After a busy day exploring the city or a lazy day on the beach, come home to your comfortable room w/private bath. My neighborhood is quiet; a nice place to come back and relax after a long day of sightseeing or beach trip.
Your room has a comfortable (firm) queen size bed w/closet and plenty of dresser drawers, with a private bath attached. The room (accommodating two) is a soothing place to return after a busy day.
Enjoy the patio in the backyard, or relax in the living areas if you desire some down time. Help yourself to coffee/tea/water in the kitchen - and I can always find room in the fridge if you have something you'd like to keep there.
I have beach towels, mats, and chairs for your use at the beach and a small cooler for you to fill w/drinks and picnic items if you wish.
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy meeting people and getting to know something about them. However, if you're more reticent, I will happily respect your desire for privacy. This is my home, and I welcome you as I welcome all my friends and family.
Please note that even though my check-in time is 3pm, many days it is available earlier if you need to check-in sooner. We can chat about our mutual needs for check-in as we go through the booking process. Thanks!
Location, location, location! I chose this spot for its proximity to both the city and the beach-a 10 min. drive to either. In my immediate neighborhood, you'll find a walking trail, as well as ponds that attract turtles, egrets&herons.
It's a quiet area and close to other amenities right here on James Island -for live music fans, the Pour House is on Maybank Hwy (just a 6 min. drive) and right next door The Lot restaurant featuring local products, as well as the Terrace Theater, which shows many indie films. Several good restaurants too - the Brickhouse Kitchen (5 min from my home-and also a live music venue), the Fat Hen and Wild Olive (on John's Island - approx 15 min.away). So here on JI or into Charleston, good eats await you!
There is a bus line about a 10 min walk away (the bus line is called CARTA, if you'd like to check out how it runs online). However, if you are car-less a taxi or UBER is the best way to get to the city or beach if you want to set your own schedule. If you are driving, I have a spot in front of my home for your vehicle. If flying in, the airport is about a 20-25 min. drive. If you book, I can give you directions or it's also easily mapped online.
Other Things to Note
Charleston has a wonderful visitor's center right in the middle of town on Meeting St. with a wealth of information on sightseeing in and around the city. Check out my guidebook at the bottom of this page to view fun things to see/do w/in 10-15 min of my home.
Also when planning your stay, if you want to fine dine, it's a good idea to make reservations in advance-I believe that most restaurants in the area use the open table booking application accessible right on their websites. There's a plethora of bars/restaurants in town . . . too many to list! There are a couple of rooftop bars - always fun to see the city from a roof (Vendue Range and Market Pavilion Bar). If you're a fan of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, you might want to check out Fuel or Dixie Supply - both fun options.
Charleston is history-filled, so many options to explore if your interest runs that way. It's known as the "Holy City" because there are many churches in town - some of them quite old relative to the age of our nation.
Broad street is known for its art galleries.(altho' there are many galleries not on Broad!) East Bay is closest to the water and Waterfront Park, and King Street is the shopping mecca.
Please, no smoking or pets. It should go without saying, but my expectation is that we will all treat each other with respect. Come and go as you like - I enjoy myself when I travel and want only the same for my guests. So, come visit! I look forward to meeting you.
Joyce literally met us at her door. Her home was so close to everything we were planning on doing and more. In true B&B fashion there was an array of breakfast goodies. Joyce and Judy both love flower gardening and quite enjoyed comparing favorites. Would recommend that you visit and take time to enjoy her outdoor seated garden. Highly recommend a visit. Thanks Joyce!
Within 5 minutes of meeting Joyce, she felt like an old friend! She has that special knack of making you feel very welcome and comfortable, and clearly enjoys people & sharing her lovely home. The bedroom and adjoining bath are sparkling clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated, as is the rest of the home. Though Joyce was at work when we breakfasted, things were all set out for us, and we could choose breakfast things from her fridge. We benefited from her suggestions about the area, and used some of the excellent Charleston area publications she had to choose our activities. We highly recommend, and would happily stay again!
It was truly a pleasure staying with Joyce in her beautiful home. Joyce's hospitality was exceptional and her personal touches made our visit to Charleston a very special experience indeed. Each morning we were greeted with a lovely breakfast and when Joyce learned that I had not been feeling well she even took the time to make a lovely pot of tea (in place of the coffee that was always ready.) The bathroom was stocked with lovely shampoos and items and the bed was super cozy. Finally, Joyce was so helpful with all of our, "tourist" questions and she helped make sure that we had information about our destinations. There is no doubt why Joyce has been recognized as a, "super host." She clearly earned that status and more with us. Thanks again, Joyce, for all that you did to help make our stay in Charleston a very memorable one.
Joyce was prompt in communicating. We arrived later than we anticipated due to flight delay which did not pose any issues. Our room was as described, private room and attached bathroom. Joyce was a great hostess, giving us space and great conversation when we wanted. Her banana bread and homemade preserves are a daily AM treat and evening wine or beer a welcome "Ahhhh" at the end of a busy tourist day! Joyce has a great location within easy distance to Folly Beach and Charleston proper. We would definitely stay with Joyce again!
Joyce met us with tips on where to start our explorations in Charleston and a Fodors guide to use during our stay. Home was very comfy and welcoming, neighborhood quiet and quaint. Nice bike/ walking path around the perimeter and park up the street. We were on our own for breakfast as Joyce had to work early but she left us plenty of goodies to choose from including homemade banana bread :)
Joyce was an amazing host. Her home was beautiful and welcoming. She made sure that I had everything I needed from towels, to toiletries, to even food in the morning. I would highly recommend Joyce to anyone looking to stay in the Charleston area.
Joyce was super friendly and met us when we pulled in. We talked for a long time about all kinds of different things. Her house is cooly decorated with lots of plants. The room was very comfy and we slept well. House was in a nice location near James Island. Breakfast was also nice...yummy bagels, jams, and coffee. Good quality stuff from Trader Joe's.
As a military "brat," I grew up all over the US, and also in a couple of overseas posts. Spent most of my adult life in Maryland raising two daughters.
After working 18+ years for a local government (legislative branch) in Maryland, I got a chance to early retire, and I took it! I have family in South Carolina, and after a lifetime of driving up and down I95, I decided it was time to get closer to them. The historic city of Charleston was the perfect fit for me. With its wealth of history to explore, and its proximity to lovely local beaches, how could I resist?
Aside from history, I enjoy gardening, good stories, walking the beach looking for shells, and spending time with people that I enjoy.
Love traveling just about anywhere. Places with great natural beauty and an interesting history are right up my alley. I've been fortunate to visit 3 wonderful cities in Italy (Rome, Florence and Venice) and Prague in the Czech Republic, as well as many lovely places here in the US.
I hope you'll enjoy getting to know me a little, and I look forward to getting to know you. Thanks for checking out my listing, and enjoy your stay!
