The Colline du Chateau overlooking the Baie des Anges and harbour offers a spectacular vantage point overlooking the city. Not much is left of its ruined castle besides crumbling walls. Still, climbing up the stairs to reach the platforms 90 metres above Nice is well worth the view. There is also an ascenseur (lift) which will take you three quarters of the way up. Be aware that the castle "park" closes at around sunset.
Nice is also known for several museums, entry to most of which (as of July 2008) is free. Some of the most famous are in Cimiez, the older, upper part of the city which in a previous century was a favourite of Queen Victoria, including:
Museum of Asian art, Indian, chinese, southeast asian, and world art in great architecture on a lake free entrance.
Parc Phoenix, 2500 different plants in botanical garden and tropical glass house. Also various animals.
Musee Chagall. Includes stained glass windows by the artist.
Musee Matisse, Charming collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures in 17th century Genoese villa free entrance.
The old town (Vieux Nice) beneath the hill is a maze of streets and alleys, with many picturesque houses, boutiques and home to the daily flower and fruit market of the Cours Saleya.
Near the central bus terminal, there is also the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) with four connected towers featuring modern and contemporary artists and their sculptures, paintings, and conceptual installations. Its open-air roof terraces offer one of the best panoramas of the city.
To the west, there is the Musee des Beaux-Arts housing an excellent collection of pastels and other works by Jules Cheret, among other artists.
Cliff Walk — If you go past the old port (probably 15 minute walk) heading east toward Monaco, there is a little pathway that leads from Coco Beach along the side of the cliff, the "Sentier Littoral" which you can follow around Cap de Nice half way to Villefranche, but be prepared for several hundred steps up to rejoin the road. It’s a very beautiful walk and you will find mostly local people using it.
Great Host. He had to change location of apartment a few times, but he was very accomodating. Location of apartment was very central.
I stayed at Laurent's apartment for a month and it was absolutely perfect! Exactly as pictured, great communication and the location could not be better! I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone!
Laurent was the perfect host with a brilliantly located apartment. Right from the start of the booking process Laurent was very helpful in making the stay perfect for us. The apartment was right in the heart of the old town so we had everything on our doorstep.
Laurent made us feel very welcome and he gave us restaurant suggestions. Great location! Short walk from the sea and tram stop. Very clean and comfortable! We really enjoyed our stay here. Close to many restaurants.
We had a very nice stay at the apartment. It was exactly as shown in the pictures, and the best location in Nice. 3 to 5 minutes walk from anywhere in the Old Town, shops, bakeries, etc. No ensuite laundry but there is a decent laudromat 2 minutes away. Steep stair access may not be suitable for everyone. Laurent was very friendly and provided us with useful tourist information.
The apartment is very well furnished and large. It is in a fantastic location, very close to restaurants, shops, museums, parks, buses, the beach, etc. When a light bulb went out in the bathroom, Laurent sent somebody to replace it right away. He very helpfully lent us a baby bed and high chair as well. The neighborhood is a bit noisy, but this is to be expected in such a vibrant part of a busy city.
