About this listing

Hark Back to a Simpler Time. As you sit on the front porch of the Erehwon Retreat, you’re transported to years gone by, when life was simpler and time moved slower. Ideal for vacations, honeymoons, family getaways and reunions (we also have a cottage on this property). Come discover why Florida is so much more than “the prize” for a life well lived somewhere else.

The space

From the minute you walk in the front door, you’ll notice each room has been lovingly restored, with touches from the arts and crafts era like arches, columns and original pendant lights. The built-in bookshelves, next to the massive fireplace, contain all the Harvard Classics and the complete works of Shakespeare for your reading pleasure.

Even with all nostalgic features, you’ll still get modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, washer and dryer, dishwasher, off-street parking and light housekeeping every third day.
The thoughtful touches continue into the bathroom, where you’ll find towel warmers and luxurious custom-made Erewhon Retreat tea olive soap, made right from the plants found around the home.
At night, lay your head down on the plush mattresses and fall asleep on luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets. Choose from either of the queen bedrooms, one with ensuite that includes a tub and shower. There is a second, large master bath, also with tub and shower.

Guest access

When it comes time to eat, head to the gorgeous and well-stocked kitchen where you’ll always find all the basics for a quick snack or gourmet meal. We stock the pantry and fridge with cereal, pancake mix, real maple syrup, spices, butter, milk, Florida OJ, tea, coffee and more.

We are also members of Shipt, so if you need food items beyond what we stock, send us a list. We'll do the shopping and Shipt will deliver same day!

We supply beach towels and cooler, suntan lotion and bug spray, bath soap, shampoo, makeup remover, free laundry & detergent, toilet paper, paper towels.
Even the backyard invokes feelings of another era, when gardens were a sense of pride for homeowners. Meander through the well-kept yard, smelling and enjoying the vibrant colors of the numerous native Florida plants. Grab a book and find a spot of shade under the 90-year-old camphor trees and laurel oaks. In the early evening hours, guests of both the cottage and the bungalow often gather on the deck, swapping stories of the day and enjoying the company of the property cat, Thomas.

Interaction with guests

I am present on the grounds during your stay to answer questions and introduce you to the neighborhood and the surrounding area. Whether we're booking an executive transfer or vacationer, we are regularly greeting guests from across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Finland , Germany, Argentina, we feel it’s so important to help our guests feel comfortable and appreciated without ever intruding. In our four years 296 families found the time to relax and recharge at Erehwon Retreat - Cottage or Bungalow.

Other things to note

Entire property is landscaped in Florida Native Plants that thrive under Florida conditions. We have minimized the number of plants that require watering. We designed our landscape to create cover, nesting areas and food and strictly limit use of pesticides to insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils to protect the health of our wildlife visitors.

The house was a surprising delight. If you are a fan of American art, culture, and architectural history, you will enjoy the house, it's furnishings (and splendid yard!!), the neighborhood, and Henry. The cleanliness of house and caring generosity of Henry was greatly appreciated. Bed was excellent.

Our family of four had a lovely three night stay. The bungalow was just as described and Henry is an experienced, knowledgeable, and available host. If you're looking for an authentic, charming, and well equipped American Bungalow with all Seminole Heights has to offer and only minutes from downtown Tampa, look no further! We would definitely stay here again.

Response from Henry:
Thanks Suzanne, it was most delightful to have you with us. Did you take your picture while here, it looks like a shot from the Tampa Theater, Tampa's first Air Conditioned building (1926).

Thanks Elizabeth. Hope that early flight didn't erase all the relaxation you two found while staying at our retreat.

Henry was an exceptional host. He waited up to let us in at check in and was very welcoming after our long drive. The kitchen was well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again!

Response from Henry:
Thanks Ian, truly a delight to host the J School faculty from Annapolis. Having lived aboard my Rhodes Offshore 40 year round in Annapolis 2000-2003, I of course observed the first class training that goes into J World. Hope the USVI was terrific after you left us.

The house itself is nice but the surrounding area not so much. We were told upon arrival that there were break ins. Although our stay was fine, future guests may not be as fortunate. We also were unaware that Henry lived on the property and in order to enter and exit the property you must walk right by his living room window because he does not permit parking at the front door. He is also very active on the property with his plants and getting mail from the porch daily. This is our first airbnb where the owner lives on the property. One of the days we were sitting in the living room with the door open, enjoying the nice Florida weather when he walked up and told us the outside doors were not allowed opened and shut the door with no further discussion about it. Older couples would be the best guest for here, not families or young couples looking for romance.

Response from Henry:
Clarification, we have NEVER had any security issue within Old Seminole Heights, our immediate neighborhood, but we err on the side of insuring added security for our guests. We state in our House Rules and Welcome Book that because of our 90 year Camphor tree canopy we have flying termites and we ask that all windows and door remain shut. We tent and gas the property every 7 years to insure the preservation of our historic buildings. As Eric and his guests were using my home for building their business plan they were on property all day and early evening, so they didn't have an opportunity to see all the young families that have come into the neighborhood in the past decade.

Henry's home is impeccably furnished and he is the perfect host -- always available, but never intrusive. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Tampa, and hope to return to the retreat next year.

Thanks Caroline - totally enjoyed having you all visit Erehwon and deeply appreciated your comments and written review about our interior design. The best was your darling daughter, tell her Thomas sends her a "MEOW".

The house was exactly as pictured and worked out PERFECTLY for our wedding weekend guests. It was so much nicer to be in a home rather than a hotel, and having those amenities available made it so much easier with a baby and toddler. Henry was so kind to give a tour and talk about the history of the house, which my sister-in-law loved. The house is so charming, my family really enjoyed their stay! We will continue to stay at this house for all future visits!

Response from Henry:
Julie, Appreciate your taking the time to write a review. Appreciate the compliments on my historic restoration, as you know full well from owning and maintaining a mid '20's home yourself. I would be honored to host members of your family as the occasion presents itself.
