In picking Henri’s place, I wanted a place that would be modern, that would have a fridge, that would allow me to connect to the Internet and to work (with a writing surface). I went with another colleague, and we liked the fact that the apartment offered two separate floors, each with its own bathroom. The first floor bedroom has a door; the second does not, which definitely meant less privacy. I thought the apartment was very tastefully appointed and colorful; each bedroom has a skylight, which is quite nice. I would definitely go back. However, I do have some reservations: My colleague and I were going to Marrakech to work at the Conference on Climate Change. Henri, our host, told us that the apartment was 15-20 minutes walking distance from the Conference site. This was patently false. We were at least an hour away by foot. Not only were we at least an hour away from the conference center by foot, the apartment was really not in walking distance of any of the major sites in Marrakech. It was a full hour’s walk away from Jamaa el Fna Square. While there were places nearby to purchase water and bread, the nearest sit-down restaurant was a 15-20 minute walk away. A bank and a supermarket were about a 20-minute walk away. This was a major, major disadvantage. Henri told us we could take taxis, but for non-Moroccans, taking a taxi meant negotiating the price every time one got in, and this got to be quite fatiguing. We really wanted to walk. Because of the tremendous distances involved, I ended up renting a bicycle, and my colleague left the apartment after the first week of a two-week stay. Another major inconvenience was that the apartment advertised as having wi-fi. The wi-fi did not work at all on the second floor, where my colleague was staying, and this was another reason that contributed to her leaving. On the third floor, the wi-fi conked out unexpectedly about five times for hours at a time. For us, who depended on e-mails to know what our next assignment would be, this was awful. The liaison for the apartment, Hamed, was extremely nice. However, I would suggest that future tenants reach a clear understanding with him about his oversight. In our case, he would let himself in the apartment to see how we were doing in the evening and in the morning. Sometimes, he would do so when I was asleep. I felt this was an invasion of privacy, but I would like to think this was a misunderstanding and could be negotiated in advance. On the plus side, the apartment is not in a touristy area. It is very quiet, but... at night you can hear cats clawing, dogs barking, roosters crowing, and then, at either 4:30 a.m. or 5:30 a.m., the call to prayer...We must have been close to a mosque. Lastly, I tried to contact our host, Henri, various times towards the end...

Our host Hamad made us feel welcome upon arrival offering tea and his services. The place was very clean, colorful and comfortable. The rooftop terrace was a bonus and perfect for breakfast or a drink at sunset. The neighborhood was very busy and had some local shops offering your basic necessities as well as some delicious Moroccan treats. One should mention that the mattress of the main room was quite hard. Overal we had a splendid stay. Thank you!
