I stayed at Marlene’s Bed and Breakfast during a Spanish Language Immersion program that her daughter Sabrina directs. First hand, the staff and private taxi driver gave us a warm welcome at Sandino airport. Upon arrival, at our new home we were greeted with Pina Coladas made with fresh pineapple and coconut which happens to grow in the backyard. I partook in the complimentary breakfast of either traditional Gallo Pinto and Eggs, Cheese, Toast and/ or tortillas and delicious Nicaraguan coffee or café con leche. If you tire of that, Sabrina is a trained chef and there is a wide variety of food choices from the menu. She can whip up a simple omelet, Eggs Benedict or Eggs Hollandaise and if you don’t fancy eggs, the local fruit of coconut and pineapple and yogurt is refreshing choice. The staff keeps the house impeccable and well run and the bedroom where I stayed (Queen Ensuite) was cozy with comfortable mattress and an armoire to store my belongings. The neighborhood has beautiful canopy of trees that hang above the road as well as charming flora and fauna, this makes for a very peaceful walk to the local “pulperia” ( equivalent to a 7/11) if you want to buy the local pastries or soda or just want to practice your Spanish with the friendly locals. There are issues with mosquitoes but just turn on the fan and that bothers them. Unfortunately mosquitoes are the norm in the tropics and it's the price you have to pay for such beauty. I enjoyed site seeing with Sabrina to local colonial towns like Leon, Granada and Masaya, her energy and enthusiasm for her Mother’s native land is contagious. After seeing the touristy hot spots like Lake Cocibolca and the hot lava rushing from Volcan Masaya, she took us off the beaten path to more novel places, like the Chocolate museum ( where we had a class on how to make our own chocolate) and Doña Elba Cigar museum in Granada (where we rolled our own cigars), as well as the Ortiz -Gurdian museum in Leon, which holds the best art collection in all of Central America. The last night of the program to celebrate we enjoyed dancing at local Managua night club, El Shaman. Since Doña Marlene is a native Nicarguan, she is also very knowledgeable about her country’s geography and history, she is excellent about giving helpful travel tips. I treasured my time and experience in Nicaragua, exploring my Latin American roots and staying at Marlene’s Bed and Breakfast made it a warm and unforgettable experience. I highly recommend staying at Marlene’s Bed and Breakfast, I can’t wait to go back and discover more of Nicaragua. Thank you Marlene and Sabrina !
