About this listing
Stays longer than 30 days and after July are available. Small but cozy, a safe, quiet room with separate entrance and unshared bathroom in a vintage cottage. Tree-lined street in pleasant, safe neighborhood with many restaurants within walking distance. Downtown 1.5 mi.; park, cafes, bus lines, Cottage Hospital 2 blocks; beach 2 mi. Twin bed, desk. If you are ok with a small space, this is a great temporary home for international students, traveling nurses, and those moving to the area.
Small but cozy for one person, this private bedroom is located at the back of our vintage 1930s cottage. The twin bed is outfitted with all-cotton bedding and down comforter. There is a desk, closet, full length mirror, and additional storage space under the bed. This a small room--9'X7'--but it is quite inviting, like a being in a little seashell. Small, private bathroom with white cotton linens, hair dryer, sink, toilet, and a stall shower. Shower is smaller than standard and, we believe, was crafted by a handy homeowner in the 50s. It is somewhat funky, but clean! Flooring is vinyl with clean area rugs. The room is accessed from the outside through a separate, rear entrance. Guests walk through an office/laundry area to get to the room. This entire area is separated from the rest of the house by a door. The area outside your bedroom has a small microwave, a toaster oven, electric kettle, and a small refrigerator for your use. Weekly cleaning service included. Once-weekly kitchen use can be arranged ahead of time. There is also a washer and dryer, which our guests may use.
Guests will have access through the back door of the cottage, through an office/laundry room. This area is common to the guest and host family, although we don't "hang out" in this area. You are welcome to enjoy the front porch, with wicker chairs; the front yard, and umbrella-covered picnic table.
On the day of their arrival, I greet guests, give them keys and help them settle in. As the guest area is separate from the rest of the house and accessed through a separate door, you can choose when and how much interaction to have with us. We love chatting with our guests and learning about other places and sharing insider info about our hometown. .
Our cottage is located on a tree-lined street amid a charming mix of older cottages and small apartment buildings in the friendly, bustling, diverse Oak Park neighborhood, just two blocks from the oak-studded, grassy park itself. This is not a silent suburb, and there is a lot within walking distance: One of the best bakery-cafes in town is two blocks away, along with great Mexican, Italian, and Japanese food. Cottage Hospital is 3 blocks away. Downtown is 1.5 miles from here, an easy walk or bike ride through the posh, historic Upper East. The Old Mission is 1 mile away. Two of the best beaches in town--Hendry's and Ledbetter--are 5 minutes away by car. UCSB is approximately 8 minutes by car.
Bus lines stop within two blocks of us, providing transportation to all parts of town, including UCSB, State Street and the Waterfront. This area is easily accessed from the freeway, with onramps within 1 mile. Biking or walking from here is very easy, as the terrain is flat and there are bike arteries to downtown and the beaches from here.
We are a family with two young children. The kids are not particularly noisy, but they are kids and come with all the sights and sounds you would expect. This is a charming, older home, with some creaks and funkiness--for instance, our refrigerator is located in our office/laundry area. Also, the door opening to the guest room bathroom is smaller than standard width at 18". There is a cat on the property but she does not have access to the guest areas. Parking is on-street only; there are street sweeping limitations on Wednesday and Thursday from 1-4pm. There is always parking within our block.
Guests will have access through the back door of the cottage, through an office/laundry room. This area is common to the guest and host family, but you won't see much of us except around mealtimes, when we will be getting into the fridge located in this room. This area has a snack/drink table for use of the guest, with an electric kettle, and basic utensils, and serving ware. We will put out a tray of coffee for you in the morning. We leave a shelf in the refrigerator for our guests to use for leftovers or whatever. Kitchen use can be arranged for stays of four or more days; please contact me to discuss. You are welcome to enjoy the front porch, with wicker chairs; the front yard, and umbrella-covered picnic table.
Interaction with guests
On the day of their arrival, I greet guests, give them keys and help them settle in. We will keep the door shut to the main part of the house for your comfort, but will come through this area to access the refrigerator, laundry, and printer. We both work full time and are always running about with the kids but we love chatting with our guests and learning about other places and sharing insider info about our hometown.
Other things to note
We are a family with two young children. The kids are not particularly noisy, but they are kids and come with all the sights and sounds you would expect. This is a charming, older home, with some creaks and funkiness--for instance, our refrigerator is located in our office/laundry area. We will come into this part of the house to get to the fridge. We also do laundry in in this room between 9:30am and 7pm, but do our best to not have it running if we know a guest is home. Accessibility: Note that the door opening to the guest room bathroom is smaller than standard width at 18". The entrance to the cottage is on a short vertical slope which some have had difficulty navigating in the dark. Parking is on-street only; there are street sweeping limitations on Wednesday and Thursday from 1-4pm. There is almost always parking within our block. Lastly, if you are over 6' tall, you may not be comfortable in the bed nook, which is 72" long.

Hi, I'm Krista. I grew up in Santa Barbara, left for 10 years, but missed this beautiful place. I am blessed with a little boy, a baby girl, and a fantastic husband. I work with my dad on a local magazine called Santa Barbara Seasons. I love to read but rarely have the time! I love food, especially good cheese. I look forward to traveling again when the kids are a little older. I miss San Francisco, my other hometown. I never tire of the beauty that surrounds us here.
