This cabin was the perfect place for us to explore the Sacred Valley. We stayed here for about a week and it truly lives up to its name "Cozy Cabin". Although Mariela was travelling in Europe while we were visiting she called several times to make sure all was well and to help clarify arrangements for tours, etc. However, while Mariela is away, Charo (Bubu) was our host and we could not have been in better hands! Not being very proficient in Spanish, she helped us immensely with restaurant reservations, taxis, a fishing trip, shopping, laundry etc, etc. She even cooked us a birthday dinner with Pisco Sours!
The cabin and surrounding gardens were beautiful. Very peaceful and relaxing. Bubu, the caretaker, is incredibly sweet & helpful. Though Mariela herself was traveling during our stay, she was very quick to respond to any of my questions during the booking process.
If you're looking for a place to really get away from it all, this place is perfect. However if you want to be able to easily walk to town & restaurants, this is not the right place, especially if you have any mobility issues. It's about a 10 minute walk on very narrow & uneven dirt roads to the main highway, and then at least 15 minutes more to the edge of Urubamba. There are moto taxis available, and Bubu can help arrange a driver to take you to town or sightseeing. For me though I was hoping to be a bit more centrally located to town.
Mariela was very responsive during the reservation process. The cute little house was just as pictured, in a beautiful setting. The caretaker was very accommodating, greeting us, letting us put our luggage in the house so we could go to Machu Picchu. We were able to walk up through the small village and take a mototaxi to go shopping at the market for groceries. We enjoyed the solitude and, oh yes. "the friendly dogs".
While the cottage and the surrounding land is breathtaking, it really was the caring nature of our host Mariela and her staff, Bubu, that elevated our trip into something that was truly magical.
I can't say enough great things about this cottage and about both Mariela and Bubu. Both ladies went out of their way every day of our stay (we stayed 3 nights total) to make us comfortable, help us plan excursions, and pretty much anything else we needed! Bubu made us breakfast, built us multiple fires daily, arranged taxis and even did laundry for us for only 6 soles, which at this point in our trip was much needed! Mariela would call daily from the States to check in and facilitate any information needed between us and Bubu. The cottage itself is pretty much my dream home, with a stone fireplace to keep you warm in the mornings and at night, and it's location is amazing. Nestled in between two mountains in a little valley, you have a beautiful yard to sit outside and enjoy a book in the afternoons or walk down to the Urubamba river. We also were able to hike from the cottage on foot to the Salt Mines which was spectacular. As I said, Bubu and Mariela arranged several taxis for us to go into town and try restaurants and see the Urubamba area. (Be sure to try out Huacatay and Kaia, both great food!) And on our day of departure the ladies arranged for a taxi driver to take us first to the well known market in Pisac and then on to the Cusco airport. My other favorite part of staying here were the dogs living on site. All super friendly, they added a charm and warmth to the experience! Again, can't say enough about this cottage, a great experience and a way to feel like your off the beaten path without getting too far away from town!! Thank you both to Mariela and Bubu, we'd definitely visit again!
Dear Ashley and John,
Thanks so much for your kind words. We are so happy to know we achieved our main goal: To make our guests feel as comfortable and happy as possible while visiting the Sacred Valley and our dear Peru. May you return soon and may we be able to host you or visit you when here. Best of luck and thanks so much again!
Mariela, Bubu and the doggies and parrot :)
Mariela and Bubu did a great job of making my girlfriend and I feel welcome. Though Mariela was in Florida during our visit, she was always available via phone and email.
The moment we arrived, Bubu introduced us to the 4 dogs that live on the property, and we instantly fell in love with Roy (the brown and white pit bull), because he reminded us so much of our own pit bull, Jack. I later told Bubu "Queremos llevar Roy a los estados unidos con nos." to which she replied "No!", and we all had a good laugh. Roy is her hijito, and he is precious. If you are scared of pit bulls, Roy will be the one to change your mind and make you a pit bull lover for life.
While at the cabin, Bubu is like the mother you never had - checking in on you, making you breakfast each morning, arranging activities around Urubamba and taxis into town. She can also build a fire faster than a boy scout, which comes in handy during the chilly nights in the cabin.
There are some restaurants that are walking distance from the cabin, but bear in mind that you will need to hire taxis to go pretty much anywhere else, and the cost can add up. It's a good idea to confirm the cost of the taxi prior to leaving, that way you don't get ripped at the end of the trip (we had hired a taxi to drive to some ruins one day and were under the impression it would be 150 soles, but when we returned to the cabin, the driver told us it would be 200 soles). That said, It is nice that the cabin is located far away from all the noise of the center of town, and thus makes for a peaceful retreat.
Some added bonuses are the variety of plants and flowers around the property, the river (though too cold to swim in, it is nice and relaxing to walk along and sit by), and the property has a very romantic vibe which is great for couples.
I cannot thank Mariela and Bubu enough for their hospitality during our stay. I would recommend this place for your stay in Urubamba.
