About this listing
Small private studio apartment in the backyard of an east side bungalow. Walking/biking distance to downtown and tons of east side bars and restaurants. Easy access to Town Lake trails.
We have a very cute, small studio space with kitchenette and full bathroom in the back of our home. Futon and desk fold away for more room.
Borrow our bike and peddle down to Town Lake, 1/2 mile away or downtown (1 mile) or walk to many of the east side bars. If you haven't experienced the East Side of Austin, you're in for a treat! Hip "Weather Up" bar just two blocks away. Bars and restaurants of the Rainey Street district an easy 1 mile walk. Convention center is a 1 mile walk. East 5th & 6th bars and restaurants are within a 1 - 2 mile walk. We walk downtown all the time!
2 blocks to the bus stop, 5 blocks to the train stop that takes you right to the Convention Center.
Charming quiet and safe Holly street neighborhood. Separate alley entrance. No smoking and no pets. WiFi available.
Elizabeth was very responsive in her communication with us. Great host! The living space might be better suited to a single traveller, as the space and bathroom are very small. The shower pressure is also quite low and hard to shower with.
The birdhouse is in a great location. I was easily able to walk downtown in about twenty minutes, and if walking isn't your thing it's a quick bus or Uber ride to the heart of the city. Elizabeth was super accommodating, and helped me out with any issues quickly. If you're just looking for a short stay or somewhere to keep your stuff close to the city without breaking the bank, I recommend staying here.
The Birdhouse is a great little haven for the self-sufficient traveler to Austin. In a funky little corner of the city -- yuppies, hipsters and young families coexist here -- away from town, but still readily accessible, with lots of drinking holes to choose from within walking distance -- I found the Weather Up tavern particularly welcoming (ask for Fidel, a bartender par excellence, who will look after you). Elizabeth is great -- she will give you all the space and privacy you want -- entry to the Birdhouse is through the alley, and you can come and go as you please. But I was also welcomed into her backyard to hang out with her and her film friends who were affable and easygoing, and I enjoyed beers and good conversation with them. Austin people are friendly, to be sure. I would go back in a heartbeat and visit Austin again and stay at the Birdhouse -- comfy, cozy lodgings and good value for the price -- probably at a time other than the peak of summer. The air conditioning in the Birdhouse saved my neck. The week I was there, the temperature never dropped below 85F.
Couldn't recommend this place more. Completely no frills, but thoughtfully put together, has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Elizabeth was a great host and was super easy to coordinate with. Because of the private access I never met her but appreciated the privacy that it afforded.
The checkin was easy, and located in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. The accomodations, while a bit Spartan, were a very good value for the money. Not exactly my cup of tea these days, but a perfect crash pad for a couple students pinching pennies at SXSW or any other Austin event.
The birdhouse was as described in the listing. The coordination with Elizabeth was quick and easy. Was great for a short one night stay.
Awesome experience! The comfort of a hotel with the character of camping. "The Birdhouse" was adorable, the neighborhood was great, and our host was very responsive to every issue that came up.
