Stone house amid vineyards and forest, bordered by stream. 1 hr west of Montpellier, beaches 40 minutes, shopping 5 minutes. On quiet country road; nearest neighbor 1 km. Gas fridge & heat/hot water; 12-V lighting; 1000-W 120-V generator. 1 week min
The house gets village water and has a phone line but is off the grid. Guests are provided with deep cycle batteries and a 1000-W generator and a small inverter (for US or French voltage) . The generator can be used to recharge the house batteries or run laptops and small appliances, and the inverter (which can be run from the house batteries or your car's 12-volt receptacle) is handy for recharging electronic devices and running small appliances. Guests furnish their own gasoline for the generator. All the rooms have modest halogen lighting, and there are plenty of oil lanterns and candles. The kitchen has a gas refrigerator and gas oven and stove with 4 burners. The bedrooms and bathroom have gas radiators. There is also a gas radiator in the living room (all radiators vent to the outside), but most guests prefer the large stone fireplace. There is unlimited seasoned firewood stacked behind the house. The 18-inch walls and marble floor downstairs keep the house cool in the hot Languedoc summer.
One bedroom has a single bed. The other two bedrooms each have a double bed: the house sleeps 5.
This house is not for everyone: no TV, no swimming pool, make your own electricity. But it offers the experience--unusual for village-oriented France--of a modest stone house in the middle of the countryside.

Interaction with Guests
Guests will be met at the house by the caretaker for keys and instructions on charging batteries, etc. The caretaker does not live on premises, so you must be on time and to let the caretaker know of a delayed arrival. The caretaker will bill for waiting time, which will be deducted from the deposit.
The house is surrounded by vineyards and forest (scrub oak and chestnut). Wildlife includes sanglier (wild boar), which you may see along the road at night. The house is on a road that sees less than 1 car an hour and is 1 km from the village of Valmascle, which has just a few houses. The village of Cabrieres is 5 km away. It has a restaurant, small store, and winery. Supermarkets, banks, outdoor markets, restaurants, etc. are in Clermont l'Herault and Bedarieux, each a drive of 15-20 minutes.
Guests will need a car.
