About this listing
West facing room (great for sunsets) in an artist's house. The room looks out over gardens and across rooftops to the church and distant fields. During July-September there also another room overlooking a quiet road which gets the morning light.
Quiet room in glass sculptor's house. The house is up on a hill and so the room is not only quiet but has a lovely view over the village and across to fields in the distance.
Guests will have access to the living room, kitchen, garden and a shared bathroom. (extra toilet downstairs).
Interaction with Guests
Guests will have as much or as little interaction with the host as they want.
Wivenhoe is a picturesque, lively village and very convenient for Essex University. My house is quite central, in a quiet, friendly street, 7 minutes walk from the bus stop and 10 minutes walk from the station. The university is 40 minutes walk along the road or riverside or 10 minutes on the bus. Many academics live here, as well as many artists, poets and fishermen. There are 12,000 inhabitants, 60-70 societies, 5 pubs, several restaurants, and a good Co-Op. A 'hidden gem', it has been called 'The Hampstead of Essex'. It is near to the coast and the wilds of Suffolk but is also on a direct train line to London (1hr 10mins).
There's a train that goes direct to London (1 hour, 10 minutes) in one direction and 15 minutes to the coast in the other. From my house the station is 10 minutes walk and the bus stops outside the Co-Op is 7 minutes walk.
Other Things to Note
I am a working artist and have my studio in the garden. People sometimes like to be given a tour of the studio which is on stilts and houses a large kiln.
No smoking and no pets, please. I'm happy for you to use the microwave in the kitchen and can offer limited space in the fridge.
If you are staying on a Sunday night, departing the room before 9.00 am on the Monday would much be appreciated as I use the room for something else on Mondays mornings. If you will be continuing to stay beyond Monday morning, I would, of course, put everything back just as you left it and would not need to disturb you for the rest of your stay.
Traveling academic from Florida, and I can say that Caroline was an absolutely wonderful host--really top notch! This is an example of how to do it right. I really wish I could have stayed longer. She is friendly, interesting to talk with, has in-depth knowledge of the surrounding village of Wivenhoe, and--most importantly--made me feel comfortable and welcomed. The room is clean, well kept, and has a great view of her garden and studio (do ask her about her art, it is really impressive). She offers breakfast in the morning and encourages you to make yourself at home. Her home is conveniently located where everything in the village, including the University is within an easy walk. Highly recommended--will be back next year to stay with her.
A really homely house in a quiet residential area. A very warm welcome awaited me from a lovely host. Caroline is very friendly and interesting and a pleasure to meet and chat to. The room was perfect and the facilities more than acceptable. I was very pleased to stay with Caroline and would highly recommend her listing.
Caroline is a very welcoming and attentive host, who is very easy to talk to. The room is very clean and tidy with a comfortable bed. The shower is great. I would have no hesitation in staying there again and would recommend it to others.
Caroline is a lovely host, the room is nice and in quiet area. Caroline's passion for art and beautiful things is contagious.
Caroline was very welcoming and helpful. My mother, for whom I booked this, had a wonderful time, and would definitely come back and recommend it.
Caroline was a lovely host. Very welcoming and an interesting lady to talk to over the breakfast table re her art and travels.
I know Wivenhoe as have visited many times before, it's a beautiful place and would recommend it to anyone wanting to experience Essex at its finest.

About the Host, Caroline
I'm an artist working in glass. My house and garden are filled with my creations and experiments. I also exhibit. I make everything from jewellery to sculpture, with lots of different things in between. I love being creative and/or busy. I also love meeting and being around people and welcoming them into my home. In my spare time I help out with the village cinema and ferry and also started a walking group which has now evolved into evenings sharing food and watching DVDs together as well. In the 1960's I hitch-hiked around the Middle-East for two years, and I still backpack to exotic places whenever time and money allow. Favourite places so far: India, Ladakh, Nepal, Morocco, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Cuba, ...... and I always prefer to stay with a family or in a back-street inn rather than a smart hotel. I like 'world' and 'classical' music and lots of different types of food. Favourite book of all time: 'Siddhartha' by Herman Hesse. As a guest, I hope I'm sensitive to other people's cultures and environment. As a host, I hope I'm friendly, relaxed and welcoming but also able to leave people in peace, as appropriate.
