Sumner Mansion Inn has been operating as a successful B & B for 20 years. It has also hosted numerous weddings, Dartmouth class reunions, conferences, family reunions (see separate listing to rent full house), bar/s mitzvahs, anniversaries, concerts, yoga training sessions and just about any other sort of function you can think of. 88 people may be seated comfortably for dinner in the main dining room and library. There are four guest bedrooms, 3 with queen beds and one with twin beds.
While conveniently located just off Route 91 and near many area attractions, this charming inn is an idyllic and romantic getaway spot. Though located in the village, this IS Vermont so don't be surprised to be welcomed by Alpaca sheep as you drive onto the grounds.
Sumner Mansion is an Asher Benjamin designed house and listed on the National Historic Register as having been built in 1807. It is said to be one of the best examples of Federal architecture in Vermont. It was built by David Sumner, a lumber businessman, who occupied it during his most prominent years (phone number hidden)). Many of the original features are still in tact. A newer library (Asher Benjamin design) houses 2000+ books that would satisfy just about any interest.
Guest rooms are very spacious, each with a private bath, down featherbeds, duvets and quality linens, hairdryer and iron. Some rooms have their original fireplaces. Free WI-FI and parking are always available. A scrumptious hot Vermont breakfast featuring local ingredients is included in the nightly rate.
Harpoon Brewery and Simon Pierce glassblowing are just down the road. Sumner is conveniently located just off R91 and a short drive to both Woodstock, VT and Hanover, NH, St. Gaudins Nat'l Park, Quechee Gorge, numerous other museums and historic sites.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast there are so many options. Cross country skiing and hiking trails are right here in town while kayaking, biking, golf, horseback riding are all locally available. Suicide Six, Dartmouth Skiway, Okemo and Killington have been popular winter destinations for guests.
It is possible to rent the entire house (add another bedroom with 2 double beds) for a long weekend or week. This has been done by groups of friends for a long ski weekend or family holiday get together. The kitchen is available for these events. The price varies by season/holiday so contact owner for rates.
AirB&B does not handle each state's taxes so I am required to charge you the 9% Vermont Room and Meals tax at the time of your stay.
Had a great time. Jill gave us some tips on stuff to do. The best was a back road from Hartland to Woodstock that was really lovely. The place is also very nice. Highly recommended!
My mother and I had an amazing stay with Jill.
It was the highlight of our adventure from California to Boston-Vermont-Montreal. I haven't stopped telling friends about the magical home, the llamas I wanted to steal after petting, and the farm that Jill brought us to visit. Jill was a delightful host and we wanted to spend more time with her and hear about her family, her home and her experiences in the area.
Jill has an eye for detail and we could definitely see that from the antiques she collects to the comfortable bedding, towels and even table place settings. We had a memorable breakfast of Jill's homemade granola, blueberry pancakes with boiled apple cider (which I'm now addicted to), and wild boar sausages.
I would love to return every fall and see the leaves change color and visit Jill. I hope that our paths do cross again!
We had a most delightful stay at the Sumner Mansion!! Jill was an excellent host. She was very welcoming and showed us around the grounds, and gave us some history regarding the mansion and its surroundings. The room was classically decorated, quiet, clean and inviting. It was a great experience all around and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful stay in a most unique setting.
Jill could not have been a more wonderful host and her mansion is truly splendid. From the start Jill made us feel at home, our room was sumptuous and the wonderful breakfasts prepared by Jill and served in the elegant dining hall were a real treat. We would go out of our way next time to stay at Jill's again. Hartland is a short drive from Woodstock VT (great shopping and pretty town) and Hanover NH which is an historic university town and worth a visit.
Wow! We had to put up some overflow guests this past weekend and now we all wish we could have gone with them to Sumner Mansion. It was not only one of the most inexpensive places around, it was also one of the best places I have seen. The rooms were gigantic, clean and luxurious. Plus we all got invited to breakfast which was fresh with local foods including the maple sausages, eggs, and even the granola. Our only regret was that none of us had any children who needed a wedding venue because this would have been the place. Right off the highway but very private. We would definitely use them again.
