It was a great experience to stay at Mai Lodging. Sharing the house with other travellers was nice as I didn't feel I was imposing myself. The place was always clean and I really like that I could lock my room. The location is great to go downtown or to the airport. I really enjoyed the place and location. Very quiet and safe. I'll likely be back next year! Thank you
Not a nice area of town. Very close to major social issues in Vancouver (drugs and prostituition). Black hand/finger prints on every door frame and were given duvet cover with blood stains on it. My instincts told me as I drove there it wasn't a nice neighborhood and my friend from Downtown Vancouver confirmed (with information about cedar cottage neighbourhood nearby listed earlier). Smells strongly of glade air fresheners. Well stocked kitchen for use (opted not to), two bathrooms with hair in them and on walls. If I could have found other accommodations I would have left due to neighbourhood.
Sorry that Vancouver did not meet your standards. Our residence is 1 block away from cedar cottage and we have never had problems with prostitution/drugs. The park is very family friendly. My apologies for the dirty sheets, if you had let me known I would provide new sheets immediately. Maybe downtown would of been a better solution for you. Best of luck.
The host was very receptive to my phone calls and responded immediately when we got lost upon arrival. Mai was very accommodating to our late arrival (past 1am) and answered her phone when we needed to speak with her. The apartment has at least 4 bedrooms with other guests. It was a challenge to take showers in the morning with the other guests waiting in line (felt like I was in a dorm room). There wasn't enough hot water for 4 people to take showers in a row. Everyone was nice about it, though! All rooms, including kitchen, were very clean. If you wish to cook your own food, kitchen is stocked with absolutely everything you will need.
Bedroom itself was snug but sufficient. The bed itself was very hard and uncomfortable (perhaps great for those who like extra firm mattresses). This is a basement apartment style and does not have AC, but you are provided with a fan in the bedroom.
Great location if you have a car. Quick 15 min ride into the heart of the city. Felt safe arriving late at night. Neighbors wake up very early, so it can get noisy after 6am.
This place was great. It is a private room in a house with many rooms (9 total I think - with only 4 on the lower floor), and the owners do not stay there. So if you are looking for economy but with privacy this is a good place since you don't feel like you are invading someone's house. It very much has a hostel feel but on a higher end. The bathrooms were really clean, really nice, and the kitchen was fully setup and really clean and modern. Our room (#7) was on the basement level and it was very nice. There is even free laundry!
Its close to the bus lines downtown, there is plenty of street parking, and its right next to a cute neighborhood park.
You call an hour ahead to check in and they will meet you there , just be sure your phone will work in B.C. if you are from the US. We were told both phones would work when we went and only one did so lucky we could call. If you aren't sure if they will work I would be sure you arrange a time to check in otherwise you will be stuck.
I would recommend this place to friends and stay here again.
I was supposed to call Mai an hour before checkin. I was a tourist from US and our cell phones did not work in Canada. . This was a major issue as public phone booths are a thing of the past any more. I therefore proceeded straight to the property hoping that Mai or her caretaker may show up and answer the doorbell. While in the neighborhood looking for the address I ran into a stranger and asked him for a favor and he readily obliged. When he called from his cell phone, the call went to a voice mail - he left a message that Chet is waiting to check in at her property. I had to have faith that someone will show up soon.
Upon reaching the property I saw 2 comfy chairs and a telephone on the front porch with the instructions to call Mai. I called again and left another message that I was now at the property. Within minutes David showed up .
David was extremely courteous - helped us with our bags, checked us in, familiarized us with the property. answered all our questions, gave us suggestions on restaurants near the place and he even offered to drive us to the restaurant which we readily accepted after a long tiring day of travel.
After dinner we settled in. Am keeps the place very clean. All the guests were extremely respectful of each others comfort and the stay was very comfortable. Mai / her caretaker was very accommodative and responsive in fulfilling our requests when we asked for an alarm clock and a fan to combat the unusual heat VC was experiencing. Am even offered to print and bring my boarding passes.
The place is extremely conveniently located to Vancouver public transport which is one of the best I have seen in the whole world (and I have traveled to several countries in 4 continents so far) - getting anywhere was a snap with bus stop just a block away, a slew of restaurants within a couple of blocks and shopping within 5-6 blocks.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the stay and would recommend it to my family and friends.
Mai made the process very easy for us. We were attending the World Cup final in Vancouver and the pictures of the house were exactly what we were given. With our busy schedule of traveling through Vancouver, we didn't get to meet Mai but we were very impressed with the quiet neighborhood and the close walk to the train. Especially since we were coming back late each night, we never felt unsafe. The house was perfect, the amenities were perfect, and compared to where our friends stayed, Mai's house was the best option. Thank you Mai for your hospitality.
