Our host made us feel very welcome and was very helpful. We had a beautiful room (very nice to have a kettle and tea in our room - most unusual for France!).

Originally from the UK, and having spent much of my youth in southern Africa, I've lived here in the heart of the Dordogne for over 8 years now. When I bought the Chateau du Bourbet, I always dreamed of sharing its history and beautiful surroundings with other people. The idea of 'affordable luxury' is one that has always been important to me, so with that in mind I decided to open the Chateau as a B&B. We offer what one of our guests recently described as a "home away from home... but bigger!"

An hour from Bergerac, about two hours from Bordeaux and Sarlat, this is the foodie capital of France, home of the fat duck and the 'black diamond' ~ the Perigord truffle. Oh, and then of course there's the wine...

This part of rural France is also perfect for walkers & ramblers, cyclists (we can lend you a bicycle!), artists, photographers... or you can simply explore the region by car. If you prefer to get around on horseback, there's an excellent riding school and stables nearby.

Brantome, the ‘Venice of the Périgord’, is just 20 mins drive away, on the banks of the Dronne. A lovely picturesque town with independent shops, superb restaurants and loads of riverside cafés. Guided boat trips run hourly during the summer months and Friday night is the weekly ‘river joust’ ... great fun to watch! Over the border in the Charente is Aubeterre, famous for its monolithic underground church. The tree-lined town square is full of cafés and quirky shops, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. There's also a good 9-hole golf course nearby.

In summer, the Grand Etang at La Jemaye is a must : a sheltered lake (with lifeguard) on a lovely sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. Other attractions include an adventure playground, fishing area, restaurant, snack bar and graded fitness trails.

The fabulous roman town of St Emilion is a must for wine enthusiasts and gourmets ; in season, you can book a guided wine-tasting tour departing from the Château! Alternatively, if you prefer brandy, the town of Cognac is just an hour away ~ and the chais of Rémy Martin, Hennessy, Courvoisier and Martell all offer guided tours which can be booked direct, online.

The historic cities of Périgueux and Angoûleme are both about 45 mins drive. Périgueux, the ‘capital’ of the Dordogne dominated by the magnificent Cathedrale de St Front, offers hidden delights within its winding, cobbled streets. Angoûleme is an ancient fortified town, and the world cartoon capital. In September the walled streets are closed for the Circuit des Remparts, the annual vintage car race. It offers some of the best shopping around, and is also the closest TGV link to Paris (approx 2h) and the Eurostar to London (approx 6h). The Chateau is just over an hour's drive from Bergerac Airport (Ryanair flights from the UK) and about an hour and a half from Bordeaux Airport (international flights from all over the world). You can rent a car at any of these locations ~ or we'll be happy to come and collect you, for a small fee to cover time and fuel.

The Chateau du Bourbet dates back to the time of the Knights Templar and for centuries was the home of the Lageard family, hereditary seneschals of Angoulême for nearly 250 years and counsels to the kings of France. Royal connections at the Chateau du Bourbet reached a high point on 14 May 1514, when Claude de Lageard, daughter of the then seneschal Helie de Lageard, was given in marriage to the then comte d'Angoulême, who would later become François 1er. Of course, the Chateau has changed a little since then, but just think ~ stay with us, and you could be walking in the footsteps of a Queen of France!

We're fairly new to AirBnB, but the Chateau has been open to guests for a few months now. For more information, please check out our ratings and reviews on TripAdvisor.
