Surrounded by lush cedar forests and streams, this secluded country house is the perfect escape to experience traditional Japanese rural life. The place would remind you "My Neighbor Totoro" with a perfect Showa atmosphere. Explore the retro surroundings, cycle to the local temples, or simply enjoy the tranquil silence surrounded by nature.

For more detail, read my guidebook or ask me questions. I willingly give you information.
◆shuttle service available for guests staying more than 2 nights

The space
The property itself is an old farmhouse that once used to house a local farming family. When you first enter the house, you will find a big ‘kotatsu’ (traditional leg heating device). Adjacent to this is another living room with sofas and a beautiful view of the river – enjoy a warm cup of tea while listening to the flowing water. There are two connected tatami rooms surrounded by a long corridor facing a court. On the upper floor, there are two independent tatami rooms which you can use as bedrooms.
The house is an architecture typical to the region, and somehow very similar to the houses which used to be found throughout Japan during Showa Era (from 1926 to 1989) and filled with retro stuff which used to be fashionable at some time during Showa Era.
The house provides ten sets of Futons/duvets, a washing/drying machine and top-of-the-range bicycles of different sizes.
You could enjoy walking/cycling through a country village, visiting local temples and shrines, fishing, etc. by yourselves. If you have a car, you could drive to a variety of destinations including the sea coast, lakes and historical sites.
Guests staying more than 2 nights are offered for free some activities such as a guided cycling tour, traditional games, home cooking or yukata wearing.

I was born and grew up in Tokyo, studied in Kyoto and moved to Tome 9 years ago because I was fascinated by a traditional way of life that has already disappeared in big cities. People here, especially elderly people, keep semi-self-sufficient life; they grow rice and many kinds of vegetables in their fields, harvest bamboo shoutings, wild vegetables, mushrooms, etc. in the mountain, process/preserve the harvests and eat them whole year instead of just buying food in the supermarkets. The local people also inherit many traditional customs, events and performances. Through my travels in Japan and other countries, I have been always interested in the way of life and nature unique to the place rather than famous tourism spots. I would like to introduce local culture to people from all over the world.

During your stay
The host family lives 15 minutes away from the house. But you can reach me via free WiFi in the house, anytime you may want or need. I am happy to help you with anything and share some knowledge about Japanese culture with you. I could show you some traditional plays like Origami and Kendama, and dress you Yukata (cotton Kimono) if you wish. If you would prefer to have a conversation in person, please let me know and I’ll happily arrange a visit, otherwise, you’ll have the whole property to yourselves.
