Getting from San Jose to Cartago / Paraíso…
From San Jose you have 2 options. You can:
1) Take a bus from San Jose to Paraíso, and then from Paraíso you can take a taxi directly to us. The bus from San Jose to Paraíso runs every hour from downtown San Jose (across from the Plaza de la Democracia in Av. Central and Calle 15) and goes through San Pedro to Cartago and then to Paraíso. This bus does NOT run on Sundays.
2) Take a bus to Cartago (Lumaca bus station located in Calle 5 and Av. 10), and then take a bus to Cachi. The bus to Cachi passes nearby our street.
***There are also buses that run from Cartago to Paraiso frequently. You could also take a bus from Cartago to Paraiso and then take a taxi from Paraiso following the “Getting from Paraiso to El Salto Inn…“ directions below.
Get off the bus at the second major stop in town, next to the Iglesia de los Padres Capuchinos, walk to the end of the block and turn LEFT for the bus stop to Cachi. Tell the bus driver, “El Salto de la Novia Cascada.”
Getting from Paraiso to El Salto Inn…
Whether you are on the bus from Cartago riding through Paraiso on to El Salto Inn, or if you are directing a taxi driver from Paraiso to El Salto Inn, the directions and things to look out for are the same.
If you are in a taxi, start by telling the driver “El Salto de la Novia Cascada, abajo de Mirador Ujarras” (Ujarras is pronounced OO-HA-RAS). Whether you are on a bus or in a taxi, about 10 minutes after leaving Paraiso on your right hand side you will see the Mirador Ujarras, a lookout point/ national park with a restaurant on one side and a hill with picnic benches on the other. About 100 metres after you will see 2 houses on the right side again, one yellow and one pink (with Egyptian decorations and pharoh figures on the gate). About 45 seconds later you will see a lesser maintained road on the right hand side. If you are the bus you will pull the string and get off here and continue on foot. Turn right onto this road (or tell your taxi driver, “Ir a la derecha” and continue down about 200 metres to the bottom. On your right side again you will see a dirt mound/partial roadblock with a “Brewha” sign in it, turn right again. The house is located on this road about 350 metres further. We are the first and only white gate on your left. Continue down the driveway on foot to find the house.
Other Things to Note
Beautiful staring nights in one of our terrace beside a warm bonfire, sharing with other guests stories about trips, places to vistit and adventures, listening to music, playing games or having dinner.
Everyone deserve respect, we all are humans.
El Salto Inn is a simple, personal and cosy place. It is a little bit like getting into somebody’s private home. The view and the location is absolutely stunning and it is a good place to have your “base camp” when you visit the beautiful Orosi Valley.
Manuel is a happy host and a kitchen enthusiast; brewing his own beer and cooking meals that wont leave you hungry. He is also a terrific guide and helped us to get the most of our stay in Orosi. He can guide you to which hot springs that are the best and which horseback riding tours that gives you most bang for the buck and so on.
I can recommend El Salto Inn if you like the simple, rustic and personal rather than the fancy and correct.
Nice view, warm welcome and very good breakfast. We had a nice stay at the El Salto Inn. Thank you!
We had a short stay at El Salto Inn, just 2 nights. We actually got a free upgrade to the family room, because they were fully booked. No problem at all, because the view from that room on the waterfall was great!
The place was as described, although we did find the room a bit chilly and drafty. The windows and patiodoor didn't close well and with all the rain in the days we were there, the room felt a bit moist. We did spot some tiny ants in the bedroom and bathroom, so it could have been cleaner.
El Salto Inn is a good place to meet other travellers, from all over the world. But you can totally do your own thing if you want too, nobody expects you to act social if you don't feel like it. The host (Manuel) was really friendly and fun, he makes a good dinner and great pancakes for breakfast! :)
There are lots of things in the area you can do/visit. We drove up to Irazu volcano, which is quite close. The Orosi valley is perfect for a little drive-around too. For us, it was a good stop in between the Pacific&Carribean coast.
I personally would prefer a basic room at El Salto Inn any time to a four star hotel. The view from our room was just breathtaking. Perfect place to watch an early sunrise from your bed because of european jetlag. It was such a relaxed Place. Beautiful common rooms, Manuel served us very tasty Breakfast and gave us loads of useful information. Great for Birdwatching too. Thanks Manuel - still traveling through Cousta Rica and missing your place.
We rented this room from Dec. 20, 2014 to Jan 7, 2015 and absolutely loved this place for many reasons! We are a married couple average age 59, from Maine, and have traveled extensively. First of all the location is absolutely beautiful, prettier even than in the photos. The hosts Manuel and Christophe made us feel very welcome. The atmosphere was relaxed and family like. There were tons of things to do in the area, much more than we expected. We had just finished a wonderful two week tour with Overseas Adventure Travel and wanted to have an additional week on our own to simply chill out and get a more local perspective. We didn't get bored, not even for a moment. Every day was a new adventure and it was so nice to come back each afternoon to a relaxed and homey atmosphere where the people (hosts and clients alike) were all nice, the view was breathtaking, the rooms clean and comfortable, and very importantly for us, the only sounds were created by nature.
We could write a book about all the fun things we did, the places we explored, the people we met but there is not room here. The one thing you do not want to miss is the hike to the waterfall with Manuel. That was a highlight of our trip. As wonderful as this place was for us, it would not be for everyone. If you have any physical handicaps, expect luxury, or US style plumbing, this may not be the place for you. The walk down the driveway is very, very steep and it can be slippery as it rains a lot. Consult the rainfall map of Costa Rica and the altitude before deciding what to pack. We had the right clothes and were prepared to be outside most of the time in all weather. We also had flashlights/headlamps which we needed to get to our room after having dinner in the main gathering area. That is pretty standard, even in the three star hotels. We should have also brought a magnifying glass for reading small print as our eyes do not adjust like they used to. It was nice to have our I pad because the internet service was better than expected, even better than at the more expensive hotels. It isn't lightening fast though and at times was not available.
We didn't have a car but I think we saw more than most people because of it. We took public buses and hiked a lot. The little bit of Spanish we knew came in very handy and it enabled us to meet many locals. Some clients brought young children and Christophe's beautiful little family lives there but you should know it is not child proof. Plan to carefully supervise your children on the terrace. We would love to go back and rent the whole place with family and friends. It is a very convenient place to San Jose.
The host, Manuel, was awesome- great chef, entertainer, and genuine. Very helpful and personable. Breakfasts were amazing! The views and waterfalls were gorgeous - and the hike to the falls was fun!
Hot springs are not on grounds and are not walking distance.
This was especially disappointing as we used public transport.
Also the hot tub was not working during our stay.
Overall a good place to relax.
Manuel was a great host and chef!not easy to find but the location is unbeatable with the waterfall across the valley and Manuel has great directions to get here in the website . If you like a peaceful yet charming place close to nature, this is it!
