UPDATE: If you can't find the dates you want, message me and I'll initiate the reservation if we have space.
We are a small and sincere home of international travelers who believe hostels are much more than a cheap place to stay. For us, it's about meeting fascinating people from all over the world, making lasting friendships, and creating community. We are very social here and will want to know something about yourself when you contact us by way of your Airbnb profile.
As fellow international travelers, this place is more than a hostel to us; it is our home. We strive to learn about the interesting people who choose to visit the great city of San Francisco. You can expect us to ask you the usual heap of questions: "Where did you come from? What do you do? How long you staying? Where you off to next?". We hope you don't mind indulging us with a bit of social chatter before we show you to your bunk. However, if you just arrived from some far off location and can hardly keep an eye open- we will work as quickly as possible to tuck you into your bed.
Our house is specifically designed to so that interaction with other guests is impossible to avoid; the shared dormitories encourage community and being social with your new friends. If you crave privacy or tend to be anti-social, you may find our "openness" a bit odd or not to your liking. We would love to suit everyone's tastes if we could, but we do understand if this concept is not the right choice for you.
We are also in a great location, nestled comfortably between the Financial District and Chinatown, a stone's throw from the iconic Transamerican Tower, and stumbling-home distance from North Beach's vibrant bars. We are on a major bus line and roughly 5 blocks from the Muni/Bart station. Although we are a small hostel, we do a good job providing the amenities and services of the larger hostels, except with a personal touch. You would never confuse our wee hostel with a "flashpackers" and we're not even close to resembling an institutional (aka impersonal) hostel.
Yes, our kitchen will only accommodate a few people at one time, but rest assured that it's modern, fully stocked and some amazingly yummy food comes out of there. We routinely invite our guests to join us for community dinners. Our bathrooms are clean and modern, even if the plumbing on the inside is over 100 years old! Our beds are the sturdiest bunks in the world- custom made for backpackers with powder coated steel. These beds will not squeak or shake and there are large backpack/suitcase sized storage lockers underneath (99cm wide by 45cm tall by 60cm deep). You can use your own lock or buy one from us. And, of course, we have free wi-fi and high speed internet available.
San Francisco is chock full of things to do, of course. And, since we do a bit of traveling ourselves, we know budget is key. We definitely will not push a bunch of expensive tours and tickets on you. We are happy to point you in the direction you seek- armed with a map.
We are in the business of getting to know people. If you think this unique hostel is right up your alley, we invite you to come spend some time with us. Happy travels, and welcome.

The bunks were clean, comfortable and well organized with good locker spaces. There were ample bathrooms and showers, clear and simple lights-out and quiet rules. Guests during my stay were very cooperative and respectful, and I felt I was among friends from the booking dialogue to the goodbye hugs and wishes for safe travels as I left.
Note: The door is tricky to find, if you first arrive when it's dark out, since the surrounding businesses are closed for the day - but the space itself is super secure and cozy, once you are buzzed in.
It is a short walking distance to the Ferry Building on the water, shopping areas, and major BART/bus/trolley lines where you can be whisked off to visit other SF neighborhoods.
Definitely stay here if you want to meet wonderful people from around the world, and explore the city on a budget.
Exactly as advertised. Very small very very community oriented hostel in the heart of San Francisco. Highly recommended for people who like people and are headed to the Bay Area-- spontaneous feeling of family with a whole bunch of folks you've never met before the minute you enter the doors. Definitely cooperative style short term living space - not for someone who wants quiet, personal space, non unisex private bathroom space. 100% fit for cooperative community oriented folks instead. Personally loved it and would certainly visit again.
This was my first stay at a hostel, and if any others are like this, I've been missing out. Met some wonderful people and had a great nights stay here. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff, along with a unique and fun atmosphere. Two thumbs up!
This was a great place to stay while in San Francisco. I was in town attending a conference at the Moscone convention center. My daily walk to and from Moscone was pleasant, quick and safe. Also, you can't beat the price.
The staff at the hostel is incredibly friendly and helpful. They are always up for some sharing time in the common areas and willing to help you with all you need.
The location is perfect in the middle of the city centre.
I really enjoyed my stay in here.
Wonderful place to stay right in the middle of everything. Very friendly and helpful staff and the place really "forces" you into communcating with other guests! I got lucky and was given a bed in one of the rooms with real doors, but the whole hostel is really made from a travellers point of view. You´ve got perfect internet access, enough places to recharge your phone and laptop, great organization for the kitchen and staff will help you carrying your suitcase up to the forth floor. I really recommend this place!!!!!!
San Francisco just wouldn't be the same without my experience at the Friendly Hostel. I hope they will continue to have me back year after year.
Friendly staff, great location, good price. You get what you expect and what you want out of this experience!
I went to a bunch of hostels in the area, but this hostel had the friendliest staff and community and made me feel right at home! Everything was super clean and organized. The staff was understanding and flexible, and the fellow travelers were just super cool people from all around the world! I definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the area and would choose this hostel over any other short term accommodation options!
I was on a business trip and had to find a place to stay for 2 nights between two locations.
1. Location: Located in china town, with a short walk to Market street which have several bus routes and the BART (subway), very convenient for short travels if you prefer walking without renting a car.
2. Environment: 1, 2 floor are restaurant areas. 3 floor is an open space with partial isolation, about 6 bed racks in one space, bed was cozy and each person had a locker, the locker was very useful and large. 4 floor has a common room for socializing with other travelers, and other bed racks in isolated rooms. Though everyone could be friendly, but if you're seeking a quiet place after 10:00, you should be aware that most of the time customers would come back late till midnight, and usually that means sounds and squeaks unintentionally, but after a while it was peaceful. The common room was nice and you could spend all time just sitting there or chatting.
3. Host: Ryan was nice and the others were too, (sorry Im not good with memorizing names). You could ask them anything and will show hospitality.
Overall it was a nice experience, I recommend it to long term travelers 7-14 days or of course more. I couldn't have time to totally blend into it with satisfaction do to work, but if I go traveling to SF again I would chose there again just to make more friends.
Taken 1 star out because of the disturbance of sounds at midnight. Or else 5 stars should be true. But thats what a vivid hostal should be like.
