  • My fiance and I loved staying at Barrie and Tod's house. We celebrated our engagement here and it was just what we wanted. The lake was beautiful, the canoe was fantastic, and the privacy was perfect - a very romantic place to stay. We really loved the fenced in yard/deck for our little doggie. We couldn't imagine that being any better. We hope to be back!!!

  • A favorite Airbnb stay. Beautiful house and location, view, seclusion, amenities, and friendly, helpful, thoughtful host in our interactions. Barrie and Tod have taken beautiful care of this home, and thoughtfully provided for a lovely stay. The deck was awesome, and I loved the blending of the indoor and outdoor space. Be aware that on a busy summer weekend it is like motorboat highway down on the lake through the afternoon, but morning and evening were peaceful and calm - great for a canoe paddle.

  • This is a stunningly beautiful house and location! On top of that, the owners are committed to green/eco living, and we enjoyed reading about their house and the various ways they're contributing to preserving the wondrous environment, especially around their place.

Highlights included the glass walls that fold back accordion style to completely open the house to the wrap-around deck high about the Rollins Reservoir and surrounded by tall pines/firs. Grilling dinner on the deck. Morning and evening drinks/ meals on the deck. Swimming in the reservoir. They have a canoe, but we didn't take it out. 30 minute drive to Nevada City and the S. Fork of the Yuba River for hiking and swimming in incredible natural pools. Comfy bed and couches, DVD player, beautiful shower.

They have a local maintenance man who was available to help with a minor problem with the grill, and any other questions we had. They also have a thorough guide book to the house and environs, loaded with helpful info.

Loved this place and would certainly consider going back. Seems like it would be lovely in any season, but was great in summer.

  • Had a really great stay at the Lotus Lake House. The house is beautifully designed with a lot of great details, and the stars at night from the deck (which is awesome) are amazing. The kitchen is well-equipped, and there's a canoe available to explore the lake if you're adventurous. Highly recommended if you're heading to the Grass Valley area.

  • Barrie and Tod have an incredible house with floor to ceiling views of majestic trees and the lake just a few steps away. Tod was a great remote host who checked in with me throughout the weekend to make sure everything was going smoothly! My dog had the best time running in their thoughtfully provided dog run and we had a lovely time hiking the trails together. We saw deer in abundance the whole weekend and an owl serenaded us at night. We were there for stormy weather - rain and snow, and nothing could have been more relaxing.
High points: they had a great dvd movie selection, the softest sheets and one of the more comfortable beds I've ever slept on! The kitchen is well appointed for real cooking - it was the most glamourous off the grid experience I have ever had! If you're bringing friends along they have two amazing leather couches that provide additional sleeping space - I can't wait to return for summer weather!

  • "Green" Off Grid Glass House is amazing! The house itself is an ideal place for us- glass walls to get you closer to nature, modern amenities with washer & dryer, & the surround sound while listening to music or watching movies is such a great addition! You won't miss any part of the movie even when you're in the bathroom. We love all the furniture, the comfortable bed, plenty of soft towels, plus bathrobes ( I've never seen my hubby in a bathrobe before :-). Additionally, because this place is a dog friendly house, Barrie & Tod left us with doggie toys, bed, and lots of towels/sheets to use for our two lovely dogs. And then there's the location, very quiet, serene, romantic, and private - no neighbors close by...we drove over seven hours from LA but we didn't care because the place/location is such a treat to be off the grid. We walked down to the lake but we didn't use the canoe available because it was a little too cold for us but maybe it's a good enough reason to return in the summer. If you're a runner like my hubby and I, they have a trail from the house to the lake which is very suitable for some speed training- I believe the trail was made to accomodate mountain bikers but we did enjoy it too! The big wooden deck has all the furnitures, gas grill, heat lamp that can be used if you would like to just chill on the deck watching the stars. We also asked for Chris' assistance to help us with the heater (caretaker of the house) and he was also such a nice fellow and very helpful. We will definitely return soon!!! Thanks Barrie & Tod!

  • Quite a majestic place. If you love design in any medium, you will without a doubt enjoy this fine piece of architecture, AND if you love the great outdoors, THIS is the place for you!

I had stayed here a total of 5 days, enjoyed serene views, canoed every single day, and disconnected from the 'world'. I can't say I've enjoyed a road trip so much, and I've been on quite a few. This one will stand out in my memory for a long time.

Barrie / Tod are also incredible hosts, they did everything to make our stay welcoming, icing on the cake. Will definitely be coming back here.

About
Our eco-friendly vacation home was a labor of love. We care deeply about the environment and are thrilled to have this unique off-grid retreat to escape to and to share with others. After a 2 year sabbatical living in Europe, doing volunteer work and taking art classes, Barrie has returned to the high tech Silicon Valley world. Tod has an off grid consulting business and a small manufacturing start up. We need your input to finalize the design for our own mountain biker course, right on our own property. if you are an expert mountain biker, please come visit and help us detail the course. We have room for one twisty downhill and one straight downhill of 25-30% grade, so speed and technical sections.
