Maison Marais 2: Large Local Living

House - Entire home/apt · Marais St, New Orleans, LA 70117, United States

The Space

Spacious and a bargain compared to one bedroom units of same price. Now with wifi! Bright cheerful full kitchen but photos have not been updated.

Maison Marais 2 is a large, 2-bedroom home, 1/2 of a double shotgun house in a vibrant local community. It's has a mix of modern and antique furniture and is walking distance to Frenchmen Street (10-15 min) and the French Quarter (another 5-10 min). A good fit for two individuals or two couples. The sofa converts to an extra large twin bed for an additional person for a total of 5 people maximum.

Easy parking right in front of the house and public transportation just 1/2 block away. Walking distance to many coffee shops, local restaurants, music venues and bars. Just 4-5 blocks from Mimi's in the Marigny (voted best bar in New Orleans}. Same block as great neighborhood bar and art gallery, in the St. Claude Arts District (art openings every 2nd Sat of each month), just across St. Claude from the new Healing Arts Center and the Marigny Theatre. This area is home to many musicians, artists and film industry folks. Bike rentals are nearby.

House features furnished living room (with George Nelson sofa and Steelcase chairs), 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 queen), bathroom, and full kitchen (Eames dining chairs). Clean. Nice linens, towels and toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion) provided. Free wifi. Note that there is an addition in the back of this rental, adjacent to the kitchen, which is not part of the rental. The owner has access to this addition through a separate door, and a locked door separates the rental from this space.

I've posted a guidebook under Maison Marais 1 to some favorite local spots. Please check it out.

This house is in the New Marigny neighborhood and the St. Claude Arts District (art walk 2nd Saturday of each month), adjacent to Treme and Faubourg Marigny. It is perfectly located for exploring the quaint neighborhoods of Marigny and Bywater with their restaurants, bars and coffee shops; the music clubs and restaurants of Frenchmen Street; and all of the bling and glamour of the French Quarter by foot. There is a bus line one block away that connects you to Canal Street, the convention center, Magazine Street, City Park, and St. Charles Avenue. If you are driving, it is easy to park right in front of the house.

Note: The street view from the website is out of date and does not show the recently opened New Orleans Healing Center (with grocery, yoga studio, voodoo shop, police office, restaurant, coffee bar and juice bar, nightclub, and health club.) It is now a major focus of this neighborhood. The historic St. Roch Seafood Market, 1/2 block away, is now under renovation.

I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the city and it's events with guests and try to provide each guest with information to help make their stay unique, comfortable, and memorable.

When booking, please provide arrival and departure times as well as the names of all guests.

Note: The bar down the street on the corner has a regular blues jam beginning each Thursday at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday nights, there's music which goes later into the night. A few guests have noted that they are able to hear the music on Saturdays. My neighbor has a rooster who crows during the day. Some people find this charming; others trying to sleep in may be disturbed.

Whether it's eating, listening to music, thrift store shopping, hanging out in coffee shops, doing yoga or going to a small theatrical production, you can find these things within blocks of Maison Marais. There's plenty of day and night life here. Many guests visit the French Quarter on their first day in New Orleans but choose to stay close to home during the rest of their stay.

If my calendar shows only 2 days available, please feel free to request a 2-night stay (instead of the 3-night minimum). If I can accommodate you, I will. If you'd like to book 1-2 nights only, and there are more available nights, there is a $30 cleaning fee if accepted.

If you're the type of person who enjoys stepping out the the typical tourist traps and wants a home away from home where you can live more like a local, this is for you. Have the comforts of a large home to spread out in and to come back to when you need a rest. Besides the two bedrooms, there's a separate living room and large kitchen, providing more space than most other accommodations. So close to many things, one doesn't have to go far to feel right at home in New Orleans.

If arriving by air, I know a local cab driver who can pick you up at your gate, avoiding the cab queues, and drive you directly to the house without any additional costs over the standard rate to and from the airport. If interested, be sure to ask for her contact information. Please note that there's a public bus from the airport to Canal Street, From there, transfer to bus 88, and you're there, 1/2 block from the house.

Maison Marais 1 and Maison Marais 2 are two sides of a single house. So, if one side does not offer you the number of beds or rooms you need, please check out the other side. Both listings have calendars that you can view online.

