The space

Our home is on a quiet road a few kms from Ojochal. We are at 800' elevation so there is a warm breeze off the ocean during the day and a cool breeze off the mountains at night. The climate is perfect - no heat or air conditioning needed. We are 5 km from the main highway, an easy drive to reach our home.

Guest access

Our home has 1350 sq' on two levels. The upper level includes two large bedrooms each with their own ensuite bath & shower. The beds are queen size doubles. The bedrooms are separated for privacy by the central kitchen area which includes a breakfast bar.
The covered Terrace is ideal for dining and relaxing. The lower pool level has a patio and shower as well as the laundry room and bodega/pool room. Our 2 hectare lot has a mountain stream on two sides. One half has been left as Natural Jungle and the rest is landscaped and includes a variety of flowering and fruit bearing plants including banana, lemon and pineapple.

Interaction with guests

We have a Property Manger who lives close by. He will meet you in the village, take you to our home and make sure all is well during your stay.

The neighborhood

Our home is in a residential development which features large private lots on a dead end road. There are a number of beautiful homes and with only four beyond us, there is very little traffic. There is none of the highway noise, dust & higher temperatures found closer to the ocean.

Getting around

From the Pacific Coast Highway, a gravel road winds through Ojochal and then heads toward the mountains. A gradual climb over 2 km will get you to our place. Our area features three National Parks, Manuel Antonio to the north, Corcovado to the south and, very close by, Marina Ballena, the only Marine National Park in Costa Rica. The beaches along the Pacific Coast are wonderful - easily accessible and usually uncrowded. There are lots of activities - ATV Tours, Zip Lining, Canopy Tours, Whitewater Rafting, Horseback Riding - in the area.

We stayed at Casa Tranquila for three weeks during the rainy season, from late August to mid September. Over the past 20 years we have visited Costa Rica, and we had stayed at various accommodations from a mountain lodge to a Tico-run hotel and a beach house without walls, but never a 4-star hotel. Each accommodation had met or exceeded our expectation; however, “Casa Tranquila” was a different story. Surrounded by beautiful nature, the property is frequented by many kinds of birds, including tucans, and butterflies. It’s a fun experience to wake up hearing howler monkeys nearby. The swimming pool is definitely a plus. We think that this property would be suitable for a short stay. If you plan to stay there during the rainy season, please be aware that power outages, which can last 3-4 hours, are common. Be sure to ask the host to keep enough candles. Also, be aware that it usually takes 15 minutes to drive the bumpy dirt road between the house and the highway, but that it can take 20-25 minutes during the heavy rainstorm, which happens almost every day. Additionally, don't be surprised to find gecko’s poop on the kitchen counter, the floor, or your bed. We will forever remember this house as Casa de Gecos. Overall, what was promised or described prior to our stay was not fulfilled. No bi-weekly maid service was provided during our 3-week stay. We supplied not only dish soap, hand soap, paper towel but bathroom tissue by ourselves. The safe was broken, and so was the main lock of the door to the outdoor living area. A few light bulbs were burned out and the batteries of both TV and DVD controllers were dead from the day one. A Brita filter for drinking water was never found or provided. After explaining in advance that solid Internet access was important, the Internet went down frequently, and we ended up purchasing our own device to replace their equipment, which ICE (telephone company) said was outdated. We hope that the owner will make some improvements for the future guests.

Casa Tranquila was perfect. It was as described. The location was superb. We saw monkeys, birds and a lot of other critters. The pool was great on those hot days. I would also like to thank Ken for the greet and showed us around the place. There are great restaurants in the area and some beautiful beaches not too far. We had a great and relaxing time.

Jim's place was perfect, the way the house is designed, the large outdoor terrace was wonderful we could see tucans eating from the papaya plant, all kinds of birds, butterflies and surrounded by tropical plants and flowers all over. It felt like we were in the middle of the jungle up in the mountain, it is like paradise. Ken was very helpful giving us info. and places to visit, his wife Sharon sells homemade goodies on Friday morning in the village and a guy sells fresh fish. Just loved Ojochal!!!!! Thank you Jim for sharing your house, it made our trip unforgettable. Nicole and Michel

Jim's place is incredible, the vegetation is matured and pool is always clean. The property manager Ken gave us many ideas of things to do in the region and is a very nice man. Great restaurants in the area, do the zipline tour that is about 15 minutes south of ojochal as it is incredible. This place is definitely worth renting!!!

The agent gave us a warm welcome and was very helpful! The house itself is very comfortable and the view is amazing. Sitting on that balcony is like watching a magic performance of numerous birds, butterflies and other animals. We had a wonderful time and will certainly come again!

The house is great; it is situated up in the mountains where it is quiet with lots of animals and birds around, it has two bedrooms with their own bathroom, the kitchen is equiped so you can cook your own meals and the living room is outside which makes you enjoy and appreciate Costa Rica and surroundings as much as possible. There is a safe in the house which we found very useful. The pool is a great asset and was very much appreciated. It is to be noted that as nice beaches and bigger mercados (grocery store) are about a 30 minute drive, a car is a must have in that area. It is to be mentioned that there are lots of ants everywhere. You really need to keep floors, counter tops, dishes very clean all the time to avoid having too many ants around. It is part of being in Costa Rica where humidity is, during rainy season anyway, very high. We haven't met Jim however, communications with him before were excellent. Communications with Ken, property manager who we dealt with as Jim was away, were excellent as well. Ken is very helpful, dedicated and knowledgeable about the area. By the way, Ken's wife (Sharon) makes awesome salsa, papaya&mango jam, hot red pepper jelly and more. In addition, Randal the fish guy, is selling fresh fish every Friday morning at the local bar. The fish and shrimps bought from him were very good! We also tried Osa Canopy Tour for a Zip Lining activity and we found it excellent! It is located about 40-45 drive from the house. Overall, we found the place to be excellent and recommend it.
