The Space

Each one of our eight rooms has its own entrance, one queen bed, with fitted sheet and duvet, quality mattress, writing desk, lockbox, bathroom with hot water, shower, towels and soap. Each room has a view into the palm filled courtyard. The style is rustic ranch meets open concept industrial loft, finished minimally with concrete steel and wood. Each room is a little bit different. (Photos shown are an assortment of rooms.) All rooms are the same price and include taxes. Please look for our other 7 listings if you can't find availability on this listing. Note: we use AirBNB exclusively and do not take bookings by email or over the phone. DRIFT has a hotel business license and is registered to pay taxes.

Guest Access

We have a shared kitchen and free wireless internet. The firepit, rooftop lounging area and shared patio spaces are great spots to meet other guests. We have a small retail store with t-shirts, sandals etc, as well as some self serve snacks and beverages available for sale. Air conditioning is available for an additional 20 USD a day.

Interaction with Guests

We will arrange for someone to be on site to open the gate upon your arrival, give you your keys, show you where everything is, and help out with any basic questions you may have. We do not have a traditional hotel reception, so once you have your keys you can come and go on your own. Our staff is on-site during the day, and happy to help out in any way possible.

The Neighborhood

DRIFT SAN JOSE is centrally located one block from the cathedral and main plaza, in the heart of the Historic Art District. San Jose del Cabo is a traditional Mexican colonial town, but also has a contemporary gallery and restaurant scene. The town swings between lively and sleepy, giving visitors a taste of both. The cobblestone streets are often closed to cars in order to accomodate the many events, such as live music and outdoor dining. Thursday night is the popular Art Walk - and the Saturday morning Organic Market is 5 minutes by foot. The beach is a 20-30 minute walk either through the colorful town, or by way of a jogging trail, that winds through the estuary and bird sanctuary. If you are staying longer than a few days we recommend renting a car or 4x4 to explore the many beaches, desert, the East Cape, Todos Santos, Santiago, Cabo Pulmo or Balandra Bay in La Paz. DRIFT SAN JOSE makes a perfect jumping off point for surfing, kitesurfing, hiking, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, stand up paddle etc.

Getting around

DRIFT is located downtown San Jose del Cabo, 20 min from the Los Cabos International Airport (airport code SJD) where taxis ($65) and shuttles ($15) are available to bring you into downtown. Once in San Jose, taxis are always available close by in front of the Cathedral. Rental cars cars can be found at the airport or National has an office less than two blocks from DRIFT. If you have a car there is plenty of free parking in nearby streets.

  • Drift is exactly as the pictures show, clean and minimalist, it has everything you need and nothing you don't. It is exceptionally good value.

What the pictures do not show is how awesome a host Stu is. Stu gives the whole property a very calming feeling and is a sea of knowledge about the local area. Stu encouraged us to get a car and explore his recommendations, they were all great.

There is a pool being installed in the front yard at the moment and this will only improve the property further.

Stu's dog Clara helps make the property feel more like a home away from home rather than a hotel.

    Highly recommended!

  • We highly recommend Drift! We agree with previous guests: it's very clean, surrounded by awesome restaurants and galleries, a nice walk to the beach and Stu has a very friendly and accommodating staff. Stu responded promptly to our last-minute inquiry requesting a reservation and he was very helpful translating for us when there was some confusion with a transportation issue. He's got a great thing going at Drift and we hope to come back in the fall.
Besides the awesome restaurants Stu recommends (we tried a few of them and they were all fantastic), we also recommend a new little fish taco stand that just opened about two blocks from the French bakery. It's called Mariscos de Chino. Everything we had there was incredible-including all kinds of homemade salsas and sauces, and the owner, Chino (nickname meaning curly) and his wife are really friendly. If you go, tell him Karen & Curtis from Idaho sent you : )

