The Space

"Staying with Jessica at the historic mansion was quite a remarkable experience. It was not only one of the nicest homes I have ever stayed at on Airbnb, but Jessica made one of the best breakfasts that I have ever had . . . better than any breakfast spot we found, so if you stay here, I recommend sticking around for breakfast. The photos do not do the first floor justice. It is massive, but also very charming. We stayed in the top floor, and the room was beautifully designed and arranged for us. After staying with Jessica, I would recommend it as one of the best Airbnb's in New York, and a must visit if you want to experience the authenticity of a Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood, the charm of an historic mansion, and the soul of Jessica's hospitality. In other words, this is a 6 star experience, even though we only allow 5 stars to be left." ~ Brian Chesky, Co-founder and CEO, Airbnb

"Jessica and Doug's home is incredible. A remarkable piece of Brooklyn history, lovingly and carefully revived by painstaking work and Jessica's eye for design and space. Every detail has a story, and the whole makes for what may be one of the more iconic listings on Airbnb. Jessica is a consummate hostess, kind and attentive to any needs I highly recommend a stay here if you come through NYC and can snag a room. I'll certainly be back many times." ~ Wrede Petersmeyer, General Manager NYC, Airbnb

"Wow, what a treat! Jessica was an unbelievable host, thank you!! Prompt to respond, easy check-in and out. Her place is absolutely unique and beautiful. Truly a treat to spend time there. Easy commute into the city makes this a plus. I would definitely recommend Jessica's place to anyone traveling to New York!!" ~ Joe Gebbia, Co-founder & Chief Product Officer, Airbnb

"Jessica and Doug's home is spectacular—a 5-story, circa 1887 brownstone built for the Pfizer pharmaceutical family, gorgeously restored and updated, and complete with an original, wrought-iron Otis elevator. She has mixed it up with beautiful art, lighting, and highly collectible midcentury designer furniture. The house is in the Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhood, a landmarked, beautiful area filled with historic buildings, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Ft. Greene Park, and close to good restaurants and subways. Most important, though, if you're thinking about staying here, is that J&D are warm, witty, delightful company. She's also an excellent cook. He's a serious jazz and wine aficianado. I recommend them 100%—it's an experience!" ~ Ted Allen, writer, cookbook author, and television personality

"A gorgeous restored Brooklyn brownstone with airy modernist updates: it was one of the most beautiful houses I've ever been in. … I've essentially been living in luxury hotels for a few years… [this] was one of the top experiences at a hotel that I've ever had.” ~ Sarah B.

"This was our first experience with Airbnb as an alternative to boutique hotels, and this place beats out on such hotels not only in terms of quality, service, and price performance but with the added personal touches as well." ~ Rana

WHAT IS THE LAW FOR SHORT TERM RENTING IN NYC?

Under New York law, short term rentals (less than 30 days) are not permitted when the owner/renter is away. Although legal when the owner/renter is present, many multi-unit building's leases and bylaws prohibit short term rentals.

Many guests are being asked not to mention Airbnb and to say that they are simply friends of the host. In buildings where such renting is prohibited the management can remove a guest. Ask if you are renting legally before booking.

Built in 1887, this magnificent landmarked 10,000 square foot historic brownstone is one of Brooklyn's architectural gems. Located in Clinton Hill, where early industrialists built their mansions along quiet tree-lined streets, this neighborhood is the borough's most culturally and architecturally interesting and is now home to many noted writers, artists and musicians. The house has been meticulously restored and decorated with beautiful vintage modern furnishings and museum-quality art; 19th century opulence meets 21st century Brooklyn cool. As a guest, you will enjoy relaxed yet attentive service in an atmosphere of quiet understated luxury; the bedding and other amenities are of the highest quality. Breakfast is prepared daily using seasonal local and organic ingredients. The location is perfect for exploring the rich cultural offerings of Brooklyn, which has been described as one of the hippest places on the planet. You will find, within walking distance, wonderful "Brooklyn food movement" restaurants, BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), Brooklyn Museum of Art, Botanical Garden, Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Flea, Fort Greene Park, the Pratt Sculpture Garden and the Green Market. • I booked one of the room for two out-of-town visitors of mine. They are really impressed: historical town house, well kept the interior details, artful, even whimsical decorations. Nice breakfast, convenient location .....of course, warm hostess and host , and two playful dogs.

