About this listing

Abbeywood House provides comfort and atmosphere at the right price. 5 mins walk to town centre. Off street parking. Landscaped grounds . Choice of Double/Twin/Triple or Four bed rooms all with views over Croagh Patrick.

The space

Abbeywood was originally an old monastery and retains many of the original features such as stained glass windows and parquet floors throughout. Although only 5 mins walk to the town centre it is set back off the road in its own private grounds with plenty of off street parking. South westerly facing it is in an ideal location to relax outside with a glass of wine and watch the sunset over Croagh Patrick (cannot guarantee the weather however!). All our rooms have views over Croagh Patrick, we can offer a Double, Twin, Triple or Four bed room. Bed linen and towels are supplied and although not en-suite, all rooms have their own wash hand basin. Families are very welcome, the outside areas being particularly popular with lawns, swingball, boules, etc

Guest access

There is free Wifi throughout the building. A sitting room with books/TV/DVD player/board games/guitars is available for guests to relax in. A light continental breakfast with freshly brewed coffee will also be available here each morning. All guests are welcome to make use of the sitting room and gardens within the designated hours.

Interaction with guests

I'd be delighted to give guests the low down on the area and direct them towards places of interest, local events, best pubs etc for their tastes. We have a very informal atmosphere here and make every effort to ensure our guests enjoy their stay.

We loved this place, it was very central - 2 minutes walk into town. Susan was very helpful giving us tips on which restaurants and pubs to visit for touristy / local vibes. Accommodation had everything we need, and the lounge area (full of books / games) is great to chill out in. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Westport! Thank you Susan :)

Susan's place is very close to the main street on Westport. All the restaurants and pubs are close by. Sadly this place doenst have an en-suite. Though we had a room for ourselves, I felt it more like an hostel. However there was no shouting/screaming at night which is a regular sight in other hostels. And the bathrooms & toilets were clean enough. No hot food for breakfast but you can have bread, cerelas, fruits & tea/coffee/orange juice.

Response from Susan:
Unfortunately I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Vignesh as we were away for a few days. He is absolutely right none of our rooms are en-suite although they all have a wash hand basin. Although we mention this in our listing, we also message every guest after booking to highlight this fact in case they missed it and that we provide a continental breakfast with home made brown bread, cereal, fruit etc rather than a full cooked breakfast. This is why we charge only €60 per night for a Double room throughout the summer season , considerably less than other properties with en-suite rooms and a hot breakfast in such a central location. Glad to hear it was peaceful in our absence! As we live in the property with two small children we have zero tolerance for noise disturbance at night.

Susan is a very welcoming person. To be in an old abbey made it special. Very clean, generous breakfast. Close to downtown. Ideal place for a stay.

Hi there,
my name is Susan, originally from Dublin, I lived away in America and Australia for a number of years and I've been living in Westport on the west coast of Ireland since 2002 and couldn't imagine a better place to live. Fantastic scenery, beautiful beaches, surfing, hill walking, cycling, great pubs and restaurants. If I was going to be picky I might request a few more sunny days but as a wise man once said.."There's no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes" .
I've always loved travelling and having travelled solo quite a bit, I can appreciate the importance of a warm welcome after a long journey or a helping hand when things don't quite pan out as you planned and you're in a strange country.
I used to close up for January and February every year and take off myself, preferably somewhere with sun..South America and Asia in particular. Staying in hostels and other types of budget accommodation while away was great for seeing things from a guests point of view and also picking up ideas and tips for my own place.
Now I live here with my husband Guillaume and our two kids Charlie (4) and Sam (3) so my travelling is temporarily on hold.
I've been running Abbeywood since 2002 and have had a wide variety of guests of all nationalitys and ages through the doors since then, the youngest was 6 weeks old and the oldest 85. People are generally happy as they're on holidays and that atmosphere extends to the town itself, there's a very relaxed unhurried air about the place. if you're providing accommodation I think the most important thing is to have an interest in people, a genuine desire that they enjoy their stay and also to be aware of when people want to be left in peace to do their own thing or if they want to chat. I wouldn't say I have a life motto as such but I have a postcard with a Mark Twain quote on it that has come with me wherever I've lived for the last twenty years
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Hope to see you here in Westport at some stage:)
