Enjoy a spacious island home for your mountain adventure on Hawaii Island with your friends and family near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. See the gamut of Hawaiian life in the rainforest and quaint village of Volcano.

The space

The Maluhia Guest House vacation rental is a huge house with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and enough beds to sleep 12 people. Specializing in hosting large groups, this rental is made to let our guests enjoy the whole house, its complete kitchen and spacious landscaped yard. It is located in a native 'ohia forest in a quiet neighborhood in Volcano on the island of Hawaii.

Located on the slopes of Kilauea, it is within a five minutes drive to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Volcano Art Center Gallery, the Kilauea Military Camp and Recreation Area, the Volcano Golf course, and the Volcano village with its many restaurants and shops. Visit the National Park. Take a hike or two. Play a round of golf. Enjoy some great food. Explore the little village of Volcano. Travel down to Ka'u to see black sand beaches and turtles basking on the sand or travel to Hilo and swim in fresh water spring fed beaches.

Nature abounds with giant tree ferns (hapu'u and ama'u), native trees ('ohi'a), and shrubs. Birdwatchers can see many native birds right from the bedroom windows. Enjoy the quiet of the evenings and watch the moon rise from among the native forest. There are many things to do if that is your choice or you can relax and enjoy the quiet of the environment.

If you're looking for a quiet, secluded getaway with all the amenities of a relaxing home... look no further. Having booked with numerous vacation rentals 2-3 times a year over the last 15 years on the islands, I would put this home at the top of my list.

Nice House in the middle of the jungle, quiet, spacious. Heating is only possible trough one small fire place - so we had cold in the night. But with additional linen it was ok. Thank the hosts very much for the warm welcome - we had wounderful days exploring the lava!! Great!

Response from Mililani:
Enjoyed hosting this group who were such considerate guests. This past winter has been the coldest in several years with snow still on the mountain tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

My extended family of 10 stayed here over the Christmas holiday. The rooms were many and all were spacious. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, utensils and basic condiments; they even had laundry detergent available in the laundry room (which I didn't expect to need, but I was messy!). This is a great place to stay for access to Volcano National Park; but if you're looking for a wild nightlife, this isn't the town to be in. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of this residential neighborhood and spent a lot of time in the park which was about 2 miles away. There are several good restaurants nearby but nothing is within walking distance. Downtown Hilo has lots to do, but it is about an hour away. The house is easy to get to from the airport - about 35 minutes away with only a few turns. Mililani and Don met us at the house at 9:30 pm (!) to walk us through the house, showing where things were etc. They were friendly and helpful. It rains ALOT in Volcano, so be sure to bring rain jackets! Mahalo!

Our group was comprised of 5 couples and this house fit our needs perfectly to provide beds for all. The grounds and greenery were breathtaking and we loved being cozily tucked in to the rainforest in our peaceful hideaway. We came over from a neighboring island to do some long runs and hikes in the park and to check out the lava flows (AMAZING!!!). The kitchen was perfectly equipped for us to cook our own meals and we spent many hours lounging in front of the fireplace warming up after long days of exploring in the rain. The home was incredibly clean and the beds and linens were warm for the cold nights. Most importantly, the nights and mornings were QUIET. Having stayed in many places on the Big Isle I can happily say not a coqui frog was heard nor rooster or other early morning pest :) Mililani and her husband were such a pleasant and warm hosts. They met us at at home and had the fireplace roaring and and ready for us to arrive. Prior to our arrival, they sent us helpful tips and reminders. We can’t thank you enough for sharing for your lovely retreat! Rosie from Oahu

Mililani and Don Hughes are the hosts of the Maluhia Guest House. Both are retired teachers and school administrators. Don is a rancher in Volcano with a small operation offering grass fed beef. They have lived in Volcano since 1981 and are well known in the community for their volunteer work.

They love to share the island with visitors. Mililani is a poet and writer who is very interested in Hawaiian culture. She is a hula student. Don is a science teacher who is interested in physiology and anatomy. His current interest besides cattle ranching is enlarging his biodiesel production.

Both have traveled to continental USA, Japan, Great Britain, Italy, and France. They like to travel and learn more about the lifestyles of the everyday people. As hosts, they would like to show guests what the aloha spirit is like outside of the Waikiki stereotype.