  • Georgia has a lovely home she is sharing with the world! She was a gracious host, and if my husband and I go back to NOLA, her place will be the first place I check for availability. You will not be disappointed, trust me. xoxo

  • We had a great 4 nights in New Orleans thanks to Georgia's amazing hospitality. We arrived after a long day of travelling to have Georgia there waiting for us, that alone is so helpful!
Her place is very nice and clean, full kitchen, comfortable bed in a nice quiet area of town. She personally gave us a sense of where we were in the city pointing out local restaurants, bars, grocery and liquor stores in walking distance.
She also gave us binders of good places to eat and maps of what's what in the French Quarter which is about a 20 min jaunt. Very convenient. She also has a friend Carol a taxi driver, who will pick you up and drop you off any where you need to go. A ride with Carol alone is worth the price of admission to New Orleans!
Next time we visit NO we will look up this place to stay again!

  • We had a wonderful time in New Orleans! We stayed at Georgia's home for a full week and she had everything we needed. We loved the decor and art throughout the unit. We were comfy and felt safe in the neighborhood. Georgia was very helpful and available throughout our entire stay. We walked to the French Quarter from the home and had no problems. Overall, the neighborhood felt safe and clean. There were a couple of issues that were quickly resolved upon arrival. Parking in front of the house was generally not a problem. While I would come back to New Orleans, I would probably stay in a different area next time. We absolutely loved the Garden District! For future travelers - definitely try the tacos at St.Roch's Tavern on the corner (cash only) and don't miss the Cake Cafe nearby for a great meal and yummy cupcakes! We loved the parades and festivities during St.Patrick's Day!

  • Georgia's house is beautiful and well taken care of. Georgia was a great host and gave good recommendations. The house was well decorated and we felt at home. Location wise it is just a short 10-15 minute walk to the French Quarter or a super quick cab ride. There's also a great cafe called Who Dat Cafe a few blocks with a fantastic breakfast. Will definitely be back, thanks Georgia!

  • Georgia is a gracious host. Her knowledge of the area and suggestions for food, drink and entertainment were sound and excellent! Maison Marais is quaint with much character. If you're thinking about getting a hotel, I suggest staying here instead. It's reasonably priced, a 15 minute walk to the French Quarter and much to see along the way to keep you entertained.

  • We went at Georgia's for a very short stay, but she nevertheless welcomed us very nicely, detailing the surroundings to us, the places to eat, drink or see a nice set.
The house is terrific, very clean, bright and with anything you'd need. The location was ideal for us, close to Frenchmen Street, and with lots of good stuff close by foot.

I highly recommend this house; if I hopefully ever go to NOLA again, I'll make sure to stay there.

  • WOW!!! What a place and what a host!! We couldn't have wished for a better location and a nicer and more generous and helpful host. The house was great and suited all our needs and more. Georgia was just a pure delight, quick and great at communicating with us and soooo helpful in letting us know the amazing things to do in New Orleans (where to go and what to see). The neighbourhood is lovely and we enjoyed it's many culinary and musical delights. It's a short walk to Frenchman street where there will be music to your ears. It's near the wonderful MiMi's bar (awesome tapa's and drinks), St.Roch Tavern (yummy mexican food and great little bar/pub)and Siberia (awesome Russian food). So close to the coolest grocery store, Mardi Gra Zone. Great coffee is not far away with Spitfire in the French quarter and Booties not far at all, especially if you have a bike. We loved our stay and will definitely stay here when we come again. It's a home away from home.

  • We had a great stay at Georgia's beautiful home. She was so helpful in suggesting places to eat nearby and gigs going on, and even gave us tips for our journey north to Clarksdale and Memphis!

The house is very well-maintained and there are lovely personal touches of charm and comfort. Very good beds and luxurious linen. The house was warm and Georgia provided extra heaters and blankets in case, which was just as well as we came during the 'snowpocalypse'. Nice to have toiletries, breakfast cereals, oatmeal, tea/coffee, and OJ stocked too.

The house isn't exactly where Airbnb maps it, it's on Marais St a little further north, but is easy access to Frenchman St in Marigny and the French Quarter. A cab to Frenchman was about $7, to FQ about $10.

We can't recommend this place enough - it's great to have your own home in NOLA to come back to, cook up some meals and - as Georgia puts it - live like a real local.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Georgia's place. We parked our car and were able to walk and use public transit the whole trip. The neighborhood nearby was pretty good with bars and a few great places to eat very close by.
Georgia was a lovely hostess and provided everything we needed and more.
