Enjoy this large, inviting room with private bath, located on a quiet residential street, and close to restaurants, cafes. Our guests love the warmth of the room and large bathroom. Your hosts have been named airbnb "super hosts." Thanks airbnb!
This is the front of our house. The view is a bit old, as we've replaced the old red front doors from brand new, energy efficient ones.
Perfect combination of central location and quiet seclusion near the intersection of 11th and Otis. Spend your day down town sightseeing or on business and return in the evening to a thriving neighborhood and a warm, welcoming private room and private bath. Your bedroom has lots of closet and drawer space for your things, a queen bed, television, small desk--and overlooks the street we live on. Come downstairs to the screened porch for sipping wine you purchased at the local wine store. Located on a quiet, one-way street, our large, fully renovated row house is just two blocks to the bustling, high-quality restaurants, bars and cafes of 11th and 14th Streets. Two blocks more and you're at shopping, restaurants, cafes, banks, Saturday farmer's market, urban mall (with Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond and more) and Metro station of Columbia Heights. Three blocks in the other direction are the Georgia Avenue Metro station and more restaurants. Your hosts are an American who works in international development and an architect from Mexico.
If you are looking for a longer stay, consider the one-bedroom basement apartment (with private entrance in the same house) that we also list on airbnb. Or check out our third listing, the suite at the back of the house with a double bed and separate office/coffee room.
We are eager to share advice about things to see and places to go, and we provide our own map of the neighborhood and beyond pointing out our favorite restaurants, shops and more. For more on our neighborhood (website hidden) "New Columbia Heights" blog. Just ask.
All public areas of the house except the kitchen. The back porch and garden are favorites of our guests during the warmer months. Cable tv and wifi are also available. Please note that, beginning July 2014, we are rarely booking both our airbnb guest rooms at the same time: most guests will be our only guests at the time of your stay, with few exceptions.
Interaction with Guests
Regarding interaction, we take our cues from our guests. Some prefer their privacy and stay to their rooms, while others reach out to chat, go out to dinner at a local restaurant or share a glass of wine at the house. We also enjoy sharing our knowledge of the local community and DC. Just ask!
Our house is between two Metro stops and close to several bus lines. By Metro you're 15 minutes to China Town and the convention center, 20 minutes to the Smithsonian museums, 25 minutes to the White House. Many buses are also available close-by, or take advantage of Capital Bikeshare. You can plan your trips by going to the trip planner feature of the DC Metro website.
Other Things to Note
Check in is between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 pm weekdays, and flexible on weekends. We can arrange with a friend to meet you for early check-in; a $20 early check-in fee can be paid directly to him upon arrival to compensate him for his time and transportation. Because we are early to bed, we greatly prefer no check-ins after 9:00 pm.
Please check out the amenities tab for more information. Strike-through amenities are not available.
Just be courteous, and keep the noise down after we've gone to bed. We tend to go to bed early, especially work days, as we're up early in the morning.
Great room, great location, great hosts. The room is large, nicely decorated, with a nice size closet. Loved the bay window overlooking the street. The bathroom is larger than in most hotels. Very clean. Nice neighborhood close to metro, shopping, dining.
Jay greeted us and was most helpful explaining everything. Great experience. This was my first time staying at an airbnb and I will definitely recommend Jay and Mau's place to anyone visiting D.C.
really nice and helpful host! requested 20 bucks for earlier check in but overall it is a fantastic experience. Will recommend to other airbnbers. wifi not very stable.
Beautiful room, conveniently located three metrostops from convention center. Completely met expectations. Jay and Mau are very friendly and helpful, and they provide information on hidden gems among the restaurants in the neighbourhood.
I had a very nice stay at Jay and Mau's place. They are friendly and hospitable and gave me lots of good information about the area. Their house is lovely, and the room w/private bath was very comfortable, spacious, and clean. It's situated in a safe, lively neighborhood and is close to metro stops. Overall, highly recommended!
Very clean and comfortable, with nice amenities like shampoo, smart trip card, iron, hair dryer, and good internet. Hosts were very polite and accessible.
This is a great room in a very nice location, near shops and restaurants. It is close to a metro stop, yet far enough away from the center of town to feel quiet and more relaxing. The hosts were wonderful and very helpful accommodating my early arrival time. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to DC. Thanks for everything!
Words that come to mind when I think about Jay & Mau's place and my room: luxurious, comfortable, accessible, PERFECT. The place is exactly as described and pictured, so there are no complaints whatsoever.
Staying with Jay & Mauricio made my trip to DC, and they made me feel very welcome while allowing the space and privacy to do what I want and come and go as I please. I felt like I was at home, and I felt very comfortable the whole time I was there. They even provided a guide that was detailed and had a lot of good tips and recommendations for places to eat, areas to go, and to navigate DC with a local's insider knowledge.
On that note, J&M's place is in a really good part of town, and their street is safe and quiet (cicadas and crickets aside!). It's a 5-minute walk to the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro station, which puts you at a short 15-minute ride to downtown DC - in other words, you're away from all the action, but really close to it!
So would I stay here again? DEFINITELY, and I'm already trying to see when I can go back!

Jay (on the right) is from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and works in international public health. Mauricio is from Mexico City and is an architect. We have lived in the vibrant Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC since we bought our 100-year-old row house in 2007. After a great experience renting our guest room on airbnb in 2012, we decided to list our basement apartment as well in 2013, and then our second guest room in 2014. But our first experience with airbnb was as guests when we rented a flat in the center of Paris, and we've stayed with airbnb hosts in Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United States. We love movies and traveling, and between the two of us have been to more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
