Where you’ll be

Beyoğlu, İstanbul, Turkey

For the last few years, travelers in the know have followed sophisticated locals to the neighborhoods of Galata and Karaköy—both north of the Old City, in the Beyoğlu district.
Here, young Turks and foreigners have poured their creativity (and cash) into cavernous old buildings and waterfront warehouses and created thriving new hubs in which to shop, eat, and stay.
Tumbling down steep hills to the Bosphorus, Beyoğlu had foundered after its zenith as a cosmopolitan, multicultural enclave at the turn of the twentieth century. (Then called Pera, it was a magnet for the likes of Hemingway, Trotsky, and Agatha Christie.)

When I first moved to Istanbul, these streets were eerily empty at night. Then the revving economy of the 2000s began to inject new life into Galata, and stunning fin-de-siècle buildings were converted into luxury flats and designer ateliers.
That rapid gentrification soon rolled down the slope to Karaköy—formerly a hangout for repair-shop workers and fishmongers—whose total transformation was all but assured with the 2004 opening of the Istanbul Modern art museum.

Today, Karaköy and Galata are dynamic patchworks of time-worn architecture and leading-edge culture, with traces of gritty commercialism: a little scruffy, a bit self-consciously bohemian, and set against the Bosphorus’s irrepressible glamour and beauty.
