Description

The space

Built in 2001, High Barton is the result of 2 years blood, sweat and a fair few tears along the way. Although it is faced with traditional Lakeland stone, this belies a deceptively modern interior featuring bold colour, Scandinavian design, art from around the world, plenty of books and great views. We have two guest bedrooms each with a double bed and I don't really ever accept more than two guests in one room. While I'd love to have families to stay the space is simply not practical.

Guest access

Aside from two beautifully appointed double rooms replete with shower rooms, WiFi and books, I invite you to share the piano room, billiard room and, of course, views across Ullswater.

Interaction with guests

This is my home first and foremost. You are most welcome but I do not run a traditional b and b. So don't expect tea-making facilities in your room, but do join me in the kitchen for a cuppa and homemade cake. Please bring your slippers and leave outside shoes for outside. I'm always delighted to chat and share fellow travelling stories, but since you're paying me for a service, please don't be surprised if I slip away to sort out the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, make the beds etc etc...

The neighborhood

The views and my nearest neighbours - the cows.

Getting around

YOU NEED A CAR!!! This is the Lake District - the best public transport is by foot or pedal power. Otherwise bring a car - we're half a mile from the nearest pub and three miles from the nearest village. A local bus does pass the driveway a couple of times a day but don't rely on it.

Other things to note

Directions:
CA11 0JH - sat nav will only get you to the area not the house
Leave M6 junction 40
First left on roundabout (Keswick /Ullswater)
Next roundabout - 2nd left Ullswater (a592)
Stay on this road all the wAy to the lake
At the lake turn right (glen ridding / Windermere)
Follow this road for about 2.5 miles lake on your left at all times
You will see a village sign for watermillock - keep going up hill, past the bracken rig pub (on your right) down long hill, past a phone box on your right, there will be house close to the road now.
As the road swings round to the right you will see waterside house on your left (says private no access) look to your right and a little further on you'll see a milk churn on the right hand side of the road. Slow down and look up the fell behind it - one big house obe smaller one behind with blue shutters - that's it. The road will straighten out signal right and slow down the driveway is hidden. Look for two stone gate posts with 'Ravenoaks' engraved on it / small slate plaque that says 'Lake House'. That is the driveway. Go all the way to the top - stay left at the fork and you'll end up in a gravel driveway with a navy blue Peugeot 108 parked - you've arrived!
If you miss the driveway and get to Leeming House Hotel you've gone too far- turn around! Good luck!

Had the most amazing stay here with Pauline. She was an incredibly welcoming host and took such good care of me. Her house is impeccably decorated, clean, spacious and set in beautiful surroundings. She gave so many wonderful recommendations and really made my time in the Lake District so special and memorable. If I ever make it back to the Lake District I would definitely stay with Pauline again. Don't hesitate - you'll have a wonderful time!

Pauline was a fantastic host, with a beautiful property boasting views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. It is not often you find properties like this, especially with a snooker table and beautiful piano available as well! Nothing was too much trouble, and Pauline had thought of many small details to make our stay even better; such as booking us in for dinner nearby (the restaurant was lovely with delicious food), preparing tea and coffee in the morning before we'd even got downstairs, and advising us on suitable activities to do on a very rainy weekend in the lakes! As mentioned in previous reviews the breakfast was outstanding, providing pretty much anything you could want, which really helped to set us up for a long day walking. Not only was Pauline an excellent host, but also a lovely and interesting person who we very much enjoyed chatting to each day. We would not hesitate to stay at Pauline's again (if she would have us!), and next time we are in Ullswater this will definitely be our first choice.

We had a lovely stay at Pauline’s place. The house and Pauline herself are very inspiring, with lots of colors and joy. The breakfast is amazing, just anything you could dream of and freshly made. Pauline also arranged a romantic diner for us in an excellent local restaurant. We hope to be back very soon and listen to the new stories of Pauline.

Pauline is an amazing host with an incredible sense of style. Her home was incredibly comfortable. Pauline is a talented and thoughtful cook. Her home is in a wonderful location in the North Lake District which has not been spoiled by too much tourism.

My boyfriend and I went to stay for the weekend at Pauline's house and we were simply blown away! The views, the room and the house are all totally stunning. Pauline spoiled us through her attention to detail - the lovely soap in the bathroom, delicious chocolates next to the bed, the breakfast banquet every morning. She suggested walks for us to try and booked us into a lovely restaurant. We felt so completely at home, and found it very hard to leave! Pauline herself is the loveliest host we've had. She is welcoming and kind and full of interesting stories. I can't recommend staying here enough- you will leave feeling rested and full of plans to go back and visit! Thank you Pauline for such a wonderful stay, we hope to see you soon!

Our host Pauline was incredibly hospitable and welcoming. She also gave us great recommendations of things to do and places to eat. Both rooms in the property have gorgeous views of the lake in stunning countryside. The breakfast was first class and kept us going till at least 4pm! Thanks

We stayed with Pauline for 2 nights (16-18/6). Honestly neither of us could think of anything she could improve on! Pauline was the perfect host, making us feel welcome even before we arrived by asking if we'd like her to make a dinner reservation for us at a new Bistro in Pooley Bridge on evening of our arrival, which we did, and, at our request, booking us a taxi. (Can thoroughly recommend 1863 Bar & Bistro.) Pauline also wrote asking if there was anything we didn't/couldn't eat for breakfast and describing the sumptuous breakfast she was planning which included fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli and fruit juice; local bacon, eggs and sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms, organic bread, local marmalade, jams, and fresh ground coffee or tea. We arrived to coffee and lemon drizzle cake with Pauline in her beautiful living room - triple aspected, with views of Ullswater in the distance across the fields; a large vivid room full of objets d'art and found objects, many flowers, books, fabrics, a baby grand piano, several comfy settees piled with cushions, small tables, and a long dining table on which we would eat our breakfast feast. The colour scheme is vivid - what on the outside looks like a traditional Lake District stone cottage is a modern, boldly coloured cornucopia within and in the cerise and turquoise courtyard hidden from external view. Pauline pulls off this style of design very well. We were in the aqua room - the large bed (at least king sized) has a very comfortable mattress and the walk-in shower is hot and powerful; we had a view of the lake in the distance too. There were wonderfully scented roses by the bed, and water and a bowl of chocolates on the table. We both slept well. Pauline is a warm and hospitable host, happy to talk, easily engaging and making a connection with us, making us feel at home, while also respecting our privacy and never intruding into our room. When we ate breakfast she served us, but didn't stay to talk, leaving us to enjoy it together - which was what we wanted. On the 2nd day of our stay another couple arrived and so we ate our 2nd breakfast together. That worked well too. It was the relaxing couple of days away together, just us, that I had been looking for when I booked this trip. Thank you Pauline for making that happen and for sharing your beautiful home with us. The whole trip was a delight.