  • Great place to have a wonderful stay in cabo

  • This unique boutique hotel is an exceptional alternative to the lazy routine resort travelling. A whole new appreciation for the Baja courtesy of our first yet perfect Airbnb experience. Drift completely changed our perception of Mexico and left us with planning our next return visit. We recently stayed for five nights over the Easter Long Weekend with a group of 7. Despite the holiday, Drift encouraged a number of Cabo adventures from Art Walks on Thursday, Farmers Market on the Weekend to visiting neighbouring creative projects in the making. We definitely recommend renting a car & were super impressed with the service from National Car Rental (just a couple of blocks from Drift) - they gave us a great rental package (+ bonus of being a Drift referral). The most amazing food experiences all within walking distance: brunch at Lolita's, the perfect thin crust pizza joint, Argentinian steak house to the most amazing tacos. Or get in the car for the best fish tacos & pesto ceviche at the Drunken Sailor or for you pork lovers the best Carnitas ever.

A collection of open concept plans offer a unique experience within each of the 8 rooms. Drift has a modern do it yourself approach with the perfect combination for raw minimalist detailing: white walls, black steel, concrete detailing and beautiful sliding doors. Loved how the carefully placed communal kitchen, fire pit, and 2nd floor terrace open up to great conversations & spontaneous out of town adventures. I highly recommend to those who want to really experience the Baja, you should definitely consider Drift as your first pick. Its the greatest home base for learning all the hidden gems of waterfalls to hot springs, modern architectural homes to enjoying the company of our lovely hosts Bajacowboy & Clarita. • Stu has created an amazing experience at Drift. From the beautiful courtyard to the simple but stunning rooms, common spaces with firepit, kitchen, and patios -- it is an oasis in San Jose del Cabo. Just down the street from the church with plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk, you can't go wrong. It's about a 20 - 25 min walk to the beach, but taxi cabs in the main square are ready to take you there day or night. I can't say enough about how well the whole Drift concept works. If you are San jose del Cabo, make it a point to spend a few nights at Drift, you'll be SO glad that you did!

  • Stu (email hidden). He's created an amazingly calm and comfortable place to stay in the Arts District of San Jose and I would highly recommend. He has an excellent staff and a sweet dog, Clara that he is training now to become a good member of the DRIFT team. Very nice place to stay and fair price.

  • Best airbnb experience yet. Going to be really hard to beat!

  • Having traveled quite a bit, I can say I'm picky about accommodation. I generally look for something different, something in the feel and style that stands out, for a reasonable price. Drift is exactly this. A wonderful little oasis of quiet, incredibly stylish in its sobriety. It is a gem that is not to be missed. Stu (email hidden) and you'd be mad not to ask for his recommendations on what to do. He will make you discover a Cabo you never knew existed. I would strongly recommend renting a car for your stay, there is a lot to see and it's not easily accessible otherwise.

  • An oasis and escape from a routine hotel experience. Everything about my stay was convenient, comfortable and accessible. The room was exactly what I expected and more. Love the door/windows - excellent concept executed with passion and great taste! Right in downtown, and Stu is great! Looking forward to another stay at DRIFT, next time I'll bring friends!

About
I used to help design, build and market "experiences" in luxury resort communities around the world. Uugh. I left this work to follow my real passion, to create a hotel and brand based on the idea of independent travel. DRIFT is an alternative to package tourism and all-inclusive resorts. It is a travelers hotel - our guests prefer a basic do-it-yourself atmosphere over expensive luxury amenities and services - so money saved can be spent on real adventure. I opened in January 2014 - and have had lot of positive feedback - there is a real desire for this alternative to traditional hotels. I use AirBNB exclusively to book because AirBNB members are open to new ideas and experiences in hospitality. I have met amazing people through AirBNB. I currently live on-site with my adopted street dog Clara. Every day we are working to make the hotel better and better. Soon I will be looking for a full-time live-in caretaker/manager to run the hotel so I can start looking for investors or partners to help me expand on my concept. I have 8 listings on AirBNB - if you can't find the dates you are looking for please try searching my other listings.
