About this listing
Enjoy this large, inviting room with private bath, located on a quiet residential street, and close to restaurants, cafes. Our guests love the warmth of the room and large bathroom.
This is the front of our house. The view is a bit old, as we've replaced the old red front doors from brand new, energy efficient ones.
Perfect combination of central location and quiet seclusion near the intersection of 11th and Otis. Spend your day down town sightseeing or on business and return in the evening to a thriving neighborhood and a warm, welcoming private room and private bath. Your bedroom has lots of closet and drawer space for your things, a queen bed, television, small desk--and overlooks the street we live on. Come downstairs to the screened porch for sipping wine you purchased at the local wine store. Located on a quiet, one-way street, our large, fully renovated row house is just two blocks to the bustling, high-quality restaurants, bars and cafes of 11th and 14th Streets. Two blocks more and you're at shopping, restaurants, cafes, banks, Saturday farmer's market, urban mall (with Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond and more) and Metro station of Columbia Heights. Three blocks in the other direction are the Georgia Avenue Metro station and more restaurants. Your hosts are an American who works in international development and an architect from Mexico.
If you are looking for a longer stay, consider the one-bedroom basement apartment (with private entrance in the same house) that we also list on airbnb. Or check out our third listing, the suite at the back of the house with a double bed and separate office/coffee room.
We are eager to share advice about things to see and places to go, and we provide our own map of the neighborhood and beyond pointing out our favorite restaurants, shops and more. For more on our neighborhood (website hidden) "New Columbia Heights" blog. Just ask.
All public areas of the house except the kitchen. The back porch and garden are favorites of our guests during the warmer months. Cable tv and wifi are also available. Please note that, beginning July 2014, we are rarely booking both our airbnb guest rooms at the same time: most guests will be our only guests at the time of your stay, with few exceptions.
Interaction with Guests
Regarding interaction, we take our cues from our guests. Some prefer their privacy and stay to their rooms, while others reach out to chat, go out to dinner at a local restaurant or share a glass of wine at the house. We also enjoy sharing our knowledge of the local community and DC. Just ask!
Our house is between two Metro stops and close to several bus lines. By Metro you're 15 minutes to China Town and the convention center, 20 minutes to the Smithsonian museums, 25 minutes to the White House. Many buses are also available close-by, or take advantage of Capital Bikeshare. You can plan your trips by going to the trip planner feature of the DC Metro website.
Other Things to Note
Because we work office jobs and go to bed early, check-in is between 5:00 (17:00) and 9:00 (21:00) weekdays. Early (but not late) check-in is available weekends.
Please check out the amenities tab for more information. Strike-through amenities are not available.
Just be courteous, and keep the noise down after we've gone to bed. We tend to go to bed early, especially work days, as we're up early in the morning.
You'll have access to cable television and wifi, and your closet has plenty of room to hang clothes or store on shelves and in drawers.
Their place was really, really nice and definitely as advertised. The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable. The private bathroom was also spacious and clean. Their house overall was also very gorgeous with a great backyard area you can relax in. The location was great as you're only less than 10 minutes away by foot from a green line metro station, and about 5 minutes away from some of the best eating places around 11th and 14th streets. The neighborhood in general was also very quiet at night and in the morning--which made me sleep better. Jay and Mau were also very good hosts and easy to communicate with. They were also kind enough to give suggestions about the best local places to eat and how to get around. Overall, I highly recommend staying at their place if you're visiting DC!
My trip to DC was my first Airbnb experience and I will use them again. My hosts sent a welcome guide with great information not only on the room but the neighborhood and beyond. I printed it off and often carried it with me as I moved through the city. The Columbia Heights neighborhood was cute, safe, and most things were within a short walk. I used the 2 metro stops near by but usually went to the one at Columbia Heights most often. There was a farmers market on Saturday there too. The restaurants were mostly local places but there were chains like Target, CVS close by if needing any necessities. The room and connected bath were clean, large, and included everything I needed for staying a week, except for a fridge (no leftovers or drinks brought home) which was the only issue but I knew that going into booking. They provided a water container and refilled it whenever I needed which came in quite handy as I brought a water bottle to take with every day as I left on my travels. The host (Jay only as Mau was away) was extremely nice and always asked about my day and provided help when needed. I was given privacy and felt respected the whole time. I would highly recommend them to anyone and would book with them again if I visit DC.
Jay and Mau are excellent hosts. This is the second time I've stayed at their home and I've had a great time. The room is clean, the neighbourhoud is beautiful and with the directions of Jay and Mau you don't have to spend a lot of money, because they give you a lot of tips to save money. I would recommened them to everyone!
Jay et Mau sont très accueillants et ont tout fait pour que nous nous sentions les bienvenus et ayons tous les renseignements utiles pour le séjour. Le logement est très agréable et confortable avec des commodités de grande qualité dans un quartier calme et bien situé.
I had a great time! Jay and Mau are incredibly hospitable and professional which made for an enjoyable experience. The suite is beautiful and just like the pictures.
This accommodation and the hosts were great! I would say that everything was described very accurately, both on the Airbnb website and in the more detailed guide that Jay and Mau provided after we booked. I don't know if all hosts send an info packet or guide in advance, but it was very helpful because it introduced us to the neighborhood as well as gave useful info about the downtown attractions. The bedroom, bathroom, and entire house were immaculate and anything you might need was within about a 10 min walk. Also, the neighborhood was especially cool, and people were extremely friendly and helpful! The latter point was true of everywhere we went in DC! I can't think of any negative points!
We had a wonderful experience staying at Jay and Mau's home. They gave us a warm and friendly welcome and tour explaining everything about our stay providing a written guide to the Columbia Heights area, and beyond, that we found very helpful. The private room and bathroom could not have been nicer and more pleasant. They provided so many extras! The back screened in porch and garden are great places to sit and relax. The location was very good as it was close to family that we were visiting and we walked back and forth from place to place many times. We enjoyed the neighborhood and all it has to offer. We look forward to staying at Jay and Mau's home again.

About the Host, Jay And Mau
Jay (on the right) is from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and works in international public health. Mauricio is from Mexico City and is an architect. We have lived in the vibrant Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC since we bought our 100-year-old row house in 2007. After a great experience renting our guest room on airbnb in 2012, we decided to list our basement apartment as well in 2013, and then our second guest room in 2014. But our first experience with airbnb was as guests when we rented a flat in the center of Paris, and we've stayed with airbnb hosts in Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United States. We love movies and traveling, and between the two of us have been to more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
