Welcome to your Bohemian paradise in the middle of Manhattan’s historic Harlem district, home to some of the city’s best music, culture, and dining. Set in a converted church, every lavishly oversized yet playful room bursting with flashes of art and character, this 4 bedroom is spectacular and truly unique. There are countless hidden secrets and private nooks for you to discover and escape to. With included, but optional maid service, you won't want for anything.

Prepare to be enchanted!

The space
You’ll need a lifetime to explore every corner of this most grandiose of spaces and unearth all of its worldly treasures. To call it one of a kind somehow feels like an understatement, and to call it windingly oversized would be stating the blindingly obvious.

Gaze in wonder as you make your way into the 24’ high Great Room, festooned with a menagerie of international artifacts and antiques; Lush Indian fabrics, colorful Moroccan carpets and West-African wall hangings, French monasterial banquet table imploring a feast to be laid out, grand piano begging to be played. The open gallery and dining areas with plentiful seating and rich decor invite you to sit, suspend time, and enjoy whomever's company you keep. And the modern touches such as projector, soundboard and electronic light console let you sculpt the space any which way you’d like.

At the rear lies the caterer’s dream of a kitchen. 100% brushed stainless steel for a rustic/industrial look, a restaurant’s worth of pots, pans, dinner and glassware, and fully updated and top end appliances to make hosting a treat. The professional 6’ stove offers a huge grill that will breeze through a breakfast for 10, two extra wide convection ovens and a giant hood to crown it off and make cooking for any number on any occasion an absolute pleasure. Amongst the countless other features are the juicer, Vitamix, Cuisinart Robot, milk frother and coffee maker for the barista in you, and handsome tea-pot collection for high tea or just a relaxing cuppa.

At the other end of the room you’ll find the door to the exquisite zen garden, bursting to full bloom with biodiversity. From the world-champion roses fragrantly framing the Chinese gazebo, to the fern collection, the crawling wisteria casting its shade over the grand banquet table, Cherry-willow, Japanese Maple, English Ivy, the sugar-sweet Honeysuckle arches and much more waiting to be discovered along the staggered bluestone paths and bridge. Come have a seat in the herb garden or on one of the several benches for an afternoon chat or to whistle the breeze away.

Mosey back into the living space with rosemary sprig and coffee mug in hand, look up and you’ll see the stunning 50’ gallery that surrounds the room, with a queen sized sun-flushed bedroom overlooking the garden, seating and incredible original features such as the 11’ high pier mirror. Here is where you really can appreciate the house’s ecclesiastic history. The sweeping space and its elegant form truly is a spectacle, and a great area to relax, entertain, or sit with your thoughts.

Head up the grand staircases on either side of you, past the mezzanine and and you’ll arrive at the sprawling 3rd floor, dominated by the 2000 square foot master bedroom. Admire the 13’ original beamed ceilings, shiatsu massage table, dreamy hammock, and tons of original features and quirks like galvanized metal fireplace that demands your attention, 6 skylights and 8 huge windows to illuminate even the foggiest of mornings as you wake in your empire-age south asian king-sized canopy bed.

Surrounding the bedroom are the utopian master bathroom complete with full steam room, chromotherapy and aromatherapy massage table and extravagant original claw-foot tub, and two separate powder rooms for that extra private pamper, each with skylight and rich decor.

Finally we have the expansive garden-level English basement, la “demi-sous-sol”. Taking inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights and the Islamic Golden Age, the space is tailor-made for comfort and company. Let one of your Forty Thieves catch forty winks in one of the three queen sized sleeping areas, have a drink or a game of cards round the beautiful round table, or sit and get lost in Wonderland in the colorfully upholstered seating areas with luxuriant hookah pipe.

Discover the quiet and irresistible charm of Hamilton Heights, in a one of a kind setting that will be impossible to forget, as we transcend time and take you on a trip round the world, or at least the diverse and extravagant world inside the four walls of your new Harlem home.

Guest access
You will have access to the entire building with the exception of the eastern part of the basement, the office on the mezzanine floor and one room on the top floor. The laundry room is open but you might want to speak with our maid for laundry.

Location

New York, United States

New York’s iconic Harlem district is awash with culture and charm and can claim to be one of the city’s most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods. With a great balance between old New York authenticity and character and ever-changing modernity and contemporary art hubs, along with great walkability, there is plenty to do and see without venturing too far into the melee. There are a hatful of bars and restaurants just a few blocks walk away, such as gastropub The Grange for craft cocktails and classic farm-to-table American cooking, charming neighborhood bistro Trufo for Italian comfort food or Japanese seafood spot and raw bar ROKC for the best oysters in town.

Two block’s walk will take you to Nearby St Nicholas or Riverbank State Parks for stunning views overlooking Manhattan and of the Hudson River, you’ll be a spoke away from several Citibike locations should you want to take an invigorating morning ride down the Hudson River Greenway, and just a short trip North is the historic Fort Washington Park boasting Manhattan’s only lighthouse and the most spectacular views of the New Jersey Palisades and the George Washington Bridge.

Harlem’s shining light though is it’s musical history having been home to iconic venues such as the Apollo theatre and an untold number of jazz clubs both renowned and hidden away. One of the longest standing is Ginny’s supper club downstairs at famed soul food restaurant The Red Rooster, or you can swing by and check out a show at Harlem Stage or bustling multicultural music and art space Shrine.

You’ll no doubt fall in love with Harlem, all of its integrity and beauty, it’s never stagnant and ever wily finger on New York’s cultural pulse, and the connectivity and ease of traverse that it’s retained over the decades.

During your stay
I will be traveling, so have asked a fellow airbnb host to look after my guests while I am away. I'd prefer we keep messaging here for now, but I'll provide her contact information with your check-in details.

She and her team are familiar with my home and can offer great advice on the city. Should you have any questions during your stay, please feel free to ask away!

Our butler, Albert, works from 11-4 Monday - Friday. He will be available during your stay but may not always clean the bedrooms or bathrooms. In particular, if the bedroom doors are left closed he will not enter. If you'd absolutely like a clean, just let me know and I'll make sure he tidies up. Please expect to see him in the common areas. If there are days or times you’d prefer he not enter, just let us know!

We also have a janitor, Walter, he is doing general maintenance and shovel the snow and takes care of the garden. He will not be in the common spaces except for the front of the house, the garden, and the east part of the basement, all separate from any space you will use.
