My girlfriend and I stayed with Massimo for five nights while we explored Pisa and the surrounding area. His house is in a very beautiful area, though it does sit right on a fairly busy road. Massimo lent us servicable bikes which were very handy (for a 50 euro deposit). My girlfriend speaks fluent Italian and I have a little, so communication was not a problem.
However, in some ways Massimo was not very welcoming. At best, he is a grumpy old communist who is fed up with the world. At worst, he was actively patronising and rude to us. For example, on our first night we asked to borrow some olive oil - he told us to stop being greedy and go to the shop (which was shut). Why do that? We literally needed a dash of oil. Furthermore, on another day one of his many cats unfortunately crapped in our room (joy). Massimo was out (and had been for some time), so I cleaned it up. When we mentioned this to him he made out it was our fault and not his problem. Well, sorry comrade, we coughed up £150 for you, so it kinda is.
We don't use airbnb expecting or wanting hotels and were fine with his occasionally less than clean house and happy to rub along with his general cynicism. But mean spiritedness and cat poo is really not fair, and I wouldn't stay here again.
All was as in the description, beautiful area, easy to get know the region of Tuscany. Thanks to the bicycles we could travel around and we could get very easy to the center of Pisa (along an aqueduct! :)). Massimo is very helpful, thanks for everything! :)
Massimo is very good-natured!
The location itself is a bit far away from the city centre, bus stops are also quite far. However, Pisa is very bike-friendly city and Massimo has bikes.
Massimo is a very nice, helpful and kind person. We felt taken care of. One night he coocked the most delicious dish we've eaten during our stay in Pisa. He also recommended us a bike trip towards Lukka, Asciano and Calci (which is totally worth of taking). The room we lived in was clean and spacious. Bedding was freshly changed as we arrived. We have no objections for the bathroom as well.
Cons - If you're not a cat person (which - for the record - we totally are! ) you might not like the place because there are at least two lovely cats rubbing against your legs :) .
The road you'll have to take to get to center of Pisa is quite busy indeed. We came up with another - safer solution, but if you'll be getting back late, you could use some bike lights (because there are none). Here's the route we came up with (to campo dei miracoli, but to city center as well): (website hidden) . Also (it has been pointed out by other person in commentaries) the kitchen cleanliness could be a bit improved. And for those who like to stay in touch with the world while being on holiday - Wifi connection for mobile phones is quite weak (connection in the bedroom is practically non-existent).
A few things to note about this place: you will have to bike ride 4km to get to the city or walk 1km on a dangerous road to the closest bus stop. If you are allergic to cats or dust do not come here. There are a lot of flies and Mosquitos because it is close to the water. The place is a grubby but otherwise nice. The backyard and view is gorgeous. The room is nice though don't forget your own towel. Massimo was helpful on his days off to pick us up from the airport and take us to the city. It was nice to stay a little out of the city but not so easy to get around.
