About this listing
The house gets village water but is off the grid. Solar panels and deep cycle batteries provide lighting, and a 150-W inverter, which can be run from the batteries or your car's 12-V receptacle, is handy for recharging electronic devices. A quiet, efficient -V generator, kept in a shed but with outlets inside the house, can run small appliances (eg, hair dryer) and charge electronic devices. Guests furnish their own gasoline for the generator. All the rooms have electric lighting (halogen in the kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedrooms), and there are plenty of oil lanterns and candles. The kitchen has a gas refrigerator and gas oven and stove with 4 burners. The bedrooms, bathroom, and living room have gas radiators, all of which vent to the outside. For the large stone fireplace, there is unlimited seasoned firewood stacked behind the house. The 18-inch walls and marble floor downstairs keep the house cool in the hot Languedoc summer.
One bedroom has a single bed. The other two bedrooms each have a double bed: the house sleeps 5.
This house is not for everyone: no TV, no swimming pool, no dishwasher. But it offers the experience--unusual for village-oriented France--of a modest stone house in the middle of the countryside.
