Stable Cottage sits in a beautiful location within the mature Fort Royal estate. 2 cosy bedrooms on a gallery landing, open plan living & dining room, opening into a peaceful kitchen garden, this is the perfect country retreat to get away from it all

The space

Fort Royal lies in an idyllic location on the shores of Lough Swilly in North Donegal, in the picturesque harbour village of Rathmullan.

Stable Cottage sits in a beautiful location within the mature grounds of Fort Royal Country House, formerly one of the county's most well-known hotels. Converted from the original stone stable block into a cosy 2 bedroom cottage, it offers an open plan living and dining area with cable TV and DVD player, and fully equipped kitchen. The gallery landing above leads to a double and a twin bedroom, and bathroom with bath/shower. French windows in the living area open into a sheltered, peaceful kitchen garden.

The real magic though lies in the beautiful grounds outside- you will step out of the door into 8 acres of wonderfully mature parkland and gardens, with direct, private access onto one of the best beaches in County Donegal, with 2 km of unbroken sand sloping gently down into Lough Swilly. Your private tennis court (shared between the four residences on site) has among the best views of any court in Ireland!

The shops, restaurants, pubs and amenities of the village are a few minutes' stroll along the beach or road, and the local area is an ideal holiday destination for walkers, cyclists, golfers and watersport fans alike- everything you need is on your doorstep. Alternatively, there can be no better place than Rathmullan to simply change down a few gears, kick back and relax...

Great place will come back. One small issue is that the shower is always cold that would need to be fixed. Other than that gorgeous place to stay.

We were in Rathmullan for a wedding at Rathmullan House and Alison's cottage was walkable from the venue. It's set in a gorgeous location just a stone's throw from the beach and in lovely grounds with a garden out the back. Inside is basic but cosy with a working fireplace. There was a problem with the shower when we were there but they were able to give us access to another of the cottages on site.

Great cute place for a few days away. Open fire (much needed in Jan) and short walk down to a pristine beach with amazing views. Rathmullan town has a good few pubs, small shops and nice bay/harbour. It's a good location for exploring up and down the Atlantic way. Recommended!

Damien met us on arrival and was very friendly and welcoming. He had already put the heat on in the accommodation prior to our arrival and had prepared logs for the fire. The cottage itself was exactly as described, authentic and charming. The location is hard to beat, beautiful gardens and a short walk to the beach, would be magical for young kids! Would definitely come back here in the summer to make the most of the stunning surroundings.

Great place to get away from it all with the most amazing grounds and private walkway down to the coast. From here we walked into the village or down to Rathmullan house where you can try some of the local beers or eat a great pizza baked in a wood fired oven. The host were lovely and we had no trouble finding the place. Everything we needed was on hand.

Our stay at the Stable Cottage in Rathmullan was absolutely delightful. The two story cottage is full of little details from a mahogany staircase, decorative iron handrails surrounding the upstair's gallery to the small wood burning fireplace and lovely garden accessed through french doors. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. We took an evening stroll around the property and walked the path that led to a beautiful beach. We were advised by the caretaker to eat at Belle's Kitchen in Rathmullan. The food and wide selection is superb. Two dinners and one breakfast at Belle's Kitchen was the undoubtedly the best food we had in Ireland. We highly recommend staying at any of the three stable cottages on the estate. We look forward to returning to this little gem. Stuart and Leslie

For our wedding in Rathmullan House we arranged for a number of guests to stay in Ali's cottages (including this, the Stable Cottage). Ali was extremely kind and helpful with organising this, and the accommodation was perfect for what we needed. Highly recommended if you are in a similar situation!
