The Space

Stunning quiet loft conversion with super king size bed and spare single mattress. Free parking, English spoken.Large en suite bathroom with toilet, shower and basin. Working area, relaxing area. Lots of natural light, quiet and peaceful with private staircase from middle floor of large town house in the centre of the peaceful Loire Valley 11/2 hours south of paris and near the beautiful chateaux of Chenonceau, Chaumont, Amboise, Cheverny, Chambord and Blois. Original exposed brick chimney, exposed beams, tiled floor. Kitchen is downstairs and equipped for exclusive use of guests. . Ideal for nightly or weekly rents, for cycling holidays, painting weeks, photography , bird watching, history buffs, wine tasting....and ideal for work from home for journalists, media, artists, musicians, IT programmers etc. Strong wifi connection available in the house . V Near to Blois & Tours, 11/2 hours south of Paris. Good train access and easy parking. Chenonceau, Chaumont, Amboise, & Cheverny Chateaux less than 30 minutes by car. Chambord 45 minutes by car. Ideal area for cycling, with cycle hire arranged by hostess. Babysitting service available. The village has a post office, boulangerie almost next door, excellent lunches served in bar next door, supermarket, daily bus service to nearby towns of Montrichard and Blois and a pizzeria and award winning restaurant, Hotel de l'Ecole.
The fantastic boulangery is almost opposite the house, just turn left and it is on the corner on the right. Choose your morning croissant, pain au raisin pain au chocolat etc then eat in your kitchen with everything else provided, oranges for fresh orange juice, milk, lavazza coffee, tea, jams butter etc etc.

Guest Access

Wifi throughout the house. Guest library stocked with local guide books, novels, maps. Excellent bike hire service with bikes delivered to the door. Air conditioning in the bedroom. Kitchen exclusively for guests.

Interaction with Guests

I enjoy welcoming people and helping them enjoy their holiday. Sometimes this means offering them a glass of wine or tea, hearing their plans, making suggestions for dinner, cycle routes etc. I have a separate part of the house for myself so we don't need to bump into each other but often a glass of wine together at the end of the day is welcome.
I work 2 days a week in Fontainebleau so if your arrival falls on one of those days, my friend Odile will receive you. I always ask for arrival time in advance to make sure the room is ready and we are here for you. PLEASE, no arrivals after 9pm unless under exceptional circumstances or with pre agreement.

The Neighborhood

The village is beautiful. I look out onto a stone square with other 400-600 year old buildings as neighbours. My stunning view is onto the 1,000 year old abbey/private chateau and gardens. We are surrounded by fields of sunflowers in summer, vineyards. The village goat's cheese shop is amazing. We have 3 wine makers in the village alone! I like to hang out at the pizzeria. Excellent deserts as well.

Getting around

You really need a car here. There are buses to Montrichard and to Blois but the car is the easiest and most flexible. Montrichard is 8km so cyclable and once there you can catch regular trains to Paris, Tours, Blois, Amboise.

Other Things to Note

Local cinema is excellent for arty films. The beach at Montrichard is real sand by the river and is great fun for boating and swimming in. Cycling though is the best activity because the countryside is so beautiful and flat.

  • So glad we decided to stay a night at Michele's lovely quirky home in picturesque Pontlevoy rather than an anonymous auto-route hotel on our way home from holidays. We were very well looked after and the huge room and bed were fantastically comfortable. Believe all the hype about the local boulangerie as well - and get there early!
This is a perfect base for exploring the incredible Châteaux scattered about the area.
Thanks for a really welcome break on the long journey home.

  • The room was so nice!! Big, bright, very nice decorated!
There was a kitchen for guest use very well equiped and with things for doing breakfast!
Michele was realy nice with us with a lot of recommendations of the things we can do!
Pontlevoy is a beatiful and quiet town near many of the most beatiful castles as Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Chaumont and the cities of Blois and Tours.
    Highly recomended!

violinist/English teacher
My name is Michele and until 5 years ago I was busy in Kent teaching violin to primary school children. I started the restoration of the house 4 years ago and opened 3 years ago as a b&b/hostel enjoying enormously the contact with all the guests that have passed through the house. The house is 400 years old and has taken a lot of time and energy and passion to restore. It now has all the original features of tiled floors and wooden beams but with modern power showers and central heating. The house is a social centre for the community as it was previously owned by a celebrated photographer and is opposite the abbey that runs degree courses and is populated by students during peak seasons. My children are mostly off travelling and studying in London. I have brought up 3 children and worked in London as a Music Therapist for 12 years, so I have plenty of experience with children. If you wish me to babysit, just ask. I now teach violin and piano privately and teach English in Paris 4 days a week. I play Irish fiddle in a band and play classical violin for dinners in local chateaux. My partner is French but speaks Spanish and Dutch and English and can occasionally be persuaded to cook and when he does it is WONDERFUL. Sadly my beautiful dog Nelson has gone back to his roots to a family in UK but I still have my cat, Hector. In the 4 years of running the b&b things have gone from strength to strength. It seems that the house chooses the people although the guests think they have chosen the house! The first year of opening I had a trickle of guests, all very kind and appreciative but still a trickle. The second year I had plenty of pyschiatrists, a life coach, a Buddhist retreat group, born again Christians and ordinary arty types. It seemed that the house chose the people necessary to guide me through my then, turbulent love life! The 3rd year, last year, with love life calm and happy the house attracted photographers, cooks, stylists, writers, followers of the Tour de France, flower arrangers, musicians etc etc. I was often fully booked and with the plumbing at full stretch I had a retired couple stay for 2 weeks from Australia who got chateaued out and went round fixing up all the necessary odd jobs! What can I tell you about me? I like meeting people. It is my pleasure to run this b&b and to meet people from all over the world, to speak French and to listen to what people want from their holiday. If you want to exhibit your art here? Ask. This is something I tried out last year and sold 3 photos. But I hadn't properly sorted out prices and prints and know that I could do better this year. The excellent up right piano has attracted pianists and singers who want to keep rehearsing and that suits me fine. I LOVE to hear the music in the house and if you are keen to rehearse with me on violin, then I would love that to. Life motto? For me the b&b has given me the privilege of seeing so many different people. So I guess from personal experience, I think its important to be happy. Simple but takes a lot of courage to implement. I can't live without decent coffee, plenty of hot water, music and delicious food. Oh and interesting people are certainly a plus. I like to meet people who live or think outside of the box. I guess, if you're struggling in life, you're welcome here! And if you're successful, you're also welcome! because I like to learn from people's lifestyles and choices. Current obsession is Paul Coehlo books...just finished a 5th. I have them all here if you want to borrow them...
