This a nice apartment in a stupendous location -- I cannot imagine a better one. Bill is a very friendly and helpful host. If you are visiting the Poipu area, this is a great place to be!
Kuhio Shores 209 is Kauai " WOW" at a affordable price. Our host was welcoming, attentive and thorough. This is a second floor corner unit which faces the cove and the ocean. The Condo has a terrific location in Poipu and easy parking. The Condo is not a 5 - Star or 4 - Star Hotel nor should it be, instead it is a gentleman's retreat with some challenges which, given the price point, and location, were acceptable. Internet and key-less entry worked well. Owner has a quality library with additional books in the lobby. Watching surfers and turtles from the lanai after a day of Kauai exploring was a highlight of our day.
This was our first trip to Kauai and we could not have found a better location on the island. The surfing break was right outside the window (we didn't use it but there were always 10-20 surfers out there at any time!), and some of the best snorkeling on the island was 200 metres away. Other great swimming beaches were only 5-10 minutes drive. From the lanai & from sitting on the lounge inside, the view was spectacular. We spent hours watching the sea turtles every day and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks is still reverberating in our ears!
Within a 5 minute drive or a 15 minute walk there were some excellent restaurants and a gourmet food market; or another 15 minute drive to other supermarkets and shops at Koloa.
Bill was very hospitable and was responsive to our emails. He assisted with car rental, arranged for a parking permit and for easy collection of the apartment keys. The photographs of the apartment are fairly accurate for both the interior & the ocean views, and while there is mention that there is no air conditioning (which we were happy about), it was not mentioned that there were no fans. We did find the apartment hot, especially on the days & nights when there was no air movement outside (which was most of the 12 days and nights of our stay in September - might be different at other times of the year). The WiFi was great.
As first time Airbnb guests, we were a little unsure of what to expect. We did think that the apartment was a little cluttered with some personal items, but I guess that is all part of the Airbnb experience and it might be us that needs to re-calibrate. Overall, the location and views is what won us over.
Bill was a very responsive and accommodating host. The apartment has amazing ocean views (being right on the water), and was very close to local shops and restaurants. The apartment has a great Kauai feel, it was the perfect place for us to stay.
