Los Nancites in Playa Negra was a really beautiful place (even during the dry season, which is when we went). The owner Cristian, his son Silvan, and the entire staff were very welcoming, kind, and informative. They helped us with anything we needed, from travel, to finding places to eat and visit, to even finding activities for us to do.
Traveling in costa rice with out a car can be a pretty big hassle. Cristian mentioned to us that having a car will give you more of an opportunity to explore this beautiful country, but there are other ways to get around. We called cabs to some of the places we weren't able to walk to and, met some people along the way who also helped us out.
The property of Nancites is very well kept, we saw the staff out there every day planting and maintaining the vegetation. We were able to hear, and see howler monkeys every morning 5am and every evening at 5pm. It was amazing!
All in all Los Nancites in Playa Negra is the perfect place to visit if you're looking to wind down, relax and catch some sun. I'd recommend it to anyone planning to go to Costa Rica. It will definitely be memorable!
Peter and Yunimar,
Merci! On recommande vivement
Christian ended up putting us in another property on the same lot as this "Grand Studio". It's a gated property called Los Nancites ((website hidden)). SO this isn't a review of this particular accommodation so much as it is a review of the host. We actually looked at the Grand Studio in person when we arrived and it looked very nice, new and clean.
Just to note, Christian can communicate via email in english, but speaks french & spanish and has a hard time talking with you in english.
So we ended up in a 2 bedroom house that appeared as though it hadn't been inhabited for a (website hidden) didn't seem like this house had been prepped for our arrival. It wasn't what I would consider clean, especially in comparison to other accommodations we had in costa rica through airbnb. There were lots of cob webs and bugs. The floors were extremely dirty. Walking on them for only a few minutes resulted in black feet.
We were willing to deal with it for the couple of nights (wear flip flops) and say nothing. However there was no hot water when we arrived. We had 2 cold showers and realized that his posting specified hot water and it's advertised on the sign out front of Los Nancites for all the houses/studios as you enter the property. So we wrote him an email on our second night as he mentioned this was his easiest form of communication. We mentioned that we had no hot water and decided to mention the floors not being very clean. We thought maybe he could have a cleaner come in the next day OR that maybe he would reduce our daily rate. We were paying $150 a night for this place and it seemed over priced.
The next morning he woke us up at the front door and proceeded to sternly yell at me about the email saying it was rude and that he can't believe we would tell him his floors are dirty. He said he's a doctor so he knows what clean is! He wouldnt' allow me or my boyfriend to talk or reason with him. He also made me feel the hot water tap - which was now running hot water - and yelled "is this hot?!" he obviously had just turned on the water heater. We were not trying to argue or defend ourselves as he wouldn't let us talk, but he then said we had to leave and that he was kicking us out. We couldn't stay another minute and he would refund us. As he stormed out without letting us say a thing, he admitted he forgot to turn on the water because he is "an old man". After we gave him time to cool down we wrote another email saying he had to honour the airbnb reso and we never heard another word. This person is rude and unreasonable and I would not recommend dealing with him.
Hello Lauren. I am sorry to read this. All our guest say the exact opposit.
Lauren : Instead of coming up( 50meters walk ) to our house and let us know about your complains, you choose to send very rude and directive emails. Maybe you could try to re- read them and realize that.
I won't comment the lies and arrangements you made in your comment to make it sound true. I know it is useless.
As everyones knows, our houses are cleant and prepared for every new guest OF COURSE !!! We are not crazy and don't want to ruin our reputation.
Also : You had a free upgrade to a 2 bedrooms instead of a studio and payed 110$ (not 150..).
However, we do live in the country, in a dry area during dry season. And when the wind blows as it sometimes blows strong at this period of the year... Of course some dust from the dirtroads and the trails or the dry leafs make their way into the houses within minutes. Everyone who lived in a house in tropical country knows that ( unless you live in a bunker with AC full on all day and closed windows).
This makes also the charm of the area. No asphalt. Lots of trees... Most of the people understand this... And even love this !
This comes along with "nature"... Some people prefer the luxury of a golf court hotel. Matter of taste, i respect that.
I have no power to tell the wind not to blow. I cannot come every 30mn to clean the floor. (we are not a hotel but a vacation rentals). what I can do is having a normal talk with people that come to me and try to let them have the best experience and the best vacation. It seems to work most of the time if I believe what our guests write.
We work a lot to make this place look as good as it is. Haven't you enjoyed the beauty of the trees, the garden, the pool, the tropical birds and the monkeys... And of course the bugs ( this is the food for birds... No bugs no birds !). We live in the middle of nature and of course you cannot tell animals to "not enter a private property" ! But seriously don't you think you're exagerating ? Would we have guests coming back if it were that bad ? We're open for almost 10 years and we try to make it better every year. We love suggestions and we hear them.
Regarding your way of writing emails, To be honest, I don't allow myself to speak this way to my own staff. There are some oldschool rules and behaviors I am proud to respect. Maybe due to my age.
When people check in I always tell them : "if you have any trouble or see anything that doesn't work, please come up and let us know". Doing this would have let you take hot showers from the first day.
Maybe are you used to have people around you that obey whatever you might say. Even if you treat them with no respect. Being 65years old and also a former doctor, I had the opportunity in my life to deal with a lot of people. Some nice, some not. I never let people disrespect me but I always try to help the best I can. That comes from my past as a doctor I guess.
I'm not here to lecture you but I can tell you this is the first time in 10 years I have such an experience.
This was amazing! Christian and his wife was the perfect combo of friendly and giving us privacy! The pictures don't give this place justice, it's so much better! As we also said while being there, you can't take a picture that describe it, you gotta be there to fully enjoy it!
I was so very much looking forward to staying here during my visit to Costa Rica. Unfortunately, we were not made aware of the difficulties of travel on the Nicoya Peninsula during the rainy season. We were re-routed 5 times and 15 hours , but even more unfortunate – our phone calls and e-mails we made to Christian were never returned. We had hoped that maybe they could either provide us with some insight as to how to travel to their location. We even tried to re-schedule some of our future reservation stays so that we could still come to Christian’s place – but having never received any communication back from them, we had to stay in a “not so nice” place for 2 nights until our next reserved location was available. I do truly hope that we did not receive responses from them due to the incredibly sporadic internet & cellular accessibility in those areas of Costa Rica.
Hello Leigh Anne. This is the mail I received from you saying you would arrive around 2pm : Quote :"Christian, We left from Santa Teresa today around 1:30. After 6 hours - 1 successful river crossing - and 1 long drive that led to a very deep river - we had to turn back around and have ended up in Cobano also that in the morning we can take the very long way around to get to you guys. We should be getting in by 2 - sorry for any inconvenience! Leigh-Anne " end quote
I was worried and sent you a message but got no answer. If you wish to reschedule I would be happy to welcome you here of course. But when a customer writes to say he will arrive later it is normal that I do not worry about him finding the way to come ... Am I wrong ?
Anyhow as I said you are welcome if you want to reschedule.
