Mililani and Don have a beautiful, comfortable home located just outside the national park. It is in a quiet neighborhood on several acres of wild forest and tidy garden. The profusion of anthurium was stunning, and many were in vases decorating the inside of the home. It was perfect for our family visit to the Big Island. Our hosts were super helpful, communicative, and available, but not overly so. If we had had more time we would have wanted to get to know them better than we did when they showed us the house. I highly recommend staying at their Maluhia Guest House!
We were a group of 10 adults who came for a holiday to Hawaii. We stayed at this house for 2 nights. Even though we reached the house at around 230am, the hosts waited to receive us and show us around the house. They were so sweet that they left us bread and homemade guava jelly for the next day. We were all thoroughly impressed by their hospitality and kindness. Mililani and Don emailed us a list of things to do and places to eat in advance. Very easy to communicate over email. We recommend you stay at this house while you are near the volcano national park. You wont find such lovely hosts anywhere :)
Mahalo Miloni and Friends for the very kind review. We hope that you will come and visit us again at the Maluhia Guest House. Thank you for introducing our guest house to your friends. Best wishes to you all. Mililani and Don Hughes. By the way, I told my friend that you enjoyed her homemade guava jelly and she was so happy.
Mahalo mahalo mahalo to Mililani and Don Hughes! We tremendously enjoyed our time at the Maluhia Guest House. Upon arrive the house was beautiful! Spacious, yet cozy, wonderful climate, and most importantly, very inviting and accomodating to our 18 people that traveled with us. Mililani and Don were even more accomodating and hospitable, reassuring us that if there is ANY problems or we need help with something at the house, for us to not hesitate to call them. True ALOHA SPIRIT these people. We were worried about the hot water for that many people. It was not at all a problem, if everyone took 10-15min baths, it was fine. I can go on and on about how beautiful, well kept and inviting this place was and it still wont do it justice. The best way to explain it is to say, "YOU MUST STAY HERE." It was a wonderful experience, one that my halau we always remember. Mahalo again Mililani and Don. Aloha nui!
The Maluhia Guest House was without a question the right place for our family trip. Even the drive to and from the Hilo area was pleasant - no stop & go traffic, gradually transitioning from quaint residences to more greenery, solitude, serenity and cooler temperatures! I am so glad we chose your home, instead of a hotel. It allowed us to gather together as a family - sharing the kitchen, bathroom - things we have not done since our “younger” years! Lots of laughter and "around the dining room table" talks. Nearly everything we needed was in the house. The open architecture and decor added to the peacefulness of the entire experience.
We especially appreciate your attention to our specific family needs. Your guidance and personal touches were invaluable to making our stay successful. I am already looking forward to my next trip back!
We spent a large amount of time finding just the right house that could hold the number of adults we were working with for our retreat. There were 11 in total. We finally settled on Maluhia and were pleased from the get go, weeks before we even got there! The Hughes were more than accomodating. We were able to contact them prior to our official start date and they even let us take a look at the house a week prior to aid in preparation! While we were there they stopped by just to make sure everything was okay.
It was more than okay. The house was very spacious, even with all of us adults and our luggage and all the food we brought with us. The rooms were a perfect size, the house was warm and when it wasn’t we just had to turn on the gas “faux wood” stove in the livingroom. There was plenty of hot water for showering AND washing dishes and the beds, comforters and pillows were oh so comfortable.
The street itself was so peaceful. No traffic at all. The only sounds we heard from outside were the beautiful calls of the birds in the early morning and throughout the day. So peaceful. So calming.
We felt comfortable knowing that if there were any problems, we could call the Hughes though we didn’t need to. Overall the house lended to a great retreat experience and several of us are already planning our own family getaways there.
