The Neighborhood

HISTORY & WINERIES
A 10-minute drive brings you to the the historic and picturesque Sonoma Plaza, which is surrounded by restaurants, galleries and shopping. San Francisco Solano Mission, founded in 1823, was the last and most northerly of the 21 Franciscan missions of Alta California. It marked the northern end of "The King's Highway," El Camino Real. And it was the 21 Franciscan missions of Alta California. It marked the northern end of "The King's Highway," El Camino Real. And it was the only one of the California missions to be established under Mexican rule, independent of Spain.

Numerous local wineries are a short drive away. Recommendations are: Cline and Jacuzzi (two of the few still offering FREE tastings) are enroute to the bungalow, if coming up from San Francisco along CA-121N/Arnold Dr. Other lovely nearby wineries are Viansa, Gloria Ferrer, Gunlach Bundshu, Kunde, as well as Sebastiani, which is right off the plaza. Benziger Winery is a beautiful biodynamic and organic winery in Glen Ellen, on Jack London Ranch Road, just a scenic 5 mile drive away. Definitely worth a visit.

SPA
The world class, 5 star FAIRMONT SONOMA MISSION INN AND SPA is on the same street, just a few blocks away. Treat yourself to a luxurious spa treatment or take a yoga class at their exquisite Willow Stream Spa. Full day use is $89 per day for non-guests of the hotel. For "locals" who live within 100 miles take advantage of the special LOCALS DAY USE RATE just $39, offered Sun-Fri, pending availability. Contact Willow Stream Spa for details.

FOOD
There are several eateries within walking distance--tasty taquerias, cafes and the Big 3, (the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa's family "bistro" restaurant). For a hot and hearty country breakfast, Mike's "Creekside Cafe" is just a short walk from the bungalow, over the little Sonoma Creek bridge. The Girl and the Fig at the main plaza never disappoints for a special dinner; we also love Cafe le Haye and Maya. The Glen Ellen Star in the nearby hamlet of Glen Ellen gets rave reviews, while the Community Cafe, with many delicious vegan and gluten-free options, at 875 W Napa Street, Sonoma is where locals eat breakfast and lunch and chat – give them a try!

If you'd like to prepare some of your own meals, there's also a full kitchen for your convenience.

SONOMA EXPERIENCE
In Winter & Spring -
The winter months are an amazing time to visit the valley as the hills and fields are alive with sheer beauty from welcome rains. The vineyards are dormant yet have beautiful subtle color.

If your idea of a Sonoma Wine Country visit includes quieter times, winter is the time to come. Time to rejuvenate, relax, and enjoy the valley without lots of traffic or lines for wine tasting at the wineries.

Escape to mild weather and rainbow time! Winter daytime temperatures range from the high 40s (a very cold day for us) to the mid 60s making this time of year perfect for long walks and hikes in the Sonoma Valley hills as well as stopping by the wineries or visiting historic sites. There is always the promise of an early spring known to happen sometimes as early as mid February

The Olive Festival
An annual series of events delightfully showcasing olives, one of the up and coming agricultural products of the Sonoma Valley. Enjoy a unique dinner and movie combination or a special Winemakers Dinner, or an inspiring cooking class. For a whole list of events, visit the Olive Festival's web (email hidden) or call Olive Festival headquarters at (phone number hidden). Held from December till the end of February.

In Summer & Autumn -
Our cherished Valley of the Moon can have long, sunny days and warm to sometimes hot (!) weather, with refreshing cool evenings. It can feel like springtime through October--perfect for enjoying hikes, biking trails or just eating al fresco at the plaza with a picnic basket.

Every Tuesday evening from May through October, starting at 5:30pm until dusk, there is the fantastic Farmer's Market at the plaza with live music and savory foods to sample. It'(email hidden)ly weekly event for locals and visitors alike; a must if you're here when it's happening!

Year round
Throughout the year, many wineries hold special events, presentations and performances. Search "Sonoma" online for upcoming calendar of events.

  • I could not have been more pleased with each and every aspect of Mari's Bohemian Bungalow. The impeccable suite exceeded my expectations in every way and Mari was such a kind and accommodating host. And the location? Wonderful. On the 100 point wine scale, I would give this property an even 100!

  • A girlfriend and I decided to take a weekend getaway to Sonoma after a long stressful workweek. Mari's Happy Bohemian Bungalow was just the oasis we needed! The property is very well maintained and adorable. Mari was welcoming and very communicative. The bungalow itself had everything we needed from towels and toiletries to a well stocked kitchen (came in handy for reheating our Duck Fat Fries from the nearby HotBox Grill.) We also enjoyed the collection of wine country related DVDs-it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of tastings.

I would absolutely recommend this property to a friend and hope to come back soon!

  • The Happy Bohemian Bungalow is a lovely place to stay and Mari is a great host.

Quiet location, nice bed, sweet garden, good bed, good selection of DVDs and books, vouchers for wine tastings in the Sonoma area...what more could you want.

If you're planning a stay in Sonoma look no further.

  • Staying in the Happy Bohemian Bungalow was a wonderful experience! It was my first time using AirBnB, so I am happy I chose to stay at the place that had one of the highest ratings in the Sonoma/Napa area. Although my girlfriend and I only stayed there for one night, we definitely enjoyed our time there. Mari provided a pleasant experience for us, and the amenities were just what we needed. Mari was very thorough--even providing a "welcome" packet and an introduction packet to the "must know" places in the area for dining, shopping, etc. She even provided some tasting vouchers for wineries around the area. No surprises--everything was as I expected, thanks to her frequent communication with me, and responsiveness to my questions before I arrived. Her bungalow was a very friendly and warm atmosphere, and so was she.

  • Extremely cute place to stay in the middle of wine country! Mari was so easy to work with and even accommodated a slightly earlier than normal check in so I could get ready for a wedding. She was there with her husband upon arrival and such a sweet couple! Super cute bungalow in her garden which had all the amenities for a stay. Wish we could have stayed longer! Extremely clean. Has a small kitchenette and she provides water and morning snacks, along with coffee, tea and hot chocolate. All of the details are covered here. Will definitely keep this place in mind the next time I am in town for an extended time. Much better than a hotel! Mari is great with communication and quick with all of her responses.
