Description

The space

By main road #1. Outstanding views. Remote. Hikes at the doorstep.

Welcome to the rustic 70's. This spacious attic apt comes with a separate entrance, cosy bedroom (two 120 cm beds), bathroom with shower and a large sitting room with single sofa beds (70 cm). Decorated in the traditional Icelandic 19th century turf house style ("baðstofa", a farm's living/sleeping room).

Before summer 2017 we will upgrade our "kitchenette", as it was not suitable for cooking meals before. For a complete list of appliances see Guest Access.

Linens and towels provided.

This is our second home. We rent the attic out during summer months. There may be guests in the main apartment and we ask you to be considerate and not make much noise.

Guest access

The attic is accessed via outdoor spiral staircase. Separate entrance and access to the whole attic apartment.

Privacy. The attic comes with space for preparing your breakfast, with fridge, microwave and coffee maker, coffee, tea and sugar. Other facilities are being put up in the attic before summer 2017; hot plate and kitchen sink, to make in more self sufficient.

(Alternatively, we may be available to arrange for breakfast for you to share, with local food. Please ask us when you book.)

A community thermal pool with panoramic views within 15 min drive.

Open until late night during summer.

Interaction with guests

We invite you to tell us a bit about yourself when you request to book, your group, your trip and your expectations. This helps us find out whether we are a match. We are experienced world travelers - and hosts. We love meeting new people and exchanging ideas and experiences. Since we travel ourselves we may not always be around for you, but when we are available we are more than happy to act as your local guide, escort you if you wish and to share stories, and equally; a bottle of wine. We want you to be comfortable in our home - and we also respect you privacy. When we are away, we make arrangements for you stay.

Restaurants: Restaurant with excellent food and service at Engimýri Guesthouse 2 km away, open May to September. We can also give you advice on some great culinary experiences in Akureyri.

Let us know what time of the day you will be arriving, in order for us to accommodate for you arrival/meet and greet you.

The neighborhood

Set in a privileged location in the north of Iceland, in one of the most picturesque valleys of Iceland. Just off the main road between Reykjavik and Akureyri, still remote and calm.

Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty - protected landscape. Secluded in farmlands, even if just by the main road. Endless hiking opportunities at the doorstep. Mountains and hills, (private!) waterfalls and lakes.

This place is for you nature lovers, hikers and dreamers, or you who just need a time off to rest for a while and stay off the beaten track.

Anything you want to ask? We are happy to help.

Getting around

Accessibility: The farmhouse is just by the main road, N1.

You need a car to get around. It takes you 25 min (32 km) to drive to Akureyri. 4 -5 hours to drive from Reykjavik City (350 km) on N-1.

Mountain roads (F-roads) are only open during summer; always check road.is

Alternatively, we can arrange for a pick up in Akureyri and there is a bus to Reykjavik twice a day.

DRIVE TO THE EAST:
Akureyri - 25 min
Goðafoss - 1 hour
Mývatn - 1 1/2 hrs
Húsvík - 1 1/2 hrs
Ásbyrgi - 2 hrs
Dettifoss - 2 hrs+

TO THE NORTH:

Our advice to you who are traveling in Iceland for the first time we borrow from Canadian photographer Stan Klasz in an interview with Stuck in Iceland:

"Apart from doing research on some of the great Icelandic travel guides, I think building extra time into a planned itinerary on a daily basis is so important. The weather is ever changing and if you build too tight of a schedule you will miss so many opportunities. I found that every turn presents something beautiful and to take the time to explore is paramount. Keep an open mind and be adaptable to change on the go."

Other things to note

Here you are able to switch off and relax - you can go hiking and enjoying the pristine nature away from hich tech devices, or just sit in the living room and admire the extraordinary views, or maybe read about the admired Icelandic poet and naturalist who was born here 200 years ago and made this landscape part of his immortal work, now translated into English.

Please respect the tranquil atmosphere we have created.

Hi, we are Sif and Oli, a couple of well travelled professionals.

Yes ;) we absolutely LOVE to travel. We have exchanged homes all over the world for the last decade, and we are not nearly there yet ;) We cherish the philosophy of exchanging homes with people that can teach you something about the world and yourself. We have met most of our guest and try to do so whenever we have the opportunity. Some of our guests have visited multiple times and many of them have become our friends.

We have four grown up kids and our work is in Europe and in Africa. We are nature lovers and we think its important to protect the environment. We do all kinds of outdoor activities, recently mostly sailing.

We will be happy to have you at our very special place in the north of Iceland. We have lived in Iceland, Belgium and Spain but we also travel for work. Now, when kids have left home, we might travel even more, work and pleasure.
