Where you’ll be

Florence, Toscana, Italy

You are at the center of the civil and religious architectural works of Florence in the 15th and 16th centuries, which have contributed to the culture of Humanism and the Renaissance and to the history of architecture. In particular, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore, its Baptistery and its Giotto Bell Tower.
Leaving the apartment you are in front of the entrance of the long and winding path of steps leading to the top of what the Florentines call "il cupolone". La Cupola is one of the most majestic examples of domes in the world, a model of universal value of the possibilities of human genius.

The Dome is such a perfect building that one of the most important composers of music of the 1400s, the French - Flemish artist Guillame Dufay, has composed and played within the same dome a motet called "Nuper rosarum flores" whose musical relationships between the parts resume geometric proportions of the same building.

OTHER HISTORICAL BUILDINGS AND MUSEUMS - 10 minutes walk from the apartment
In the same street is also the Museum of the Academy (David of Michelangelo) and nearby the Museum of San Marco, the Chiostro dello Scalzo, the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Piazza SS. Annunziata. Remarkable is the New Museum of the Innocents and its superb "stenditoio" where in the past centuries the clothes of over a thousand orphans were laid out to dry. In the same place now you can enjoy a coffee with breathtaking views over the city's rooftops.
Also worth mentioning is the Public Library of the "Oblate", with its fantastic panoramic terrace where you can stop to enjoy an aperitif, always with a view of the Dome. Also in the area the headquarters of the Istituto Geografico Militare, which still today follows the creation of Italian cartography, and the Opificio delle Pietre dure, world excellence of artistic restore.

A five minute walk from the house is also the city's most important public hospital, Santa Maria Nuova, which is fully efficient with a modern first aid department but also has an interesting historical wing, recently restored. The original hospital building dates back to the thirteenth century.

Where to eat - The evening:
A place where you can eat Tuscan, well, where Florentines go but it is not far to walk from the center is "Trattoria Sabatino" in Via Pisana 2.
A restaurant in the center, certainly more known by tourists, but still guaranteed as a Tuscan and not as expensive as "Buca Lapi" or "Latini"? I recommend the restaurant "Del Fagioli" in Corso dei Tintori.

The lunch:
If you go to the Central Market (3 min away from home) you will find a lot of choice, even if it is very touristy. If you want to walk 10 minutes more, always just for lunch, I suggest you go to the market really frequented by the Florentines: the Sant'Ambrogio Market, where you can eat anything at any price. A fantastic place to eat a typical giant sandwich for less than € 5? The Brunori bakery in Borgo Pinti.

I was born and raised in Florence, in the historic center, in Via dei Tavolini, in the middle between the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. Where I played football was Piazza Signoria and it was perfectly normal for me and my friends to use the base of the statue with the horse as one of the two doors. The policemen tried to send us away, but we always came back, because that was our square where to play football and the base of the statue with the horse was our door. Only many years later I discovered that the knight was Cosimo the Grand Duke. But the square had become different since I was a child. Ho sempre lavorato a Firenze.

To best host my guests, I asked to help my wife Maria Luigia and my friend Adele, who are co-hosts of this listing. I was born and raised in the historical center of Florence. I live in Prato for a few years.
I still know authentic and particular places in the city that are not yet visited by mass tourism.

If you want to know Florence as you have ever seen it, book bikes and wake up at 6am. I will be happy to show you the amazing city that is still empty and is waking up.
To offer this tour to my guests I am on Airbnb experience from may 2020.
