Our house is a 1940s semi-detached building in a quiet residential area not far from the centre of Bath. We can offer one of our two sitting rooms which converts into a private bedroom. A sofa bed folds out to a king size comfortable double bed. All our bedding is made of 100% cotton and towels and hairdryer are provided. There is also a very small single bedroom (just space for sleeping in a full size single bed) available upstairs. It is very quiet in our street at night and many guests have commented on how well they have slept here. Bathroom and kitchen are shared with the host family. Guests are welcome to help themselves to hot drinks at all times and to store items of food in the fridge.
You will enjoy great views across the valley from the garden and its sheltered patio. We are a vegetarian household and provide a wholesome cold buffet style breakfast (muesli/ porridge/ yoghurt/ wholemeal toast or rolls with a number of different spreads or cheeses/ boiled eggs/ fresh fruit and tea, fresh coffee and juice ) included in the price. There is the option of an occasional vegetarian meal with us (by arrangement) when I would ask for a contribution towards the cost. I'm happy to cater for people with special dietary needs provided that you let me know in advance.
The house is situated on the north east side of the historical City of Bath, about 30 minutes on foot or less than 10 minutes by car from the centre, yet very close to open countryside with some lovely walks. One of those takes you to an old Norman chapel, surrounded by an old cemetery and a holy well in an enchanting garden.
The bus stops opposite the house and takes about 20 minutes to the bus and train station.
There's plenty of on-street parking and the neighbourhood is very pleasant.
Bath is a popular tourist attraction, with a cosmopolitan ambience but small enough to explore its historical sights and unique architecture on foot. The city has a variety of great restaurants, some of which are very reasonably priced . There are several Indian restaurants where you can bring your own wine, one in fact a mere 5 minute walk from our house.
The nearest local shop also is within easy reach on foot.
Theatres, cinemas, sport-centres, the famous spa-bath, museums, art galleries, pubs and night-clubs - it's all there.
Bristol is 15 mins away by train whilst Salisbury, Oxford and famous sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury, the Cotswolds and Glastonbury or the beaches of the south coast are within easy reach for a day out.
Non-smokers. No Pets.
Guests are welcome to sit out on our patio when the weather allows! We have a long garden with a small field at the end, and beautiful views over the countryside to the south east. In summer we often serve breakfast in the garden.
Interaction with Guests
Having lived here for a long time, we know all the best places to visit, and we're happy to discuss the local area with guests. We provide a local map and bus timetable too.
We are in a quiet suburb with rolling green hills, lovely views, walks into the open countryside 5 minutes from our house, and a 30 minute walk to the city centre, hilly but with great views. The centre of Bath has lots of interesting and unusual shops, and many restaurants and tourist attractions.
There is a bus stop right opposite our house, and it takes around 10 minutes to the City centre. To get here from the city, take the No. 6 which is quickest (or the No. 7 but it goes a longer way round), and to return from our house to town take the No. 7 (quickest going to town) or the No. 6.
If you feel fit and walk into town there are wonderful views on the way, and it takes 30 minutes.
As I work part-time and irregular hours it is more convenient for me to have flexible check-in hours. It is all the more important for guests to communicate their approximate arrival times as soon as they know, if possible the day before, so that I can make the necessary arrangements; sometimes a bit of negotiating is needed to find a time that suits both the guest and us.
We are a vegetarian household. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare snacks and use the pots/crockery, but only for veggie food.
In the evening people are free to return to the house however late they wish, naturally we would expect a "quiet " return after midnight. Similarly we ask guests not to use the shower after midnight or before 7.30 am unless we have agreed to it beforehand.
A brilliant place to stay! Petra and her husband are very nice and friendly. My friend and I quite enjoyed chatting with them. The house is pretty nice and cozy. I would love to recommend this lovely place to everyone!
Very nice to stay, had a great experience
We were made very welcome and had a nice stay. Petra gave us a nice breakfast.
Thank you Petra and Dick for such kind hospitality and for your travel suggestions. Despite Dick being quite sick, our hosts were very accommodating and made us feel at home. They were able to suggest lots of places to see and I'd recommend the madmax tour to Stonehendge. Bath is a beautiful city and our stay with Petra and Dick helped us get the most from our Bath experience.
I would 100% recommend staying at their place in the future. The view from the garden across the surrounding hills was beautiful and the log fire in the bedroom was a real bonus.
Thank you :)
Lovely homely place , comfortable and very amenable hosts. Nice breakfast too
The moment we came back to Petra's house, my parents said that it felt like we finally came back to home after this long journey. It's a good experience in Bath and thank Petra's warm house.
Petra and Dick were excellent hosts - from meeting me early to take my luggage back to the house, to a cup of tea and great conversation after a long day walking around the city and breakfast the next morning. Their home is charming and spotless. The bed, even though a pullout, was comfortable, and with the heat and blackout curtains, made for a great sleep. I would absolutely stay there again if I found myself back in Bath.
My name is Petra. Both my husband and I are quite sociable and enjoy meeting people. I work part-time teaching German which means that I can spend parts of the day at home. My favourite thing is dancing - Swing, Argentine Tango and a bit of Salsa and that keeps me busy two or three evenings a week. Otherwise I sew, experiment with cooking and in the summer we more or less live in the garden. When we can get away we usually head to southern Europe as we love the mediterranean climate and way of life.
We are vegetarians, so please refer to the house rules regarding food!
We would love to welcome you to our house, please send us a message if you have any questions.
