The Colline du Chateau overlooking the Baie des Anges and harbour offers a spectacular vantage point overlooking the city. Not much is left of its ruined castle besides crumbling walls. Still, climbing up the stairs to reach the platforms 90 metres above Nice is well worth the view. There is also an ascenseur (lift) which will take you three quarters of the way up. Be aware that the castle "park" closes at around sunset.
Nice is also known for several museums, entry to most of which (as of July 2008) is free. Some of the most famous are in Cimiez, the older, upper part of the city which in a previous century was a favourite of Queen Victoria, including:
Museum of Asian art, Indian, chinese, southeast asian, and world art in great architecture on a lake free entrance.
Parc Phoenix, 2500 different plants in botanical garden and tropical glass house. Also various animals.
Musee Chagall. Includes stained glass windows by the artist.
Musee Matisse, Charming collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures in 17th century Genoese villa free entrance.
The old town (Vieux Nice) beneath the hill is a maze of streets and alleys, with many picturesque houses, boutiques and home to the daily flower and fruit market of the Cours Saleya.
Near the central bus terminal, there is also the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) with four connected towers featuring modern and contemporary artists and their sculptures, paintings, and conceptual installations. Its open-air roof terraces offer one of the best panoramas of the city.
To the west, there is the Musee des Beaux-Arts housing an excellent collection of pastels and other works by Jules Cheret, among other artists.
Cliff Walk — If you go past the old port (probably 15 minute walk) heading east toward Monaco, there is a little pathway that leads from Coco Beach along the side of the cliff, the "Sentier Littoral" which you can follow around Cap de Nice half way to Villefranche, but be prepared for several hundred steps up to rejoin the road. It’s a very beautiful walk and you will find mostly local people using it.

Great location and very close walk to the beach. So many restaurants and cafes close by. In the old part of nice which was really nice. Luckily there is a carspot which is about a 5-10 minute walk but you wont need your car as its close to everything; shops, beach, fish and flower market.
Laurent was a really easy host and very friendly.
Laurent’s place in Rue Droite is just as he describes it. I was there for a month and I’d recommend it – be warned though, if you are renting a place in old town (vieux Nice) as most of the streets are narrow and the buildings are usually 4 or 5 floors, most places are dark and the street noise can be a problem.
We enjoyed 3 wonderful days in the beautiful fisherhouse apartement from Laurent. Even late arrival was no problem and the location couldn't have been any beter. Breakfast in the café, than the 1 minute walk to the beach and in the afternoon we explored the city. Thank you very much and we'll defenetily come back, Daniela and Leonie
We had a great stay at Laurent's apartment. He provided us free parking pass during our stay at a nearby public parking. It is a 10-minute walk to the apartment, which is a little far when you have a lot of suitcases to carry, but since it's one of the nearest parking place, we really had no choice. The apartment building is in the old town, a 10-minute walk to the beach, which is very convenient. The interior of the building and the apartment is recently renovated. The apartment is not big, but enough for 4 people. It's very stylish and has everything you need, including an air conditioner, which was really useful. Laurent speaks pretty good English and is very generous and flexible so we had a great communication.
We recommend Laurent and his apartment to anyone.
Laurent was a fantastic host and we loved his apartment.
We stupidly tried to drive our car all the way to the door of Laurent's apartment, and nearly got the car wedged in the narrow streets of Old Nice. We gave Laurent a call and he quickly came to find us, then drove with us out of narrow streets and into the car parking space. He also gave us several recommendations for good places to eat in the neighbourhood, told us about the exhibitions on in town, and showed us where all the usual places were - supermarket, best ice cream shop, trams stops, etc.
The apartment itself was clean, spacious, and right in the heart of Old Nice. There's a great restaurant right next door, and its a 5 minute walk to the beach.
We would highly recommend staying at Laurent's apartment.
Merci beaucoup, Laurent!
I stayed with my friends in the apartment of Laurent and we really liked it! Laurent was flexible with arranging for the keys, which was very convenient for us. The apartment is the heart of the beautiful old city and the apartment itself is clean and the beds were good as well.
Fantastic location and great flat for the price. Laurent was and easy and great host and we would definitely stay here again.
Nice app, very central, close to the beach. Laurent an Sonja were perfect, very helpful, gentle an everything. Highly recommendable. Hope, I can manage to come again. Thanx
Laurent was a great host! We arrived earlier than first planned, but Laurent was very accomodatind and sent someone to meet us right away. The apartment is a hidden gem, in the middle of old town nice. It is a very nice and well decorated apartment that will easily fit 4. There was no lift but this was not a problem for us, and his kind friend alao helped with our luggage. Laurent was also kind enough to provide us with parking in the flower market parking structure, which was a 5 minute walk from the apartment.
