Pros: Michael and Rute's house is gorgeous and secluded. The drive to and from is breathtaking. The landscape was our favorite, because it gave us a feeling of a tropical garden. For such a small house on such a large piece of property, the space is very well used and decorated. We would visit again. Cons: Everything was fantastic upon arrival, except for that fact that there was a little bit of trash under the bed and the A/C has black mold all on the inside. The A/C filter was also covered in dust, indicating that it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. This was very disgusting. It's also disappointing that a cleaning fee is charged when the guests actually have to clean the house for the next guests. The neighbor apparently does a walk through, but only to visually inspect things. The guests are asked to wash all the linens and towels, prepare the bed for the next guests, sweep trash and dust out, and put cleaned dished away. Therefore, we believe there shouldn't be a cleaning fee if the current guests are to prepare the majority of the house for the next arrival. Overall, we give it 4/5 stars.

Great place if you like simple seclusion. The home has everything you need to take to the beach, to have a BBQ out on their luscious grounds, or to cook indoors. Fairly close to shopping and not a difficult drive to Volcano National Park, Hilo, or several other activities. Only spent 4-days there...wished I would have planned the entire week there then come back another time for the Kona side.

Response from Michael:
Thanks for the kind words. It's funny about the bed because someone wrote another review on another site saying that the bed was to hard. Wish we could have two beds, one hard and one soft that way a person could choose. I know what you mean about staying only four days, you just get used to the place and then you have to leave. When we go over, we try and stay for a month and then it's hard to leave and come back to cold weather. Please feel free to come back any time you wish. Mahalo Mike and Rute

When we arrived, we were excited about the beautiful property and cute little studio cottage. Unfortunately, when we entered the cottage, we realized that it hadn't been cleaned. There were dried eggs on the stove top, dirty floors, and a clearly used bathroom from the last guests. Okay, mix-ups happen. It was only 4:30 pm, plenty of time for the maid to come out and clean, so we made the call. Long story short, after many excuses, blaming "the other maid" and the owner, we got a call from Michael. We were told a maid was not available, and we had to clean it ourselves; he offered to give us the $50 cleaning fee. Really? No maid? So my husband and I spent our first night in Hawaii scrubbing the toilet and cleaning the cottage instead of enjoying a glass of wine on the lanai. Pretty disgusting. In addition, there was a big pile of stinking garbage (a full garbage can, full recycle bin, and three additional bags of garbage) outside under the kitchen window that he said would be picked up in the morning. Needless to say, they were still there when we left two days later. We couldn't even open the windows on that side of the cottage because it smelled so bad. I told Michael, the owner, that we didn't want to be paid $50 to be his maids, but that we should at least get the $95 rental fee back for the first night, but he ignored us. No, I would not recommend this rental to anyone.

Great quiet cottage in the tropics. We loved eating the fruit off the trees. Very clean and has A/C which was a bonus. We would definitely stay here again.

Michael was a great host. Giving out detailed information on where and what to do all over Maui, he was extremely hospitable and was always ready and willing to help. He was always quick to reply to any questions and the accommodation was amazing. Situated in the suburbs, it really felt like an authentic Hawaiian experience. I would definitely recommend to any and all of my friends

The place is in a big yard full of palm and fruit trees. There are neighbors but you can't see or hear them so it feels very private. The cottage had everything we needed and we were very comfortable there. The bed was very comfortable and we loved the patio space with the hammock and table and chairs. Amazingly, despite the rain, there weren't mosquitos. I would love to go back and highly recommend if you want a place a little out of Hilo but still close by for a quick drive (approx 30 min). There is a supermarket about 10-15 min away which was very helpful.
