The Space

Enjoy comfortable accommodations in your own bedroom with private full bathroom. The bed is newly upgraded to a pillowtop Queen with luxurious high thread-count sheets. Also included in the room is a dresser, bedside lamp, alarm clock/radio with dual alarms, sitting chair, vanity mirror, ceiling fan, and Marpac white-noise machine. The bathroom, which was remodeled in 2011, is attached to the bedroom to ensure maximum privacy. In addition to fresh towels, the bathroom has a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, and shaving cream. There is a closet with room to hang clothing and a luggage rack for conveniently storing a suitcase or duffel bag. On the back of bathroom door is a full-length mirror. For those with mobility issues, please note the bedroom is on the 2nd floor.

Sustainability is a noticeable theme throughout my home. Your showers are provided via a solar water heater and more than 80% of my home's electricity is generated via 9 photovoltaic panels on the roof. The towels and linens are laundered with non-toxic, biodegradable detergent and usually line-dried. Household cleaners, soaps, and shampoos are non-toxic and cruelty-free. I have a recycle bin in the kitchen and compost food waste.

Self-serve breakfast is available. The offerings vary at any given time, but you're welcome to anything in the kitchen that is breakfasty. To help you wake up I have a drip coffee maker and espresso machine both with fresh ground coffee, and assorted tea bags. In the cabinet above the coffee maker you will find a box or two of cereal along with granola and cereal bars. On the other side you'll find bread, English muffins, and sometimes doughnuts or muffins. The refrigerator nearly always has soy or rice milk, OJ, and greek yogurt.

For those of you who are visiting to explore the wonderful Charleston area, I have a notebook in the guest room with lots of ideas about events and activities plus my personal recommendations for restaurants and bars. Of course I will also gladly provide you with personalized recommendations for restaurants/attractions and anything else that will help make your visit more enjoyable.

Interaction with Guests

I am usually home when guests arrive but have it setup so people can arrive without me here. My interaction with guests varies, though I always respect my guests' privacy. I like to offer you a beverage and hear your stories at least one evening during your visit.

I should note that although I love kids, due to my rotating shift schedule it can be difficult for me to host those with very young children whose noise levels are less predictable.

The Neighborhood

My townhouse is located on the western side of Mount Pleasant about two miles east of the Ravenel Bridge, making it very convenient to Shem Creek, downtown Charleston, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, and elsewhere. You can usually be at your destination downtown or on Sullivan's Island in less than 15 minutes. This part of Mount Pleasant has everything you need, including numerous grocery stores (Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Publix, Bi-Lo, Harris Teeter), a library, post office, banks, plentiful restaurants and bars, stellar parks, and outdoor recreation such as tennis, kayaking, bicycle rentals, and boat tours. My house is in a very quiet, safe neighborhood, and is smoke- and pet-free. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance but beyond that you'd need a car to get around comfortably.

For the runners and bikers among you, there are a lot of good options from my house. The neighborhood streets are less-traveled and can get you to US-17 and Coleman Blvd, both of which have well-lit sidewalks and bike lanes. On Coleman Blvd you can get to the Ravenel Bridge ped path and all the way to Sullivan's Island.

Getting around

My house is 5.3 miles from Sullivan's Island, 10.3 miles to Isle of Palms, and 6.0 miles to downtown Charleston.

Bus Service:
Mt Pleasant is served by route 40 and route 401. Route 40 is the only way to get from Mt Pleasant into downtown Charleston and it comes by approximately every 40 minutes. Route 401 only travels within Mt Pleasant. The nearest stop for bus 40 is near the intersection of South Shelmore Blvd and the Frontage Rd, directly across from the CVS. If you look at a map website, do a search on the following lat/lon to see the bus stop location. Thirty-two point eight zero nine four six North. Seventy-nine point eight seven seven eight West. It is about a 15 minute walk from my house. The bus takes about 25-30 minutes to reach the Visitor's Center in downtown Charleston. There you can transfer to other buses serving the Charleston peninsula if you choose. The fare is $1.75 each way (bills and coins accepted; exact change needed). You can also purchase one or three day unlimited passes on board. Bus 401 picks up next to Harris Teeter on Houston Northcutt Blvd.
There is no regular bus service to any of the beaches so a taxi or personal vehicle are required.

Taxi Service:
Approximately $15 each way between my house and downtown Charleston.

To take full advantage of what the Charleston area has to offer you really need a car. Although car rental places are everywhere, prices are generally better if you rent one at the Charleston Airport. Thrifty, Enterprise, and Advantage are usually the cheapest options. The weekends are much cheaper for car rentals. You can often get a small car Friday through Monday for less than $75.

    Johns place was in an idyllic and quiet neighborhood- perfect for a good rest.

    We were not a far drive from Charleston town- which was just beautiful. We also drove down to nearby Sullivan's Island- which was beautiful and really laid back.

    Great to know we were using solar energy while at Jphns. Made us feel like much more responsible travelers :)

  • Jonathan's set up is perfect for receiving airbnb guests. He was friendly, welcoming and full of suggestions for food/activities/sites/etc in and around Charleston. The room and home are exactly as described and the keypad entry and parking situation were super convenient. We spent our days in Charleston, a 12 minute or so drive from the house and couldn't have been happier with our experience.

I'm originally from Apex, NC but have lived in Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC, prior to moving to Charleston in 2005. I am a meteorologist with the National Weather Service by profession, but also stay quite active in the local community through volunteering and non-profit organizations. Environmental sustainability has always been my passion as you'll see in my home. In addition to all of the day-to-day actions, my larger accomplishments were having a solar water heater installed in 2010 and 9 photovoltaic panels installed in 2013. I'm now generating about 80% of my annual energy needs via the sun. The Charleston area is a fantastic place to live and visit, yet I feel the lodging options are entirely too expensive. Thus, I love being able to offer a comfortable alternative to the hotels at a fraction of the cost while also getting to meet lots of amazing people in the process.
