Carpenter's Cottage is a comfortable self catering holiday home amongst the former farm buildings of Le Clos du Verger, 5 mins from Bergerac. Sleeping 3, there is also space for an extra single bed or cot. Wood fire, cottage charm, enclosed garden.
Chez le Charpentier, Carpenter's cottage - because the carpenter really did once live here with his little family.
Le Clos du Verger is a rural site a few kilometres from Bergerac with a hectare of land dropping gently down to a small stream. There is a variety of trees, including about 30 fruit and walnut trees. Abandoned for 30 years, the former farm is now springing back to new life as the restored buildings welcome visitors from around the world into their comfortable, practical and stylish country interiors.
Approach the cottage across the garden terrace and through French windows into the main room of this pretty property with its original fireplace used by the carpenter and his family. At one end there is good seating round the hearth and TV, with dining area to one side. At the far end is the well equipped kitchen.
Heating is by woodburning stove (wood provided) and underfloor heating from our geothermal heating installation, according to season.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms (each 11 - 12 sq m), one with a wide double bed, the other with a single. Comfortable mattresses, good clothes storage, and space in the single room for an extra bed or cot.
The bathroom is also upstairs. It has a shower over the bath, washbasin unit, and WC.
Outside the cottage has its own enclosed garden, including the terrace furnished for outside living in the summer, and an attractive dining pergola.
1. The stairs are a french standard but may be considered steep by some people.
2. The cottage is part of the side wing of the main house.
3. Kitchen includes microwave, dishwasher, electric oven/grill and hob, fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster, food processor.

Bergerac airport is 20 minutes away. We can collect you from the airport or from the train station.
You will need a car or bikes for your stay. We can recommend good bike hire packages that are delivered to our site.

We had a fantastic time at le Clos du Verger during our 1 month stay. The apartment was very good, with a good range of kitchenware, a few movies and good wifi. The property suited us - a few goats, a fantastic fig tree (we ate our body weight in figs), a pleasant local neighbourhood. We were there in summer & it was lovely laying down reading a book under the trees at the back of the property during a hot summer day, then moving to the shade of the fig tree in the late afternoon & finally aperitifs & dinner in the gazebo as the day fades to night. So relaxing!
We are runners and wanted to keep training while we are there - we found a number of good running options, trail & road. GPS not always accurate but the views are just as spectacular, even if you are lost.
We got caught a few times with the closing hours of restaurants and tourist attractions so if you are only going for a short stay, pay close attention to these or you'll miss out!
Jane and Martin were great hosts. Always ready for travel advice or general assistance if you wanted it. We became good friends over the month and would
love to return.

I am delighted to be living near Bergerac in France and to have slotted happily into life in our little community. My husband Martin is a retired builder, We celebrated our arrival in France by getting married here! This place was derelict and beginning to fall down when we purchased it, but now our French neighbours are pleased that we have breathed new life into it, and it has become a place of wonderful international get togethers. We are proud of this lovely part of France and also have a little retreat in Norfolk, England. I hope you will enjoy staying in either location as much as we do.
