Set on over 100 acres of pristine wilderness on the San Marcos River just 50 miles south of Austin is Wahwahtaysee Resort, a luxury glamping retreat. The property features three carefully appointed safari tents that allow you to enjoy all of life’s luxuries amidst the great outdoors, creating a truly unique experience.
Wahwahtaysee Resort was started by a local Austin family, Robert Dillard and two of his sons, Sammy and Donny Dillard. Soon after purchasing the property, they learned that the Tonkawa Indians, a friendly tribe who got along well with everyone, previously inhabited the land. The Tonkawa Indians would spend their days fishing in the San Marcos River and picking pecans from the Pecan trees along the river. The first time the Dillard families all camped together, the property was surrounded by fireflies at dusk.
They soon named the property Wahwahtaysee Resort, which is Native American for firefly.
From their first time visiting the property, the Dillard family knew it was a special place, and one they wished to share with their children, friends, acquaintances, and soon-to-be friends for generations to come. Their vision was to create a local getaway for their family and friends to experience the great outdoors, while providing all the comforts and luxuries of a five-star resort. After a safari in South Africa, the Dillard family decided that safari tents would perfectly encapsulate the look and feel they wished to create. Guests would enjoy the incredible experience of spending the night in a tent in the middle of nature, with all the comforts of a luxury hotel.
The property features three luxury safari tents, which were custom made and designed in South Africa. The three tents, The Stargazer, The Little Dipper, and The Sanctuary, are 650 square feet and feature all the amenities of a Four-Seasons Resort. The bedroom includes a king-size bed, and there is a queen sleeper sofa in the living room to accommodate additional guests and families. The modern bathroom features a large shower and a spa bathtub. Luxury linens, bedding, and towels are provided. A kitchenette comes equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, and a coffeemaker and there is a dining area to enjoy your meals. There is a Green Egg to barbecue your own meals, or you can pre-order a Yeti dinner, where your tent will come with a Yeti cooler stocked with organic ingredients and a recipe card to make your own meal. With air conditioning, heating, and hardwood floors, you’ll enjoy all the comforts of a five star resort, while surrounded by beautiful nature. The spacious living area extends outdoors onto the expansive deck where you can truly disconnect from day-to-day life and reconnect with the great outdoors. There is outdoor furniture and a hammock, providing the perfect spot for relaxing with a book or a morning cup of coffee while nature provides a soothing soundtrack. There is also an outdoor shower for a truly unique experience.
With over 100 acres of land and extensive river frontage, Wahwahtaysee Resort offers something for everyone. Rest and relax in the luxurious safari tents, hike the property's many walking trails, pick pecans in the 150 year old pecan orchard, swim or tube in the numerous private beaches on the aquamarine San Marcos River, watch for shooting stars and fireflies, watch the beautiful sunsets over the pasture, and simply relax and listen to the sounds of nature. Feeling more adventurous? Wahwahtaysee Resort recently partnered with Go Outside Expedition Company to provide custom fly fishing trips, where you’ll be picked up directly on the water at Wahwahtaysee’s private beach. You can choose from half or full day float trips, kayak fly fishing, water casting lessons, or paddling trips.
We hope everyone enjoys Wahwahtaysee Resort as much as we do.