  • Another great stay at "The Swoon", my wife and I had an amazing time at Jessica's place yet again (and we were once again enamored by the two pups).

I can't wait to stay there again! You'll have an amazing time if you choose to stay here!

  • We stayed at Jessica's wonderful Historic Mansion over a weekend and were amazed: The room with bath en suite was -like the rest of the house- lovely decorated and fitted with everything we needed. The lokation is great, next to some nice restarants, cafes and metro station in walking distance. But the best of all was meeting Jessica, who made us a lovely breakfast every morning, and who was so helpful with organizing theatre cards, booking an airport transfer or giving us advices, where to go for. And most of all, her friendly, open hearted way of hosting us, gave us immediately the feeling of being very wellcomed guests. I can highly recommend this place!

P..S. The two dogs in the family are the best!!

  • Our visit with Jessica and Doug was a 10 out 10! They were warm and welcoming and easy to talk to. The house is beautifully decorated (by Jessica) and full of museum quality art work and yet feels comfortable and very down to earth. Our room was spacious and full of wonderful small details and a bookshelf full of great children's books. We both felt well taken care of (one example....Jessica gave us and our friends a great tour of the house) and we will definitely stay there whenever we come to Brooklyn

  • The house, the hosts, the neighborhood, the experience; totally delightful! If you are one who loves having an experience when you travel, this is the place for you. My friend and I shared {The Swoon} and felt like we had scored the best secret in town. The house is beautiful (duh, the photos) and yet very unpretentious. Jessica and Doug are great folk who know the neighborhood well and will happily give you any advice about what to do, or leave you be, if you prefer. If you choose not to take advantage of their expertise and conversation, well then, maybe this isn't the place for you as this is a big part of why we loved the place so. Food: terrific. Bed: comfy Vibe: most def Brooklyn (NOT Manhattan) Location: good if you want to explore Brooklyn, and easy to get into Manhattan by subway or car service. Highly recommend. I'm coming back ASAP!

  • We had a wonderful 2 nights stay at 280 Washington Ave. The interior design of the place and room is exceptionnal and so is the welcoming of Jessica, family and friends. We had several interesting conversations with Jessica and her friends. She provided us lots of information and adresses since we are considering relocating our family in the area.
We definitly recommend the 280 washington av and are looking forward to staying again at Jessica and Doug's place.

I have to mention that we had planned an earlier stay at 280 washington av but our trip was cancelled because of Sandy storm. Jessica accepted immediatly to give us a full refund.

  • Second time at Jessica and Doug's, and it was like coming home. They are so wonderful, and the house is as gorgeous as ever. Jessica and Doug are the hippest people ever too -- it's like visiting really cool old friends who are fantastic cooks and have exquisite taste!! They go out of their way to make everything easy, comfortable and genuine -- just like the great Brooklyn neighborhood they live in.

About
We are thrilled to welcome people into our family house (and we love to make breakfast! ). It's just the kind of place that we would want to stay if we were visiting New York! We enjoy meeting interesting, creative and passionate people from around the world and sharing our love of Brooklyn and New York City with them -- the history, food, art, architecture, and music. What we offer is a room in a beautiful house. We are relaxed and welcoming. We ask that our guests make themselves at home (and we do all we can to make them as comfortable as possible). Staying with us is like staying with friends or family (who can cook well). We do not have locks on room doors (although we do fully respect our guest's privacy). This is not a hotel or a bed and breakfast "business" (no teddy bears or pot pourri). It is sometimes elegant and sometimes casual. We like vintage furniture, street art, local food, and all kinds of music ... an urban sensibility. It's 'real life' in this house -- we have dogs who are enthusiastic greeters, teenagers who are in and out and friends who stop by. That said, we try really hard to make each guest's stay wonderfully memorable. Please read our reviews. We have had amazing guests!
